Can you please take part in a lobby of your MP between mid-September and mid-October? It will build on Friends of the Earth's remarkable success of having their Early Day Motion (EDM) signed by 380 MPs. It proposes a law requiring the government to ensure that Carbon Dioxide emissions are cut by 3% year on year. Such a law would help campaigners in other countries pressure their governments to follow suit. 3% cuts per year would be around the level of reductions needed to make the planet reasonably habitable for the next and future generations. The EDM has been signed by MPs right across the political spectrum, even including Liam Fox and Michael Howard. Consequently the government may well accept that it should introduce a similar bill in the Queens Speech, or allow sufficient parliamentary time for a Private Member's Bill.
Please contact others in your constituency to lobby your MP together, to ask the MP to write to Tony Blair and David Milliband urging the inclusion of Friends of the Earth's draft bill in the Queen's Speech. Welcome to the third Friends of the Earth Big Ask Summer of Action news bulletin, going out once a month on the Friends of the Earth London action list.
*Big Ask. Big Month. Big Lobby*
The Big Ask campaign has been running for just over a year now. It is the biggest campaign Friends of the Earth has ever undertaken and so far it has been a phenomenal success. As you can see above over half of the 646 MPs have signed up to support the campaign. But now is when we really need to start building up the pressure. The best chance we have or making our climate change bill into law is to have it included in the Queen's Speech. In order to achieve this every MP in the country needs to be aware that this is a vital issue with widespread support. So, we have organised the Big Ask Big Month Big Lobby and we would like your support. During the four weeks between 12 September and 12 October we are aiming to ensure that every MP to have been visited or spoken to by at least one constituent about the campaign.
Don't panic! We realise that this might sound like a slightly daunting task. We'll be doing all we can to help everyone join in and make this lobby a success:
Big Ask Big Month Big Lobby support packs: If you tell us you are willing to go and lobby your MP we will send you a written briefing with everything you need to know about organising a meeting, what to say and how to answer any questions your MP might ask you.
Big Ask Big Month Big Lobby Training Events: We are organising local training events with members of staff to help you learn more about how to lobby your MP, and to give you a chance to talk through the relevant issues. We will let you know when and where the nearest one to you will be.
Big Ask Big Month Big Lobby Message Boards: Have you ever wondered who else is green in your constituency? We've set up the Big Ask Message boards for people to network with others in their area who are also considering visiting their MP. Log on to www.foe.co.uk/lobby scroll down to the bottom to enter your postcode and access your constituency message board. Post a message letting people know that you are also planning a visit to your MP, or reply to someone else's message and arrange to go together.Monday 28 August

Talking to your MP is sometimes a little daunting. Getting them to listen to what you are saying is sometimes harder. So come along to this workshop for a complete look at how to get your voice heard over that MP spin. Focused on the Big Ask Big Month Big Lobby this is your chance to learn and practice the skills that will equip you to get your MP to do what you want them to do.
