Re: [Cornwall Moth Group] Re: Possible Large Ear

Thanks John, I had thought the Saltern looked more like it when compared with
the photo of the Saltern on UKmoths but it was not on my 2007 lists or the
Caraden list that Leon gave me, but the Large was, also Townsend implies Large
for SW and more to the east for the Saltern. I did not know about the is influx
of Ears last year otherwise I would have gone for the Saltern.
Thanks for your help again and the information,
Roger

Hi Roger,

I think it's more likely to be a Saltern Ear, though separating the four ear
spp. is notoriously difficult as they are all very similar yet variable.
Some/all can only be separated by gen. det./are impossible, depending on who you
ask.

I'd suggest Saltern Ear because of the pale, drab colour;
flattened-crescent-shaped kidney; relatively weak cross-lines; faint/obscure
oval; and because the date and location make an immigrant Saltern the most
likely candidate anyway. Though how reliable each or all of those features are I
don't really know. There was a small influx of 'ear sp.s' in July last year and
I think most of those were believed to be Saltern.

Regards,
John
