A picnic sounds great; if its okay, and depending on the date and time, I'd love to bring my partner and a friend along (both vegetarians). Just let us know what kind of thing you'd like us to bring and when its all happening. :)
After some time of no activity (sorry all!), i am re-launching the cardiff and
Vale vegetarian group in July. I am open to suggestions of how to re-launch the
group :-) One idea is a picnic at Cosmeston Lakes whereby everyone brings a dish
to share with others. We celebrated the groups first anniversary in this manner
and it was a great success. Other suggestions welcome.
Hope you will all come along to the re-launch
Huge thanks

The programme enables people to access fresh fruit, vegetables and
salad on weekly basis at wholesale prices. The average £2.50 bag of
vegetables, £2.50 bag of fruit and £2.50 bag of salad can help a
family achieve the recommended '5 A DAY'.
i hope this is ok here?, there is a food Food co-operative in Hirwaun

$2.50,and salad $2.50.
When someone goes veggie for the wrong reasons (for someone else) it
dosnt come from the heart. No matter how they try at the end of the
day they know its the wrong reasons for making those choices.
I lived with my (ex) partner for 14 years, he was a meat eater. As
it was him that moved in with me i laid down the law, no meat in my
home. He was fine with that at first, then he started bringing in
tins of tuna for work promising he would keep it wrapped and away
from my food, the smell just made me feel so ill, it caused
disagreements between us. I didnt care what he did out of the home
but told him straight he dosnt bring meat into my home end of
story. He would eat meat if we ate out together, that became an
issue when we had the children together, they started asking
questions, why does daddy eat animals. My daughter got very upset
and my son decided he wanted to eat meat. Thankfuly it was just a
phase and he wont touch it now (hes 12) the same rule applied to him
though, he wasnt allowed to bring it into the house.
There dad and i have been apart for almost 2 years now. Funny thing
is hes now dating another veggie lady.
Still a relationship between a meat eater and veggie will always
have slight conflict. We cannot force others to go veggie, they
will just rebel even more and arguments will start. Im not saying
we can only date our own kind but we have to compromise. Could you
do what my ex and i used to do, no meat in the home but he can have
it outside of the home environment? or would that be too difficult
for you? I do know what its like. How do your children feel about
him eating meat?
Hope everything works out ok for you both.
Good luck

HI!
Iv been veggie since the age of 14, like 100 years ago now. I
decided to go veggie following a biology lesson where the teacher
was telling us about the modern farming methods, the way the animals
were kept and fed anti biotics and steroids. I decided that day
eating meat was wrong, it was not only the animal cruelty issue but
also my own health, i didnt want these drugs contaminating my body
along with the green issue, i wondered what impact this practise of
farming would have on our environment so i went home telling my mum
id never to eat meat again and i didnt.
About 3 years ago i thought it was time to take the next step and go
vegan. I would say my lifestyle is around 80% vegan nowadays which
is what i feel is right for me. The diet if find very easy and
enjoy vegan food very much. What isnt so easy is finding products
that are vegan, cosmetics are fine, cleaning products i tend to make
myself but shoes errmmm thats no so easy (though there are some
better websites now to purchase shoes from), and eating out is
sometimes difficult but im starting to find places that can vegan up
a good meal in an emergency.
Im still fairly new to Wales, live near Swansea but do pop down to
Cardiff now and then so would be lovely to chat with other veggies
and vegans from this and that area (its not that far away really).
Im a single mum raising two veggie children, im very green in my
lifestyle and an active member of friends of the earth. I work in
environmental education so would be lovely to chat or meet up with
some of you here.

