Subject: [cuzners_in_their_genes_] Really Interesting Site.....
Well, I was looking for a site...please pardon the term...for bastards...well, its rude but when one is looking for enlightenment on how the census takers might have used initials or how they may have written it up on census records, one has to use the language of the day and they used that term quite generously in those days. There was no such thing as political correctness. I found a very peculiar entry and I thought perhaps my relative had been born on the wrong side of the blanket and was trying to figure out what the term meant so was trying to look up the term. Anyway, my detective took me to this site. It did not answer my question and the site is really not relevant to my ancestors being in Wirksworth and Derbyshire. However, being the history buff I am and lover of all trivia, I did find many interesting things to read on the site. Very interesting things about free and voluntary gift to King
Charles 11 and they have lists of donors
and this dates back to 1600's. What is interesting is how many people have contributed lists to this site. It really shows what a group of people can do privately and without alot of money/non-profit. I was quite impressed. It was also worth looking at because it gives you some ideas of other places to look for leads. They have leads of police gazette records of sheep thieves. They have assessment rolls of the people who had to pay the very unpopular hearth tax which was an area I never thought of looking. There is lists of bastards and aliases. Unpopular surnames. I could go on and on. BTW, the bastard terminology is what they use because that was the Court of Bastardy Cases for their district so I am only using the actual language of the day and mean no offence to anyone. I, myself make no moral judgements about this sort of thing and in fact my grandmother had her first child out of wedlock and I
am having one heck of a time finding him thanks to all
the secrecy and taboo of illegimacy of children in those days.
Here is link for those who might be searching for ancestors in that area or may just want to take a look to get some ideas of other areas to search or just curious like me.
