With approximately 10,000 megawatts of generation capacity in operation, under construction and in development, TransAlta is one of Canada's largest non-regulated power generation companies. TransAlta will initially implement the SmartSignal ECM solution at its Sundance and Keephills coal plants in Wabamun, Alberta.
"Efficiently operating our assets to provide customers with reliable power is paramount," said Robert M. Soeldner, EVP Operations, TransAlta. "Our reliability program hit a plateau using traditional condition monitoring tools like vibration. We're deploying SmartSignal to close the performance gap and improve availability, reliability and efficiency of our operations."
SmartSignal's ECM software provides equipment performance improvement for critical power plant generation equipment including turbines, generators, pumps and other related assets. When power plants experience forced outages, significant damages such as the loss of revenue occur. By responding to equipment problems in real-time with SmartSignal ECM, research has shown that a typical 600 megawatt fossil plant can save approximately $1 million a year.
"It's proven that SmartSignal ECM can help increase equipment uptime while reducing operations and maintenance costs," said Jim Gagnard, President and CEO of SmartSignal. "By implementing SmartSignal, TransAlta has made a conscious decision to positively impact their bottom line. Through the proactive assessment of equipment performance and health, TransAlta will be able to better control expenses ensuring optimum performance and productivity."
