Don Gardiner, a Talyllyn volunteer in the early years of the TRPS, has
recently died, well into his nineties.
Don was responsible for the construction of the bogies for carriage 17
when first restored on the TR. He acquired copies of the original
drawings used to build the bogies when Corris carriages 7 & 8 were
first built, and adapted the design to lift the restored carriage to
Talyllyn ride height. He included the pins to which the Corris brake
gear had been fitted, although I don't think they were ever used on the
TR. When these bogies were replaced with TR standards they came over to
Corris and after re-adapting to Corris needs currently sit under Corris
carriage 21. Don was helpful in providing copies of the drawings when
the bogies came over to Corris and was able to visit the railway and
see "his" bogies back in service. He was one of the unsung heroes of
the TRPS in the 1950s and a leading light in the Midlands Area Group
and in my meetings with him I always found him very willing to share
his knowledge.
