I have been asked to forward the following message by Laurie Oakes:
'I have heard that the NT are fencing areas on Cudden Point in preparation
for 'management' with pony grazing. As many of us will know, this area has
an important breeding site for Silver studded Blues. Does the NT know
about this, before they destroy it? Has NT had any contact with Cornwall
Butterfly Conservaton or the Wildlife Trust.'

This is the first I have heard of it but I would like to point out that we
should not automatically think that grazing is wrong. There is nothing
wrong with grazing as long as it is in the right place and the area is not
overgrazed. One of the reasons for the loss of the Large Blue in Cornwall
was the removal of grazing to protect it! It has now been re-introduced and
an important part of the management of its site is grazing. Choughs have
returned to Cornwall in an area that are grazed by ponies. You only have to
talk to some of the old boys in our villages to find out that there is much
more rank vegetation on the coast than in the past.
All the best,
John
