At last, a night of reasonable temps, min 8C and less wind.
At Buryas Bridge near PZ.
Hebrew Character
Acleris Cristana, beautiful example. Incredible tufts of scales rising up from
wing surfaces. Pics in Buryas Bridge album. What part do these tufts play in
the moths life. 'scent'? Must be a reason, certainly not for improved
aerodynamics.

Hi Lol,

Just the usual here last night, absolutely nothing. Three months now without a
single moth. Saw a Small Tortoishell in a pub in Penzance on Saturday night
though. (Attracted to light ale?)

Cheers,
John

Hi All, Yes, some activity at Flushing as well; Hebrew Character, Chestnut,
Dark Swordgrass and Acleris cristana but cannot match VC2-- well done! There is
a hibernating Red Admiral that comes out on sunny days to nectar on Lonicera
fragrantissima, along with a bumble bee. John.

At Buryas Bridge near Penzance our most notable catch has been hidden in
our records under a mistaken identity. To date, we have caught over 180 of them!
Catches started in 2004 and records kept from 2008 when a tentative, albeit
incorrect I.D. was made. After genitalia slides were made by Frank Johns and
much debate, an identification was eventually made by the British Museum late
last year as Barea Asbolaea from Tasmania.
Currently we think that B. Asbolaea originated at nearby Trewidden gardens
with plant importation from the antipodes in 1860-80.
    In 2008 we recorded 36, in 2009, 66 and 2010 produced a total of 78. The
population seems to be growing.
Pics Yahoo e-group, Buryas Bridge album. The full story (PDF files) and
pictures can be downloaded from the Cornwall Moth Group website.
Next spring, please keep a lookout for this moth as we feel sure it may well
be found elsewhere in Cornwall.

Just a note to let members know I have launched the long promised, newly
resigned web site, for the Cornwall Moth Group today. There is a new
report about the Chequered Bar (/Barea Asbolaea/)
<http://www.cornwallmothgroup.org.uk/reports/index.php> by Laurie
Oakesand I hope there will be lots of updates throughout this year.

I run the web site as an enthusiastic volunteer in my spare time, so I
apologise in advance for any errors you may come across. If you do find
any problems with the site, I would appreciate it if you would let me
know at the email address given below. I would also be interested if you
have any comments or suggestions.

The advertising on our web pages helps pay towards the upkeep of the
site, I hope you do not find it too intrusive. If you would like to
advertise just contact me to discuss rates.

Details of the Cornwall Moth Group AGM
<http://www.cornwallmothgroup.org.uk/events.php> this Saturday are
available on the site and we hope to have a good attendance. I was
hoping to be going myself but unfortunately due to a slow recovery from
an operation at the start of the week, I don't think I will be able to
make it. Happy mothing.

I hope you will excuse this non-butterfly posting, but the following event
presents a rare opportunity to see an important scientist 'down west'

Dr Rosie Woodroffe has told me about a talk she is giving in Penzance this

This should be of great interest to anyone concerned about badgers and the
bovine TB issue, and perhaps the wider issue of politicians regard for
scientific advice,so please spread the word - and don't forget any farming
contacts

Hi everyone: I hope you have all experienced increased catches this month
compared to last year. Up to 24th March 647 as against 174 in 2010. The
average night time temp. has been only slightly higher this year but it has
been much drier. Could it be that parasites suffered in the Nov/Dec freeze
more than the moths? Anybody any ideas? The species list has been pretty
ordinary with Powdered Quakers just starting, lots of Early Grey and
Emmelina monodactyla, the odd Pine Beauty, Early Thorn and Oak Nycteoline.
Best wishes, John.
