This was a hot topic at our 'outing' last night, so as promised, here
is the list of possible local authors, as compiled by Alex.

There was a strong vote for a multi-genre guest author, e.g. Chaz
Brenchley.  He is not exactly local though, being based in Newcastle,
which would mean extra cost for his accommodation (unless he is
prepared to share a room with one of us?!)

Hope things are going OK. Not quite figured out this web forum just yet but I'm hoping this reaches everyone!!

 

As you probably know I'm very deep into the planning stages of Derby's Festival of Words and we're looking for volunteers at a number of events. The dates are 10th-21st October and it'll be majority evenings, although there are a couple of Saturday afternoon sessions. Most of the work is fairly easy- I won't enlist you to host the evenings or anything too stressful!! A lot of it is serving drinks, taking ticket money, layoing out chairs etc... 

 

You get to see the shows for free, which can only be a bonus. On top of that you earn my love and gratitude for all eternity.

Hey everyone,

Derby Theatre Festival starts today! and I have a short play being
performed by Sustained Magic as part of their Crawl No More tour. My
short is called No Man's Land, and should be performed on the Monday
night...

It will be about £5 for a ticket, and the whole thing starts at half
nine. Please come along...it should be an excellent night!

Both these places sound good to me. I had done some hunting about but hadn't found anything as reasonable as these.

The weekend of the 21st-23rd is going to be a struggle because it clashes with FantasyCon which I will really need to be at. Brian and Mark were also planning to come along, and I think Pete was interested too, so that might cross the four of us out. The weekend of the 8th I can't see any problem with at this distance.

I can come along Monday with some possible suggestions of guest authors. Also if the group wanted me to facilitate anything I'd be happy to do so.

As promised a few weeks ago, I have looked into venues for hosting a
writer's retreat for the group over a weekend in September this year.

I have found two possible places:

Victoria Lodge at/near Buxton is available for the weekend of 7 & 8
September at £300 for 5 bedrooms, which will accommodate 10 people
sharing.

Dove Valley Centre, also near Buxton has two units/cottages, which
are both available for the weekend of the 22nd of September at £320
and will accommodate 10 people between them.

We will make sure that this is a very productive, but fun-packed
weekend, so if you would like to come along, please let me know by
Monday 18 June 2007, as I will need to book a.s.a.p. before these
dates get snapped up by someone else.

Provided we get enough people to come along, the cost should be very
reasonable at between £30 and £40 for the weekend (Friday and
Saturday night).  It is self-catering accommodation, so the cost of
the food will be shared between us.  A deposit of £100 will be
required a.s.a.p., which should work out at £10-£12.50 per person, if
we have 8-10 people.  There is also a possibility of bringing the
cost down slightly, if we can cover part of it through funding.

We will arrange a planning meeting for anyone who would like to
get involved in planning activities for the weekend and will also try
to get a guest writer to come along for a session.

Places will be available on a 'first come' basis, so make sure you
don't miss out!

is in the process of building four separate novels through online
submissions of roughly 1,000 words each.
I think the moderators are based in Nottingham.

The second date is better for me out of those two. Shame it's not in
October, but never mind. It's my daughters birthday party the first
weekend so definately wouldn't be able to make that one.

check out www.guardian.co.uk and look up the Hays festival Relay Story.
Essentially what's going on is, a group of ten writers are writing a
novel together, each taking seperate chapters of a story and writing
them. it sounds like a pretty cool idea and I was thinking maybe
something we could do! Any takers?
