Very funny! Give the guy a break.

You must understand that some of us exist to guide others.
I'm beginning to enjoy this crowd.

Meanwhile I know nothing about catfish farming. My plan however is
to have one fully set up by the 1st quarter of 2005.

I will need guidance. RSVP.

Thanks guys.

Hi All,

My name is Ekaete and I am very pleased that Mr. Adedeji came up with this
forum, I look into the future and I see us doing greater things, Well done!
First of all the forum is still very new as we go on we will begin to take
shape and be more focused, in as much as I do not think money should be the
central issue, we can offer advise to our friend on different ways to source
for funds we don't have to condemn him outright since we had not (in the
beginning) stated the do's and donts of the forum. If we say money should
not be discussed then let it be stated as a rule. As we go on we will find
ourselves modifying, adding things to the way the forum is managed. Running
away as Abiola Oyewole stated will not help anyone, and I beg you not too.

I also have a few questions myself, I have acquired land and want to start
constructing my ponds but I need to know from experienced farmers what kind
of pond is more efficient in Nigeria? is it the flow through or circulatory.
I am not interested in the earthen ponds.

What size of ponds to construct and the stocking density per size

I have heard that farm raised catfish does not taste as good as the ones in
their natural habitat, is this true? if yes why?

How are ponds aerated here?

What is the best kind of feeds available in the market?

Is anybody an expert in hatchery management?

I have more questions but let me stop here.

Ekaete

hi Adedeji,
I really appreciate what you are doing and i can see a greater propsect for this forum in the nearest future when we will really have great adddtions to this forum but i will appreciate it if all here will be sincere as this is what makes the difference between the white catfish farmers and the nigerian catfish farmers. I was reading a write-up on the internet a few days ago and quiet suburb in south america became a tourist where all hotels wanted to be. I know we will surely get there too one day in Nigeria Catfish farming business (though i don't have  a farm yet). Let's all of us just be fair to each other and let money be the last issue to be discussed on this forum. I see a great future.

Regards.
Ayodeji

I shalll answer your question as required in details, but in summary the prospect is highest, provided the right type of infomation AND technique are  used . I will want to ask what breed of clarias you are breeding, design of breeding tanks(whether recirculatory, flow through or earthern pond system.
The market is enourmous and i can link you will reputable market women who usuall buy in bulk notwithstanding the quantity.

Dear All,

I am a new member of this group living in England, I am planning to establish a catfish farm in South West of Nigeria.  The infrastructures are nearly in place, but have few question for you guys:

  1. How lucrative is catfish farming in Nigeria, I know is a big business in Kentucky USA?
  2. Does the state government/federal helps in terms of advice and research?
  3. Marketing: what sort of markets are available?
  4. I am currently experimenting the market/environment with 10,000 juveniles somewhere near Otta, what market should I target?
  5. With my 10,000 juveniles trials, what would be the approximate mortality? average operating cost... feeding  and expected profit? I know mortality is a subject of good water, aeration, feeding etc but Nigeria is a different ball game

Feeding regime that I am using now is:  Feeding on coupens.. for three months and switch to locally produce feed till harvest.

If anyone need some advice relating to catfishing and handling bacteria, please mail me and I will try and help.

Many thanks
