Hi Mandy,
I think that in order to live in Malta for longer that 3 months you need to
apply for a residency visa, however i think this is just a formality and is just
a matter of going to an office in Valetta and applying. However If you are not
working after the first three months i think you have to prove that you are able
to financially support yourselves and report to the police headquarters in
Floriana before you get your residency permit. If you apply for and accept a job
your emloyer will advise you and assist with getting a work permit, i dont think
you can obtain a permit unless you have a job offer. If you have a work permit
you automatically get a residency permit. Also if only one of you has a job then
the other will still get the residency permit also.
Hope that makes sense its a bit confusing i know. In short we spent a lot of
hours traipsing between offices in Valetta and Floriana having bits of paper
stamped and i admit it was a bit of a nightmare.
As for speaking Maltese then no we havent learned it as yet, it hasnt been a
problem so far but i'm sure it would be beneficial to speak a little bit.
My husband works in Gzira and to be honest its not one of the nicest areas, i
haven't heard very positive things about it and there are a lot of prostitutes
hanging about there.
Sliema would be a better option i think.

Hi Lisa
Many thanks for your email.
What we have decided to do is to go out to Malta again soon and have a good look
around. We would like to live somewhere near Sliema and valletta (perhaps
Gzira).
Have you learnt to speak Maltese?
I have had a look at schools on the internet and there seems to be quite a few
around where we would like to live.
Just a couple of questions. Do you need a visa to live in Malta full time and
also do you need a permit to work out there?
Thank you very much for your help and once we have been out to Malta again, if I
think of anything else perhaps I could ask you.
Many thanks
Mandy

Hi Mandy,
I'm Lisa and i also have a son who is two and there are a wide range of schools
to choose from, the standards of education are very good here, state schools are
also of a high standard if you want your son to fully intergrate and speak
maltese, there are also internation schools specifically for children from
abroad and many private and church run schools, i am still deciding and looking
around for my son, but choice is certainly not a problem. The only thing that i
am concerned about is that they put an awful lot of pressure on kids in school
and thay have exams and lots of homework from a young age, i'm still not sure if
this is a good thing or a bad thing.
As for jobs i had been told that it was difficult to find work here especially
if you are not Maltese, but myself and my husband found work relatively easily,
me as a nurse and he for a gambling software company. Have a look at the
goverment job vacancies website at www.etc.gov.mt they have all the recent
vacancies online, and you can also submit your C.V so that potential employers
can view it. The local newspapers also have a list of job vacancies. Bear in
mind that the wages are a lot lower here, day to day living here is relatively
cheap and utility bills are low but eating out, clothes, cars are about the same
as U.K and in some cases more expensive. As for your husband retiring here i
think that its pretty straightforward to claim your pension here. If theres
anything else you need to ask let me know,

Hi, my name is Mandy. I am married with a 2 year old son. We are
seriously considering moving to Malta in the next couple of years. My
husband is a bit older than me and would then be of retiring age.
Has anybody got any advice on how easy it is to do this, the type of
schools available for my son. He will be starting school next year. We
have been to Malta on holiday and love it there, the climate, the
people and the general pace of life. Having become rather dis-
illusioned with the UK we would love to have a change.
I would need a job, I am in clerical/admin work at the moment. I also
have 20 years experience in the UK legal field.
My husband would like a part time job (perhaps in his field of
Chartered Surveyor).
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks
