Contents [ Please read on http://www.burmadigest.org.uk ]

English Language Section

I. "Burma's NO To Child Soldiers Day "_ Editorial: Tai Samyone

_ March 27th is usually celebrated as Burma's Resistance Day, but SPDC changed the name to Armed Forces Day – a move to celebrate themselves narcissistically.........Despite the extent and ferocity of wars in Africa where child soldiers have been commonplace, Burma remains the country with the highest level of child soldiers in the world.........

II. " Speaking with Roland Watson about Burma's Nuclear Programs"_ Interview: Dr. Tayza

_ Burma's uranium deposits could become yet another large cash stream for the junta....Other elements present in Burma are substantially more radioactive, and suitable for dirty bombs as well.....SPDC is trying to obtain, or already has, ballistic missiles. These are not of a range that can threaten distant continents, but they could reach Burma's neighbors.....when you have imperfect information, and are evaluating something as serious as nuclear weapons, it is best to assume the worst. This way, if the worst ever happens, you are not caught completely off guard.

III. " To Commemorate 27 March as Burma Childsoldiers' day "_ Candid Commentary: Dr. San Oo Aung

_  Myanmar is unique in the region, as the only country where government armed forces forcibly recruit and use children between the ages of 12 and 18. While most child soldiers are in their teens, some are as young as seven years old. Children have been used as spies, as spotters, observers, message-carriers, and even as human shields, servants or to lay or clear landmines.............

IV. "Global Protest on the Arrest & Gang-rape of School Girls by Burmese Army " _ Campaign Action : Kachin National Union

_ school girls aged 14 to 16 were brutally raped at the military base by three officers and four soldiers. The families later approached Lt. Col Soe Win to find resolution to the issue but only hush money was offered merely to silence the story.  When the news reached the media, the four high school girls were arrested and taken to an undisclosed location.  Nearly two months have passed and no one knows the condition of the school girls.. .........

V.  "A rewarding soldier"_ Anti-sanction Debate: Victor S. Khambil

_ Young children who can not even load M16 rifle at their shoulders are now conscripted into Myanmar military. If the founding fathers of Burmese Army resurrect today and see what the current military regime is doing, they will instead quickly go back underneath the earth thinking they have mistakenly resurrected in a wrong country which is infested by wild beasts. .. .............

VI. "Let's Mark Burma's Child Soldiers Day"_ Campaign News

_ To be able to increase international awareness of the sufferings of our Child Soldiers in Burma, we need to have a Child Soldiers' Day. And as the SPDC army is the biggest user of Child Soldiers, lets mark SPDC's Armed Forces Day March 27 as Burma 's Child Soldiers Day, to highlight their plight and to highlight the need to help them urgently!

V II. " The conflicts in the Union of Burma"_ Ethnic Perspective: Sao Yawd Serk

_ in 1952, the Burmese Army and Kuomintang cooperated in drug trafficking and setting up the heroin laboratories. Since then, heroin laboratories started to exist inside Shan State. The Burmese Army carried the heroin from KMT............

VIII. " BACK TO THE STONE AGE" _ Poem: Feraya

_ The ethnic women in Burma live in fear night and day.....Of being picked on, victimised and sexually abused.....If they complain, they are thrown in jail.....And they are treated as worthless....They are preyed on by the Burmese soldiers ..........

IX. "Complaining unfair attitude On Religious Minorities" _ Commentary: Ko Tin Nwe

_ Many thousands of students like that girl were getting such unfair treatment every year. Religious Minorities Children in Myanmar have no future just because of that notorious apartheid Citizenship Law. The successive Myanmar Generals have been trying to oppress Religious Minorities since Ne Win's era...............

X. "India Chooses Burmese Gas over Burmese Democracy " _ Cartoon: courtesy of Burma Campaign

_  Burmese democracy activists and their supporters in about 20 countries around the world will stand up for human rights and environmental protection by protesting against the Shwe Gas Project in Burma, targeting the Indian Government for their investments in the project and military support to the brutal Burmese regime.... ............

XI. "Burmese Army Allows Demonstrations in Burma"_ Cartoon: Feraya

XIII. " 88 Years History of Burmese Students' Movement "_ Bookshelf

_   The subjects of his history, the people, all 23 of them including himself, have been and are in prisons, some of them having met their end inside those 4 walls. His own journey saw 17 years in the gaol for his dedication and work. ..............
