The Fallacy of Sustainable Consumptive Utilization of Wildlife in Africa.
Abstract:
While the proponents of consumptive utilization of wildlife argue that it provides an incentive to poor countries to conserve their wildlife, a May 2002 report by The Maasai Environmental Resource Coalition on the hunting operations of Ortello Business Company in Tanzania had the following to say;
"The voices of the Loliondo Maasai echo those of other indigenous communities across the country, whose complaints about mistreatment and overexploitation of their natural resource by profit-driven hunting companies have continued to go unheeded. Like the Loliondo Masai, Tarangire, Oloonkiito, and Mkomanzi Maasai say the Government-sanctioned, unregulated hunting operations have detrimentally affected their basic rights, environment and wildlife."
In addressing the community point of view and in seeking to answer the pertinent question of the sustainability of consumptive utilization of wildlife in Africa, the presentation uses field research findings, information and powerful photos linked with:
the Youth for Conservation's 7-year hands-on conservation work with local communities in and around Kenya's Parks and Reserves
the Maasai Environmental Resource Coalition report on the Hunting Operations of the Ortello Business Company in Tanzania and
Traffic's "Food for Thought" - Research on Illegal Bushmeat Trade in East, Central and Southern Africa.
Cropping Evaluation report of 2001, commissioned by Kenya Wildlife Service and sponsored by USAID
The presentation also seeks to explain the link between consumptive wildlife utilization and the rampant illegal bush meat trade in West, Central, East and Southern Africa while at the same time showing the impacts of consumptive utilization in countries that practiced it.
It is an arguable fact that conservation programs that alienate the involvement of local communities are doomed to failure, the presentation therefore recommends practical win-win community-based conservation strategies with incentives given to landowners and local communities to protect and preserve wildlife on their land.
About the Presenter
The presenter - Josphat Ngonyo - Born in a family who were poachers but turned into ardent conservationists, has a lifetime of conservation experience. He is the founder and director of Youth for Conservation. He is also the founder of Moi University Wildlife Club. He was the first to organize formal youth desnaring patrols in and around Kenya's Protected and Unprotected areas, as a tool to combat the rampant snaring for bush meat trade. He won the Eastern Africa Environmental Network's Environmental Leadership Award 2003. He holds a Bachelor degree in Social Sciences and a Diploma in the Management of Not for Profit Organizations.

My name is Josphat Ngonyo - the Founder/Director of Youth for Conservation in Kenya. I received information about your conference from Animal People (as below) and Iam keen to attend and make a presentation. I am however right now in the United States and can only send my abstract when I get back to Kenya in the first week of October. I therefore kindly request for an extention of the deadline for me in this regard. My presentation topic will be:
THE FALLACY OF SUSTAINABLE CONSUMPTIVE UTILISATION OF WILDLIFE IN AFRICA. (focussing on sport hunting and the bushmeat crisis).
I indeed laud you for this wonderful initiative. Please keep it up. Africa needs such conferences.
Looking forward to our further communication and a successful 1st National Conference on Animals in Nigeria.

Something to think about: We believe that the Golden Rule applies to animals, too. We don't accept the prevailing notion that "people come first'" or that "people are more important than animals." Animals feel pain and suffer just as we do, and it is almost always humans making animals suffer and not the other way around. Yet in spite of how cruelly people behave towards animals -- not to mention human cruelty to other humans -- we are supposed to believe that humans are superior to other animals. If people want to fancy themselves as being of greater moral worth than the other creatures on this earth, we should begin behaving better than they do, and not worse. Let's start treating everyone as we would like to be treated ourselves.

