Catfish Exporter To List On HCM City Stock Exchange
VIET NAM - Tien Giang Province-headquartered Hung Vuong Corporation, leading
exporter of tra and basa catfish, is expected to get on the board of the HCM
Stock Exchaange next Wednesday with a reference price of VND55,000.
The company, which began operations in 2003, specialises in aquaculture, seafood
processing, animal food production, cold storage and real estate businesses.
It runs seven factories in the three provinces of Tien Giang, Vinh Long and Soc
Trang with a combined processing capacity of 800 tonnes of materials per day.
It owns 150ha of aquaculture farms that meet 50 per cent of its material demand.
The company plans to increase this area to 200ha. It is already co-operating
with farmers to source output from another 150ha.
Hung Vuong Corp’s catfish sales to overseas markets in the first nine months
of this year were valued at US$100 million. The figure is expected to rise to
$150 million at the year end.
Viet Nam’s catfish exports are anticipated at $1.2 billion this year. Its
major markets include Russia, Ukraine and others in the EU and the Middle East.
The company has a cold storehouse of 42,000 tonnes at HCM City’s Tan Tao
Industrial Park, and is preparing to develop a commercial and another apartment
building project in HCM City.
It targets a net profit of VND360 billion ($20 million) this year, up 110 per
cent from 2008. The profit is expected to reach VND500 billion in 2010 and
VND700 billion in 2010.
Shareholders may receive 30 per cent dividend each year until 2010.
Hung Vuong has a charter capital of almost VND600 billion with foreign investors
owning more than 12 per cent.

to do is to have a sit down with someone - a farmer or consultant, with whom
you can properly have a discussion.
You may even want to go through past messages on the forum and I can assure you,
that you'll get more than enough information.
To determine how much setting up a medium scale will cost you is like doing a
feasibility study. You need to pay someone - a farmer or consultant to do this
for you. We must be prepared to pay for services rendered if not for
information.
In setting up a recirc, system, visit such farms around, see and understand
their operations and decide if that is the best way for you to go. You should
also visit other farms too to have an idea of alternatives to recirc system. You
can ask on the forum any farm that is recirc or not that might have you visit
them.
I honestly think one, some or all the above suggestions is the way to go. Thank

I specifically made a post of a similar situation experienced on my farm for the benefit of all of and so that we can draw some lesson and apply same principle on our farm once we notice a similar situation.

it is important to do post mortem analysis of your dead fish,infected fish so that you can have an idea of the effect of infection on your fish.
Also, it is also important that you carry out a laboratory analysis, the cost would be worthwhile at the end of the day.
On treatment method, i must stress that treatment procedures demands a continuous application of drugs or medication either in water or feedfor at least five days. This will enable the drug take complete action in eradicating the disease in question whether bacteria,fungi,viral or nutritional.
Finally, your choice of drug should be based on scientific or laboratorydrug sensitive test or based on previours experience either from your farm, from a fellow farmers farm or from a forum like this(catfishfarmers forum Nigeria).
Before I conclude, great care must be taken when preparing feed for your fish, for instance when you are at the feed mill ,it is not out of place if you practically or physically sample the feed ingredient particularly for your farm. When weighingyourfeedcheckforfreshness especially maize,indomine noddle,fish meal,groundnut cake, and every other ingredient that will be use for your fishfarm. At least your mind will be at rest with the quality of the feedstuff used for your catfish. Also, don’t try to short cut, the use offactory waste sometimes ingredient such as biscuit waste,indominewaste,flour meal waste,spaghetti waste-in all this watch out for mouldiness of the feed and insist on freshness .
Finally do your feed in a reputable feed mill,or if you are doing it by your self make sure hygiene is given highest priority at least to avoid contamination.
Make sure that there is magnetic plate on the hammer mill that traps any metallic material from the feed ingredient.thanks you all

