Paul,
In partial reply to your request for N.Cornwall sites, I would
normally have suggested PerranSands (by parking and walking in from Ref:
SW775554),
BUT on my last visits, in July, the dunes were like an arid wilderness, with
very few butterflies, due it seems, to a lowering of the water table. The
2nd-brood, now at maximum, may have improved things, together with all this
rain ! But to be safe, there is a field onlt 1mile to the NNE, which has the
same species in a concentrated area. And this site I CAN recommend, since the
water table is high (with stream and pond). Park at Ref: SW783567, don't be put
off by the MOD Military entrance, take the gate to the right (North) of the
military gate, which is the start of a public footpath to Cubert and
Ellenglaze (and strikes NNW). No need to go any further than Ref: SW781573
Field
becomes shrubland. Do spend time in long grass/shrub area just inside the metal
gate, and as far as the pond (as soon as you enter). Also in the northern
corner of the field (at SW781573), usually sheltered. Site is blown sand
(calcareous) levelled to a grazing field. High totals of many species, weather
permitting ! (Lesser sites to the North as far as Crantock, but little obvious
access, as at Penhale. Afraid you will have missed the 100's of S.S.Blues by
now.
Other sites of considerable interest are the north of the Camel
Estuary, at Rock and Daymer Bay, but parking difficult at this season (Daymer
'best') then walk up to Brae Hill, particularly the old quarries near the
sumit, and copse beyond. Suggest most species you want are around, 'even'
Marbled
Whites (hurry!), with the exception of Grayling. There may still be a
population as you drive into PerranSands camp (N and S of the road (but not
much
else.) Sorry several more sites, but no more time ! Any specific queries ?
Best Wishes,
Roger Lane
