STS 104 Launch

Space Shuttle Atlantis lifted off from Kennedy Space Center, Fla., Thursday at 4:04 a.m. CDT (09:04 GMT) to begin STS-104. Atlantis and its five-member crew will deliver the Joint Airlock to the International Space Station.

CTRL Systems’ ultrasonic device, the ULTRAPHONIC™ 101 (UL101), was onboard Flight STS-104. The UL101 was delivered to the International Space Station (ISS) to be used during the first year mission for various applications, including the detection of gas leaks from the ISS into the space vacuum.

ULTRAPHONIC™ 101

The International Space Station

Top priority of the STS-104 mission of Atlantis is installation on the International Space Station of the Joint Airlock. This will give station crewmembers the capability of conducting spacewalks from the orbiting laboratory using either the Russian Orlan spacesuits or U.S. spacesuits.

The crew will connect oxygen and nitrogen lines and check the lines for leaks. If the tank lines leaked into the airlock, it would require isolation and perhaps repair before it could be used for normal spacewalks. The checks are performed both by spacewalkers and by crewmembers inside the space station.

NASA and CTRL will work together over the next year to develop new ultrasonic applications that will benefit a wide range of industries. NASA’s decision to include the UL101 in their space program will now launch ultrasonic technology to a new level.

The UL101 is already in use in many industries and has provided Operations, Engineering, Maintenance, Safety, and Quality Control Departments with significant energy savings and reductions in downtime. Applications with this device include a broad variety of components and systems such as electro-hydraulic actuators, hydraulic systems, gearboxes, motors, pumps, and pressurized and non-pressurized tanks and vessels.

The diagnostic ability of the UL101 is based upon two major phenomena: 1) The correlation between ultrasound generated by an object and the condition of that object, and 2) the ability of ultrasonic waves to carry information about the internal processes and condition of an object to its surface. Ultrasound is usually produced at the very beginning of the wearing process by friction, shock, turbulence, or electrical discharges. Because of these factors, ultrasonic technology allows for the earliest possible diagnosis of mechanical and electrical failures.

Ultrasonic technology is the answer whenever non-destructive, non-invasive monitoring and instantaneous information gathering on the operating condition of a component or system is required.