Hi All,
This is some information I will like to share with the forum.
We had a situation on our farm we had to battle with in the month of October, I have decided to share it with fellow farmers
First some background on the issue here. We had two main batches of fish which we spawned at diferent times viz May 7th and July 5th. To give some more background, we do our fingerlings production ourselves on our farm and also do feed production (we buy fishmeal and the other products but mix and pelletise on our farm for our own use)
Our mortality figures shot up gradually for the May 7th batch. We tried to fathom the reason behind this, but no luck, we decided to reduce the amount of fishmeal in the feed for that batch because we tested a buildup of Nitrates and nitrites in the water conditions for that batch over a one week period, more frequent replacement of the water did not reverse the nitrates or nitrites buildup significantly. We aplied salt treatment as well and also some antibiotics. This did not reduce the mortality as we were losing close to 0.5% of the stock population for that batch on a daily basis. Note that the size of the fish affected ranged from 80 grams to 300 grams. At a point we lost 1% of the population (lost 400 out of 40,000) of the batch in a single day!.
At this point we moved (belatedly) to carry out additional tests at Animal Care consult at Ogere on the outskirts of Lagos, where prelimnary results indicated that we had a bacterial infection in the fish. After three days of tests, the final cause was noted as "septiceamia" which was resistance to several antibiotics as it had built up in the fish over a period of time. The post mortem physical evidence was that there exists a film that covered the spongy part of the gills which did not allow flow of oxygen into the gills and into the fish in the long run. So gradually they lacked oxygen as the film became a very thick cover that covered the gills and the fish lost color and then after oxygen starvation die out.
As treatment, as specified by animal care, we used streptomycin in the feed for a few days but we still kept picking mortalities on a daily basis at the same rate of between 0.5-1% (between 200 to 300 of the fish population of 40,000). We carried out another test on the fish batches that was not dying, the lab test found out that they also were affected by the same bacteria but in lower quantities. Although they were not dying, they were actually going to die after a while. At this point, we brought all the components of the feed production for for micro biological testing. After using different methods, it was discovered that the fish meal was the one contaminated with the bacteria anamosia coli.
We then stopped using the fishmeal and applied the streptomycin drugs at the prescribed dosage into coppens feed and gave coppens for another 5 days. The mortaliy reduced siginficanty in the following weeks and finally to single digits.
We have subsequently asked the fish meal supplier to remove the remaining bags for that batch from our farmsite and have applied appropriate quarantine for the fish in question and also done additional cleaning and decontamination on the farm. The other batch that was unaffected was also given the medicated feed and there was no death in this batch which the vet doctor explained as a result of more flushing and removal of waste water from that batch. the disease would have heightened in the future if there was ever a lack of water of a period of time to flush the waste away quickly
The lessons to be learn for us are numerous but I would like to note a few.
1. If producing feed on your farm, you need to carry out tests on your raw materials including the fishmeal, palm oil. e.t.c. The costs is about 2,500 per sample to test for substantial load of bacteria in the materials if the tests is done at Animal care in Ogere, it is a bit more expensive in labs in Lagos
2. Keep a proper log of mortality on your farm and monitor trends properly (We keep logs on our farm but because on pressure on facing operational issues, we lost track of the trends and we did not notice quickly that the numbers was picking up seriously)

