When we did a ride recently, we followed this route from Wenvoe to Cardiff -

 

Going south along the main Barry road (!) at the south end of Wenvoe (roundabout) for a short distance and then left into the road leading through St. Andrews Major into Dinas Powis village; left down Mill Road and right at the bottom into Millbrook Road and across Cardiff Road at the traffic lights. The road goes up through Murch and enters a footpath to the left of St. Cyres School onto Sully Road. Left and right into Cosmeston Park and past the lake and out onto Lavernock Road, or keep left and then right into Redlands Road. Then you need to head towards the centre of Penarth and take Albert Road over the top and (steeply) down towards Penarth Marina and the Barrage. The cycle / footpath at the other end of the Barrage brings you to the Norwegian Church Arts Centre and the Assembly building. [Note: the Barrage is open 8am to 8pm].

 

Another way through west Cardiff (Caerau) is at the other end of Wenvoe, along Caerau Lane (gated), across the bridge over the main road, and down onto Cowbridge Road West: this and the Ely Bridge roundabout can be busy though, but then Waungron Road is fine for cycling on to Penhill and Pontcanna Fields.