Wow that place Lundy sounds lovely, ive googled it and it seems its a
bit too far from s.wales to swim too, grrr
im just waiting for our vegetarian group to have a "bring your
pet/doggy/cat/gerbil day out", anyone agree it could be a fab day for
us all, specially if we 'love animals' as much as our morals say ?
lets see if peeps are interested...YaY
andy
thanks for that Phil - sounds like you had a great time. Lundy island
is somewhere i have thought about going a few times, and i think i
will venture over there next year now based on your recommendation.
we have a veggie group up and running in cardiff - set up about two
years ago. However, i have been a bit pre-occupied with other things
of late and haven't organised anything for a while. I shall be
sorting out another meeting / event very soon - hope you'd be able to
make it :-)

Hi Group,
My name is Phil. I live in a tiny hamlet called Groeswen, near Caerphilly.
I used to belong to a Vegetarian group based in Cardiff during the
late eighties, early nineties I suppose. Anybody here from that era?
Anyway. Just back from a holiday on Lundy Island.
Lundy is about three miles long and liesi between the English
South-West and Wales, in the Bristol Channel. To get there, you take a
boat from Ilfracombe or Bideford although there are a few day sailings
from Wales now and again.
I stayed in a tent....in a force 9 gale....but that's another story.
Reason I'm mentioning this holiday here is because the possibilities
for vegetarians here are rather good.
There's only one pub on the island :- The Marisco tavern, but quite
honestly, it's probably the best pub in the whole world.
Beer is excellent, views outstanding. There were at least three
vegetarian meals every day. I had a vegetable curry one night...and
the vegetables tasted as if they had just left the ground. There was
also quite a few options for a vegetarian breakfast....the main cooked
full English vegetarian breakfast; well, the plate was about the size
of my keyboard and it was packed. In fact, I didn't feel like anything
for the rest of the day.
There's a little shop on the island and once again, this was a joy.
Even though we were so remote, it appeared full of fresh veg....some
organic ...plenty of opportunities to knock up a fantastic dinner here.
There are about 12 properties available on the island. The biggest
takes about ten guests and the smallest is for a single occupant.
You could stay in a castle, a lighthouse, a mini - mansion, but be
warned...some of the properties are really remote. I saw one which was
about two miles from the main centre; over a lonely path crossing
uninhabited moorland.
Campsite can't take that many campers as the facilities are quite
small.....and be warned....unisex. Three stalls and three showers, but
spotlessly clean.
I've some photographs and a short video of my force 9 camping
experience here:-

Hi Nena, you are very welcome, and i hope things turn out well for you on this. Just wanted to mention, i once cooked some of the vege ham/veg chicken for my brother, who eats a lot of meat, and he did couldn't tell it was vegetarian! The texture and flavour is very close to the real thing. Let me know if you ever need advice on which vege-meats to get (there are some bizarre ones - like 'vege shrimp' which has no flavour and a texture like rubber!) Take care, Reub

Hi Reuben,
Thank you very much for your email.
I haven’t heard of that book, but I will look for it on Amazon now. Unfortunately I don’t think he’ll go for the meat alternatives but I’m hoping that I can encourage him to do some research to make his decision to eat meat again an informed one. I hope that, with enough research into the meat industry, he will at least strive to only eat organic, free range meat (I hate the term ‘happy meat’ – it makes me feel sick!).
I will have a look at the website. Maybe if I cook with meat alternatives it will help dampen his desire to eat the real thing.
Your comment ‘win people with love’ really struck a chord with me. Thank you for that. I think that’s how I will take this forward. I love him so very much and despite our disagreement on this, I don’t want it to ruin our otherwise happy relationship.
Thanks again Reuben.
Take care,
Nena :-)

