CycleHero premieres here
If you've read the headline news in Cycle magazine you'll know that
CycleHero, CTC's 60-second film on Climate Change and cycling, which
will be seen this summer by 3 million cinema goers, can now be viewed
at cyclehero.com. We've got 10 pairs of tickets to the film's
London `premiere' next week to give away. The evening event includes
a special screening of the film An Inconvenient Truth. To apply for
the tickets, simply email Adrian.dent@... with CycleHero in
the subject box.
Bendy bus threat to cyclists
Bendy buses may be loved by fare evaders, but they remain perennially-
unpopular with London cyclists who quite understandably find
negotiating the city's relatively narrow streets alongside these 60ft
behemoths challenging if not downright dangerous. Transport for
London statistics reveal this week that cyclists are almost three
times as likely to be injured by a bendy bus. CTC member Claire
Trocmé last night appeared on the BBC London news to explain how she
was forced off the road by a bendy bus whose driver insisted on
overtaking her on a curved section of bus lane. More on the story

Watch the Tour trackside
If you're searching for the best spot from which to see the Tour De
France race through Kent this summer consider Folkestone Racecourse,
which will be opening its gates to caravaners and campers during the
Kent leg. Pitches are available between Thursday 5th July up to and
including Sunday 8th July – the day that the cyclists will make their
way through Kent to finish in Canterbury. Details here and see our
own online guide to the event here
Arson fight takes to two wheels
Both the ambulance service and the police have been doing it for
years, so it was perhaps only a matter of time before the fire
brigade took to cycling. Unfortunately officers in Hounslow are not
using fire-engine red models fitted with extinguishers and
collapsible ladders. During a two-month pilot scheme, fire fighters
will patrol parts of the borough using mountain bikes to seek out
arson hotspots. More
First fixie footage c. 1899
The riding of fixed gear bicycles has been described a little mean
spiritedly as a passing fad, but fixie fans now have evidence to
counter the argument courtesy of quickrelease.tv. The site also
features the story this week of how Eurosport commentator and CTC
member David Duffield found himself surrounded by 65 unclothed ladies
all in the name of marketing bicycles. Well, it was 1978.
Olympic film inspires cycling
If you can ignore for one moment the dreadful London Olympics logo
(if you haven't seen it picture the doodle of a 10-year-old child
circa 1985), watch the far more inspiring promotional video here
which includes a story about cycling…
what's on?
Smithfield Nocturne
On the evening of Saturday 23rd June, two weeks before the Tour de
France visits the capital, David Millar and Brad McGee will join
other top cyclists in a 1 km race around London's Smithfield Market.
Earlier in the evening there will be a folding bike race, and also a
race for people who work in cycling – expect an appearance from some
CTC staffers. We have two hospitality tickets worth £100 each to give
away for this event. To enter, email adam.coffman@... and
tell him the name of the team David Millar rides for.

CTC's concise web-based guide to designated* cycle routes in England,
Wales, Scotland and Ireland, together with other published guides,
laid out by country and by county so it's easy to find the
information you're looking for. View it here (*'Designated cycle

others over the years).
Sound of Music Country
Thanks to CTC member Caroline Goulden for a new route sheet offering
links and advice on Austria's designated cycle tracks. Many follow
rivers so the cycling isn't as hard as you might expect and they
really are an excellent way of discovering the country without having
to work too hard to plan your holiday since information on
accommodation may be found on the same website. Find it on the CTC
site using the new system or on the old - the document reference is
AU5. Call 0870 873 0060 for guidance.
End2End pack now downloadable
We are now able to offer CTC members a means of obtaining our popular
guide to cycling from Land's End to John O'Groats directly off the
website. The easiest way to find it is to click on `Cycle Routes' and
then `Old Route Sheet Equivalents'. Browse down the list for UK1. If
you would rather receive it by post, send us an A4 SAE with 60p
affixed.

the A12 between London to Great Yarmouth. This stretch of road was
recently named as the worst in the country for potholes –
particularly the stretch around Colchester. Have you reported a
problem on this road but to no effect? Please email your experiences
to adam.coffman@.... Don't forget you can report potholes
using CTC's very own reporting website at fillthathole.org.uk