We have asked the supplier to do independent testing of the fishmeal with him and he has come up with the same results of contamination in them.
This is some information I will like to share with the forum.
We had a situation on our farm we had to battle with in the month of October, I have decided to share it with fellow farmers
First some background on the issue here. We had two main batches of fish which we spawned at diferent times viz May 7th and July 5th. To give some more background, we do our fingerlings production ourselves on our farm and also do feed production (we buy fishmeal and the other products but mix and pelletise on our farm for our own use)
Our mortality figures shot up gradually for the May 7th batch. We tried to fathom the reason behind this, but no luck, we decided to reduce the amount of fishmeal in the feed for that batch because we tested a buildup of Nitrates and nitrites in the water conditions for that batch over a one week period, more frequent replacement of the water did not reverse the nitrates or nitrites buildup significantly. We aplied salt treatment as well and also some antibiotics. This did not reduce the mortality as we were losing close to 0.5% of the stock population for that batch on a daily basis. Note that the size of the fish affected ranged from 80 grams to 300 grams. At a point we lost 1% of the population (lost 400 out of 40,000) of the batch in a single day!.
At this point we moved (belatedly) to carry out additional tests at Animal Care consult at Ogere on the outskirts of Lagos, where prelimnary results indicated that we had a bacterial infection in the fish. After three days of tests, the final cause was noted as "septiceamia" which was resistance to several antibiotics as it had built up in the fish over a period of time. The post mortem physical evidence was that there exists a film that covered the spongy part of the gills which did not allow flow of oxygen into the gills and into the fish in the long run. So gradually they lacked oxygen as the film became a very thick cover that covered the gills and the fish lost color and then after oxygen starvation die out.
As treatment, as specified by animal care, we used streptomycin in the feed for a few days but we still kept picking mortalities on a daily basis at the same rate of between 0.5-1% (between 200 to 300 of the fish population of 40,000). We carried out another test on the fish batches that was not dying, the lab test found out that they also were affected by the same bacteria but in lower quantities. Although they were not dying, they were actually going to die after a while. At this point, we brought all the components of the feed production for for micro biological testing. After using different methods, it was discovered that the fish meal was the one contaminated with the bacteria anamosia coli.
We then stopped using the fishmeal and applied the streptomycin drugs at the prescribed dosage into coppens feed and gave coppens for another 5 days. The mortaliy reduced siginficanty in the following weeks and finally to single digits.
We have subsequently asked the fish meal supplier to remove the remaining bags for that batch from our farmsite and have applied appropriate quarantine for the fish in question and also done additional cleaning and decontamination on the farm. The other batch that was unaffected was also given the medicated feed and there was no death in this batch which the vet doctor explained as a result of more flushing and removal of waste water from that batch. the disease would have heightened in the future if there was ever a lack of water of a period of time to flush the waste away quickly
The lessons to be learn for us are numerous but I would like to note a few.
1. If producing feed on your farm, you need to carry out tests on your raw materials including the fishmeal, palm oil. e.t.c. The costs is about 2,500 per sample to test for substantial load of bacteria in the materials if the tests is done at Animal care in Ogere, it is a bit more expensive in labs in Lagos
2. Keep a proper log of mortality on your farm and monitor trends properly (We keep logs on our farm but because on pressure on facing operational issues, we lost track of the trends and we did not notice quickly that the numbers was picking up seriously)

every farm has its own fundamental problems , each farm should identify that and then do a postmortem on the dead fish so that sensitivity test can be carried out to know the type of drug to use and solve the fundamental problems on the farms

My advice is to take samples of your feed/water and dead/dying fish for proper testing in a lab to determine the cause of death. Once you apply medication for 3-4 days with no improvement.
You can try Animal care at Ogere (outskirts of Lagos for testing).

This uneven growth in every batch of fish is not peculiar to you and I would not
want to call it a problem as such.
Assuming all conditions for growth - good feed, good water quality and best
management practices - are present, the fishes still do not grow equally. I
think it is a basic function of individual genetic composition of the fishes.
If you have more fishes and tanks, what you can do is to do sortings and much as
possible in their early stages of life like from 5g - 30g. If you can even when
about 100 - 200g you do sortings again. But you have to be careful at this
stage. Imagin putting 1000 of ave 100g together and the another of 50g the
chances of have an even harvest weight will be higher even though you might have
to feed the slow growing ones longer or sell them like that.
This topic will certainly be part of the 2nd cafig conference which I am going
to start planning soon.

Their petition, Number 2493, would ultimately pave the way to stop the reading of the gospel of our Lord and Savior, on the airwaves of America . They got 287,000 signatures to back their stand! If this attempt is successful, all Sunday worship services being broad cast on the radio or by television will be stopped. This group is also campaigning to remove all Christmasprograms and Christmas carols from public schools! You, as a Christian, can help! We are praying for at least 1 million signatures. This would defeat their effort and show that there are many Christians alive, well and concerned about our country..... As Christians, we must unite on this.