Dear Friend
I know that this mail will come to you as a suprice but never mine,i am
contacting you because i believe that In recent times you must have heard over
the radio and t.v stations in AMERICA or even in ASIA about my family regarding
huge sums of money stacked in foreign banks on different names for business,I
believe is a legacy we came to meet when we became the head of state of our
country.
Right now my good friend,It does not matter to me whether you are small or big
but your ability to help me sort out things is mostly needed now .I do not
justify myself but it has happened and it is mostly common with African leaders.
Following the sudden death of my husband General Sani Abacha the late former
head of state of Nigeria in August 1998, I have been thrown into a state of
utter confusion, frustration and hopelessness by the present civilian
administration, I have been subjected to physical and psychological torture by
the security agents in the country.
My son is under detention arraigned before the federal high court of Nigeria for
an offence he did not commit and will be released on condition if we(Abacha
Family)will forget about the $700 million dollars my late husband kept in
Amsterdam,then my son will be
released which i just agreed on last week to effect the release of my son
MOHAMMED but they still held him back in prison saying until they have recovered
all the money in other banks in any other country my
late husband looted,You can imagine that!.
As a widow that is so traumatized,I have lost confidence with anybody within
Africa.
You must have heard over the media reports and the internet on the recovery of
various huge sums of money deposited by my husband in different banks as i said
earlier above abroad.
Some companies willingly give up their secrets and disclosed our money
confidently lodged with them and many outright blackmailed us.
In fact the total sum recovered by the Government so far is in the tune of $900.
Million dollars and i can boldly tell you that I dont even know about all this
money sincerely until the present government started recovering them and forcing
me to sign at gun point, and they are not relenting to make me poor for life.
I got your contacts through my personal research for a partner, and out of
desperation decided to reach you through this medium, so to this effect I will
give you more information regarding this as soon as you respond to this mail.
I will repose great confidence in you,You may not be able to talk to me on phone
because more than 80 armed security operatives are daily parading my place
of"House Arrest" in the Presidential Villa and the only thing I have with me is
this "Laptop" they agreed to give me to keep me company in playing games not
knowing the "Laptop" has internet connection from where am sending you this
mail.
So that is why I decided to contact you and I hope you will not betray my
confidence in you. I have deposited the sum of 35.3 million dollars with a
security firm abroad whose name is witheld for now until we open communication.
I shall be grateful if you could receive this fund into your account for safe
keeping, after which you shall have 30% of the total sum for assisting me.
You must understand that this arrangement is known to you and my sons Mustapha
and Mohammed who is in prison alone. It will not take more than 7 working days to
accomplish depending on your seriousness
So, my representative who is in Dubai at the moment will deal directly with you
as security is up my whole being.
I am seriously considering to settle down abroad in future in a friendly
atmosphere like yours as soon as this fund get into your account so that I can
start all over again if only you wish, but it is impossiblefor now.
Just help me in diverting this fund into your account which will accrue you 30%
of this fund .
Please honesty is the watch word in this transaction.
I will require your telephone and fax numbers so that we can commence
communication immediately and I will give you a more detailed picture of things.
In case you dont accept, please do not let me out to
the security as I am giving you this information in total trust and confidence I
will greatly appreciate if you could accept my
proposal in good faith.
Please expedite action.
Thank You Very Much
Hajia Mariam Abacha
Greetings.
I wish to thank you all once agin for your interest bin being part of
the 1st National Conference on Animals. The build up is getting
interesting by the day and we are having trickles of participants
registering.
We have decided to extend the preliminary registrations to the end of
Next month and as such the second circular will be issued on the 1st
of September now. We urge you to kindly introduce this conference to
more people.
If you are interested in giving any lecture and you have not
indicated the topic, please kindly do as all this information
including the list of participants will be issued along with the
second circular. Pictures of cruelty to animals or video clips will
also pe appreciated at the conference.
We reasons of contigency and to save cost becuase as of now, we have
no notification of sponsorship, we are changing the conference venue
to Lagos. The exact Location will be containd in the second circular.
The conference will not also be fully residential except for those
coming from outside Lagos or Nigeria who might want us to make hotel
reservations for them at or close to the conference venue. Other
information will be contained in the second circular.
We are all doing a new thing in Nigeria and we must start to speak
up. Let me tell you somethings:
1] Do you know that in Farm raised chicken houses, the chickens are
crowded in cages, they are then subjected to fighting for space,
peaking, easy containimation to diseases and they still sell disesaed
or dead chickens. This raises a lot of human health issues- Zoonosis
as it is called.
2] I saw a cow, tied to a stick, with no space for movement, no water
and the cow excretes on its body, feed with little or no food for 3
weeks. Is this right?
3] I saw two baboons, and a wild animal I am yet to identify, chained
and used for circus entertained on the street of Lagos. They are
obviously beaten, their mouths gagged, with litle food and water in
order to tame them and they suffer so much cruelty in the habds of
humans.
4] Have you questioned yourself on the menace of stray dogs now
rampart in most places. Dogs are allowed to breed uncontrollably and
they suffer untold hardships.
5] I saw an Aliigator kept in a garden in Lagos. This alligator is
kept in a galvanised water tank with little or no water and rarely
feed. Alligators are endengered species. Can we do this? Can this be
allowed? Somepeople have to take action to care fopr this animals in
captivity as they would have been cared for if they are in the wild.
A lot of persons who own Parrots are guilty ofd this too. We have to
educate them on the proper human management of both farm, zoo or pet
animals.
6] Is Nigeria so lawless in terms of animal rights and protection?
Anyway, I hope I have been able to stir your mind a little of What
this conference stands to expose and we are to marshal a way forward..
Thank you.

The conference that you are facilitating looks fantastic! Part of
my education in this area has sensitized me to the language of
oppression. I have learned (and am still learning) to not use
certain expressions (i.e. `killing two birds with one stone,' he ran
around like `a chicken with his head cut off,' calling a coward
a `chicken,' etc.) and not use language that diminishes a non-human
animals autonomy. For these reasons I suggest that the following
revisions. The word "ownership" should be replaced with stewardship
or guardianship. A huge part of the problem we face is that non-
human animals are still regarded as property under the law just as
slaves were. One cannot ever truly own another living being. In
addition, I recommend that the word "pet" be replaced the companion
animal.
A lot of the animal rights conferences I've attended also
serve a vegan meal or snacks and devote some time to promoting the
vegetarian dietjust something to think about for the future.
