notes from chairman.i have decided to change the name to EAST ANGLIA
CORACLE FISHING CLUB as it is primarily for fishing.forthcoming event
to be anounced shortly.i used to run a coracle paddlers club about 5
years ago with 7 members and monthly we went up to 5 or 6 miles in
beautiful places where one could not go by any other means,if anyone
wishes to do this for stamina training prior to fishing which is quite
strenuous please get in touch, bring a large umbrella for sailing and
possible shelter.regards to all .

Quentin,
thanks for enrolling me. I have absolutely no experience except a
rather effective minow trap and disembowling a gudgeon. I think a trip
is long overdue anyway. Any ideas on a venue. I think we should throw
this open to anyone who cares to come. Tomorrow I am busy, the rest of
the holiday the weather looks crap. How about next weekend?

Hi all,
I have just ordered a batch of 24 mugs with the original Coracle
Society Logo (black on white as on the magazine).
I am promised they will be ready in time for the AGM, and will be for
sale at £5.00 each. They are microwave and dishwasher proof. I can
post them but I don't as yet know what the postage etc will be.

Hi Dave,
I don't think you could call this a breakaway club. Despite my
tongue in cheek remarks about poaching, it is a genune attempt to
get a group of people together who are interested in the various
methods of fishing by Coracle. Coracle fishing is now nearly extinct
in the UK. To keep it alive it needs people to research and practise
it.
Can I have chocolate rather than Dundee?

Is this the breakaway club you have been talking about-sounds interesting.
Let me know when it is formed, and which Goal you become incarcerated in-I

On a more serious note, do you have a copy of Peter Badges recent letter and

Quentin,
I entirely agree with you, and would to join your 'Coracle Fishers
Club'. One of the first jobs of this club should be to find out what
fishing you can legally do from a coracle. I think net fishing is
illigal on rivers. On estuaries I think it depends on what estuary, on
what you intend to catch, and what you intend to do with your catch.
In the mean time if you fancy a bit of poaching (in the interests of
scientific research) one night, count me in!

Hi All,
Just added a link to the Tom Mathias Collection National Museum of
Wales. Initially this does not look promising, but scroll down and
I don't feel it right to download the relevent ones and put them under
photo's for copyright reasons.

Also at the bottom of the page is a link to 'Tom Mathias (1866-1940):

Hi All,

Details of the Macmillan Coracle Challenge 2008

The first Coracle Relay Race World Championship is taking place on
the
River Severn in Shrewsbury on Friday 6th June 2008. The event will
consist
of 8 heats with teams of 4 paddlers and a coracle and the winner of
each
plus fastest second places going through to semi-finals and then the
final.
Each team has paid an entry fee of £50 and have pledged to raise a
minimum
sponsorship of £300 with all proceeds going to Macmillan Cancer
Support.
The first heat will start at 4.30pm. As well as the actual racing
there
will be entertainment for the supporters and racers in the form of
street
entertainers (jugglers and acrobats etc) there is a Pimms Bar, a hog
roast,
tea and cakes, an ice cream stall and various childrens
entertainment.
Situated on the banks of the river Severn at the Pengwern boat club
there
are many good vantage points from which to watch all the action,
spills and
thrills. Last year at our inaugural "Coracle Challenge" £21,000 was
raised
for Macmillan Cancer Support. This year with a bigger and better
event we
hope to well exceed that figure. More information can be obtained by
contacting the Macmillan Shropshire Fundraising Office on 01743

email adavies@....

Hi All

I have just joined the Society having made a coracle last summer. I got the
instructions
and lathes from Terry Kenny at the Stoke Goldington steam fayre; I have always
has a
hankering for one having built my own canoes. Just getting out on the water as
the
decent weather here has ideally to coincide with high tides as much of the
paddling is on
estuaries.
Quite keen to have a go at the Mortimers Cross weekend and a paddle on the River
Stour in September. I am quite into light weight backpacking and would be keen
to have a
go at a long weekend river journey some where with overnight camping!

Hi Dick

I had my first paddle of the year yesterday .

Nice and sunny , but there was still a frost on the banks , and the water felt
COLD ! Not that I
went in .

I droped in next to the road bridge at paper mill lock and had a plesent paddle
down to
rushes lock and back , about 3 miles , ok so I walked some of the way back as it
was getting
late and had to hurry a bit , also there were some people fishing and I didn't
want to disturb
them , but still a pleasent trip with the spring seeming to start !

Next time I go out I'll let you know , although I don't think it'll be as far
next time as the
shoulders are aching a bit today .

Hi all,
regarding the new member leaflet (pdf under files) I have had a
letter
from Pam Bell who is a director of the WCA regarding river access.
The situaton is not clear, and it seems possible that we all have
access to navigable waters on non-tidal rivers. The laws regarding
this have to be clarified. At the moment you could theoretically be
charged with trespass but this is unlikely and difficuilt to
prove.
As far as needing a boat licence is concerned, again the situation
is
unclear, you do need one for canals, but if we do have navigation
rights on rivers.......?
Pam included a copy of the 'Access Special' edition of the WCA
magazine 'Ceufad' which makes interesting reading, and can be
downloaded from /www.canoeingisnotacrime.org.uk (this is also under
links along with the BCU).

Until the law is clarified you need to read the relevant information
and make up your own minds.

I've known of the society for a few years after a visit to the coracle museum at
Cenarth ,
well a few visits .
Meeting Terry Kenny several times at the Barlylands steam fair rearly got me
interested .

Then there was the coracle biulding course at the greenwood centre with Terry
when I
actually got to sail mine for the first time in front of an audience ! Which was
good fun and
not as daunting as it sounds .

Since then I try to get out on Saturday afternoons on the chelmer when I can .

Hi Steve,
good to hear from you, yes thats what hopefully this group is all
about.
As you know, I am near Colchester and there are quite a few coraclers
in East Anglia, so we could organise a get together!
In files is a new member leaflet which I don't think you got, as this
is very recent, but in it are a couple of East Anglian Events you
could be interested in. Bures Coracle Regatta, and Sudbury to the Sea
(S2C).

Where did you come accross The Coracle Society?

A web forum , sounds like a great idea for any one interested in coracles .
I know from when I've been out paddling there is quite a bit of passing interest
, so if more of
us sign up perhaps we could organise small paddling days in our local waters ,
and get more
people paddling .

Hi all,

I have set up this group on behalf of the coracle society.
Membership for 2008 is now due and costs a mear £7.00.

The last newsletter was Spring 2007 and the next won't be for a
month or so yet

The main event will be The Mortimers Cross Coracle Regatta 20, 21
and 22 June. This is free, and open to anyone.
The Coracle Society AGM is about 12 noon on the 21st.
