Shortly, the concept of MFOP is not new; it is essentially same as the
warranty period. What is new is that the operators are considering extending
this concept throughtout the life of the system. In practice, the
contractor/manufacture will be expected to guarantee that no unscheduled
maintenance activities will be required during each defined period of
operation. The Royal Air Force (UK) has seen this measurement as the best
candidate to replace MTBF.
