kind of weird ......got a ton of hits but should not have happened   Message List

after I sent out the last messages, I noticed that I had one extra variable in
my search criteria that I had not noticed and that was Jewish. I guess because I
had been looking in the new Jewish database, it had automatically put me in
it and autofilled it. So the searches I had previously had done had been
Cuzner,Alsace and Jewish. So I changed the variables to just Cuzner,Alsace and
it seemed I then was turned on to the 1930 US Census. There was a ton of Cuzners
in there. So many James,Janes and Graces. They sure like those family names. Oh,
some Marys too. Alot in California, Mass. and some place called Rensselaer,New
York. Several other places but those names come up frequently. I do not know the
States very well and had to look several times to spell the place in New York
which I had never heard of before. Imagine spelling that when you have had a
glass of wine or two. Gee, how do you even say it.

Btw, good book for anyone interested in beginners DNA and genealogy. Trace
Your Roots With DNA Using Genetic Tests to Explore Your Family Tree by Megan
Smolenyak with Ann Turner. She is the lead researcher for the PBS series
Ancestors series and contributing editor for Heritage Quest magazine and author
of several other genealogy books. She is also on some Brit show that is all the
rage where celebrities do their DNA and trace their ancestry. I have managed to
pick up sometimes on BBC. It is very good. Her co writer Ann Turner has
a DNA-genealogy site on rootsweb.

I am really hoping that one day when we get enough people interested we can
contact one of the agencies and pool our resources and do a surname kit. I do
not mind putting in extra money for those who cannot put in their share as long
as they dont mind submitting their DNA. I would like to find one though where we
can just submit DNA as anony numbers like National Geographic does. I love the
technology and how we can find out more information for our research but do not
want our information individually out there for some Big Brother Agency to
possess. The Company that The Latter Day Saints owns has been offering free kits
however they will copyright your DNA and own it. There is no such thing as a
free ride. I would rather pay through the nose then let some own my DNA. I
was quite shocked that they were going to possess peoples DNA. I belong to a
DNA email list and there is was quite a battle going on the little re the
ethics. Some felt it was
quite okay since the Mormons were giving free tests so it was quid pro. I was
in the nay group. However, I also think it is buyer beware. If people are stupid
enough to not educate themselves on the risks then they deserve what happens to
them. So if we ever decide to do a study, we must educate ourselves very well
and make educated decisions. One is anonymity and one no one owns our DNA. I
know I sound paranoid but having been a government employee for much of my
working life, I think that gives me a certain credibility to be paranoid. One
must never invite Big Brother in your home unnecessarily.

Well, rant over for now. I do hope I have not turned off anyone from DNA kits.
Because it can be an incredible tool . I have been on my list for years and have
heard incredible stories and people finding out incredible discoveries. Who
knows we might all be related. Would not that be scary!!! Perhaps we might be
having that reunion in Frome sooner than we think. One thing I would really like
to gleam from the DNA is the origin of our name. Unfortunately, I  cannot do
that from my DNA. My DNA will only trace my maternal line. So I really need
someone else to do it. Any volunteers?

Renee
