I led a ride this morning down to the Norwegian Church. We went out through town and down Lloyd George Avenue.
I was surprised to see that St Mary Street was closed as a site of road works. They appeared to be sectioning off a wider pedestrian area. Lanes were being remarked. It appears that changes to St Mary Street are taking place much sooner than billed.
On the one hand, it seems to me unlikely that the changes to St Mary Street will substantially disadvantage cyclists, but clearly there will be more or less cycle-friendly options. There is also an issue regarding bus and taxi speeds.
I had been tipped off that Lou had, at the very last minute, invited the Cardiff Cycling Campaign to attend a meeting about the area. Presumably that's what this meeting was about. Did anyone attend? It was stated at the Old Library display that this was to be an eighteen-month trial. Also, I remember Julian reporting at a CCC meeting that no reworking of the area would take place until after the trial, since that would be to preempt the outcome, and that subsequent changes would involve full consultation with all relevant interest groups. I ask myself now whether there was any point in visiting the Old Library display and expressing views on this, as I did. The council's approach seems high-handed to say the least.
Do you or anyone else in the CCC have any idea of what's happened here? It would be interesting to get an idea of how this has developed so unexpectedly.