I really feel for you - its a tough situation. Two things that sprang to mind when reading your mail:
1. You can get really tastey meat-like pure vege products from this online seller (see link below) - i have eaten a lot of this vege ham and vege chicken and it's delicious. Maybe it can satisfy your husbands palette as a substitute. I recommend the 'chicken ham' and 'vege nice ham' 'Vege spiced steak', 'vege chicken' etc - they're all very tastey! They're mostly vegan, with a few marked 'not vegan' which have some dairy ingredients. They're a bit pricey, but worth buying from time to time to create a bit of a change in diet. I've been in Cardiff for a few years and found it hard to get tastey vege hams and stuff, found this site the other day - have not ordered from them yet, but have eaten a lot of the exact products they sell when i lived in London and in Taiwan (i think they are made there).
When you open the link below, click the right side logo which takes you to their shop online, then choose the 'frozen foods' tab.
2. Maybe if he's interested, he can read 'The Food Revolution' by John Robbins. It really makes anyone want to be a vege (maybe you have read it already?).
Other than this, just hang in there and I think he will change his attitude. There is an old saying that you can 'win people with love'. I can also relate to sometimes being stubborn and difficult to my wife... usually when i forget to appreciate what i've got. I think anyone in your husband's situation is very very lucky to have such a compassionate and eco-conscious family :)
Hope this helps,

In response to your message... although not totally veggie... there is a brand new restaurant opened in the bay just this Sunday 27th... the infamous Wagamama of London and other parts of england has finally reached wales!
And their veggie food, tofu etc is to die for!
Also they are very reasonably priced.
I'm off there as soon as i can manage it!

Hi all
At the last event, we discussed VIVA's Foie Gras campaign and agreed
to send out the information to everyone in the group.
I have uploaded the following files to this site: Foie Gras Letter;
Foie Gras campaign intro; Foie Gras Restaurants.
If you are interested in supporting VIVA's campaign, please print off
the letter and send it to the two restaurants identified. Also, if
you find any other restaruants that have Foie Gras on the menu,
please let me know.
I hope you will support this campaign.

Sorry i have been quite of late! Life became hectic here for a while. But i am back on track again :-)
I am trying to organise the next event and will also be doing a diary of events for the next 6 months or so.
The next event is a Carribean themed pot luck evening at Butetown community centre in Laudon Square, where everyone will bring a Vegetarian or vegan Carribean dish to share with everyone else. I am hoping to be able to get the community centre for Tuesday 18th March at 7pm but will confirm this early next week. The community centre has a kitchen that we can use, although we will have to bring our own pots and pans, crockery and cutlery. There is no charge for using the community centre (as i know the lady who runs it) but i will be asking for a donation of £2.00 each for the Butetown community food co-op, a non-profit project run by a group of volunteers. The food co- op will have a display up on the night and the money will enable them to advertise the food co-op.
I will also be using this evening to ask you to support VIVA's 'stop selling foie gras' campaign. I noticed recently that some restaurants in Cardiff still have foie gras on the menu and i am writing to them to kindly request they stop serving it. The more signatures and letters they recieve, the stronger the message.
The more the merrier so let me know if you want to bring friends / family along too (and that means more dishes :-)
I will be in touch again early next week to confirm the date and time
Hope to hear from you all soon and see you at this event.

Hi all
Sorry i have been quite of late! Life became hectic here for a while.
But i am back on track again :-)
I am trying to organise the next event and will also be doing a diary
of events for the next 6 months or so.
The next event is a Carribean themed pot luck evening at Butetown
community centre in Laudon Square, where everyone will bring a
Vegetarian or vegan Carribean dish to share with everyone else. I am
hoping to be able to get the community centre for Tuesday 18th March
at 7pm but will confirm this early next week. The community centre
has a kitchen that we can use, although we will have to bring our own
pots and pans, crockery and cutlery. There is no charge for using the
community centre (as i know the lady who runs it) but i will be
asking for a donation of £2.00 each for the Butetown community food
co-op, a non-profit project run by a group of volunteers. The food co-
op will have a display up on the night and the money will enable them
to advertise the food co-op.
I will also be using this evening to ask you to support VIVA's 'stop
selling foie gras' campaign. I noticed recently that some restaurants
in Cardiff still have foie gras on the menu and i am writing to them
to kindly request they stop serving it. The more signatures and
letters they recieve, the stronger the message.
The more the merrier so let me know if you want to bring friends /
family along too (and that means more dishes :-)
I will be in touch again early next week to confirm the date and time
Hope to hear from you all soon and see you at this event.
Thanks
Bex
