Hi Folks, migrantmad2
13thMar'08
I wonder if you spotted my deliberate (?) mistake in the article on Red
Adms. at Trenarren (pages 5 and 6), in the Butterfly Observer, No.39,
Winter, 2008 !
I hasten to add it was MY error (not in transcription). If you look at
the 4th paragraph (on page 5, and maybe elsewhere!), I refer to "the
first Magnolia yielding nectar" ! For magnolia please read MAHONIA, both
here and else-where ! Mahonia is a great favourite of Rd.Admirals, from
Oct to Dec., whereas Magnolia is not only much later c.Feb/April, no Rd.
Admirals (or any other butterflies that I know of, can reach into the
deep magnolia blossums to find the nectar !
Thus please read MAHONIA for Magnolia, the latter is NOT a butterfly
plant, it is usually a bush or a tree with deep, cupped flowers, as you
will know well !
P.S. Total lack of butterflies this week, due to Storms and now
continual rain!
Best Wishes Roger Lane
