'The Country Wife', being the most infamous of the Restoration comedies, will be
presented in full romp by the Jadis Shadows team who will be bringing fresh
savour to the farce and sexual connotations of the play; while placing a focus
on the many similarities between 17th Century London and modern Britain today.
Written by William Wycherley (at the height of Britain's Restoration Period) the
play takes an audience into a century where pleasure was supreme and appearances
were everything.
London playboy Horner has a plan, a cunning plan, to enable him to continue any
affair he wishes without the unpleasant business of a husband's suspicions or
jealousy. A plan which proves a great success; but will he finally be able to
reach for that last forbidden fruit?
How will his lovers respond once they discover the extent of his liaisons?
Will he and his rakish friends be able to control a situation rapidly spiralling
out of control… and will he finally discover within himself any truer,
faithful emotions?
Packed full of elaborate characterisation and high farce this is a fast paced
piece designed to delight and entertain.
Sexual freedom, hypocrisy, addiction to fashion and consumerism are all themes
Jadis Shadows intend to highlight throughout this flamboyant period piece.
The production will be costumed in full, specifically designed, splendour.
To date Jadis Shadows Productions has carried highly successful and critically
appreciated tours of many evocative and much loved pieces including; The
Revengers Tragedy, I Am A Camera, Mary Stuart and Macbeth.
Artistic Director, James Tudor, states, " The Country Wife is the largest and
most ambitious production we have undertaken to date and we are thrilled to be
travelling the piece to an even wider selection of venues. It is looking to a be
a truly saucy romp with a strong period feel; a historical classic which is
fully accessible to audiences today."
