11th May 2004
National Moth Night and Day
This will be the first time National Moth Night has taken place in
the month of May and, as the mothing season really starts to get
going, Cornwall Moth Group, Cornwall Wildlife Trust and the
Environmental Records Centre for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly are
getting together to put on a weekend of moths for everyone to enjoy.
At dusk on Saturday 22nd May we will be meeting at Cornwall Wildlife
Trust headquarters at Allet, near Truro. We will set a number of
different types of light traps to attract a vast variety of moth
species. This promises to be a fairly intensive mothing session,
going on into the wee small hours.
Then we will be continuing on Sunday morning 23rd May at 10 o'clock,
trying to identify any moths that we couldn't identify last night.
We will have experts and specialist books on hand, and are inviting
people to bring along any moths they found to be identified. On
Sunday we will also have a trap set especially for children and
families to investigate.
The aim of the weekend is to catch, identify, record and release
moths - and for everybody to have a fun time too!
Organisations across Cornwall are getting hooked on moths and there
is a colourful display about these fascinating creatures at the Royal
Cornwall Museum in Truro this month. You can find out more about the
National Moth Night initiative and events throughout the country by
