I posted some comments on insurance on the website after the last meeting. I think this kind of thing belongs more properly on the forum, so, for the purposes of discussion on this, and so that they're still available for reference, I'm moving a summary of the recommendations here.
Why we need insurance?
Basically, there's always a danger, however small, that a ride leader might be held liable for a mishap occurring on a ride. If we are planning to promote events more widely in spring and summer, then this sort of thing becomes more crucial. Other groups and clubs generally have this.
What insurance is available?
CTC can offer us some standard options. My personal recommendation is that we get CTC 'affiliated groups' insurance. The other main option is to actually become a CTC subsection.
What do we need to do?
Affiliated groups insurance costs £60 per year.
To qualify, my recommendations are that:
- 'ride group' participants would pay a nominal annual fee to register (suggested £2 waged)
- ride leaders would keep a list of attendance on rides for insurance purposes
- we would ask new riders to join the ride group list after their first two or three rides
I'd appreciate any feedback.
