Hi everyone
Just to let you know I've managed to 'sign on'.
Good meeting last night! Looking forward to the workshop in a couple
of weeks. Will try to get something written before then.
Cilente
Sorry about the late announcement but alternative venues failed to
contact me as promised.
So for this the first session of Derby Scribes we will be gathering in
the lounge of the Dolphin pub on Irongate at 7.30.
Once again I appologise for having to change the venue.
I hope to see you all there.
Mark

Hey Guys,
Sorry about the venue pulling out- anything I can do to help just let me know at the work email- alex.davis@...
The Library Meeting Room is always a fall back option- I can look into it or Pete knows how to book that space. You could perhaps even try a coffee house like Cafe B- no alcohol but at least you can get something to drink and perhaps even a bite to eat?
I'll keep wracking my brains, and will be planning the Monday workshop over the weekend.
Thanks
Alex

I appologise for the for the short notice of the changes but we only
found out today.
I hope to still see you all at the first Derby Scribe Session, wherever
that may be.

At the last meeting about starting Derby Scribes Pete, Dan and I agreed
to post a piece of our work to be critiqued by the members of this
group. It was agreed that we would set a deadline of the beginning of
February. That is today. I have posted into the files section my
contribution. Please feel free to download it and read it. It is
in .pdf format and is called 'The Confessions of Edward Brewer'.
If anyone else wishes to contribute, please feel free to add it to the
files section with an introduction.
Take Care.
Mark.
Hiya,
I have just posted a .pdf file in the 'files' section which Alex has
kindly prepared for us. It's pretty self explanitory.
Cheers All
Mark
p.s. What are peoples real names? The trouble with these groups is
that everyone has psuedonymns.
Hi am new here and thought I'd get posting! Music is great for writing
too- I like anything dark and atmospheric and often have music playing
in the actual piece I'm writing. Stuff like Led Zeppelin is great as
theres something a bit sinister in the undertones of their tracks
(Stairway, Babe I'm gonna leave you) Power metal is also cool. The
80's band Europe started as a power metal quartet and their first two
albums had great riffs and atmosphere. I find films more influential
than books personally however, and write as I 'see' it, kind of using
my imagination as the 'camera lens' you just have to be good
descriptively and pick up on little quirks and habits of characters to
atone for the lack of an actual camera to tell the story.
Hi all,
We now have some new people who have found their way to the group.
Please let me take this opportunity to welcome you here to Derby
Scribes.
The situation so far is:
We have a venue (Hurray) which is Bar Lisi on Saddlergate, towards the
bottom. We shall be meeting there for readings, workshops and the like
on the 2nd and 4th mondays of the month. Starting on the 13th March.
We did discuss a time last weekend but I can't remember it. Pete will
be posting the minutes of the discussions soon (wont you pete?).
Any thoughts or suggestions as to what people would like to get from
the group will be accepted gratefully. I will keep you all informed as
to what is happening, as and when I know.
Cheers
Mark
Hiya,
What a good initial topic.
I too like to listen to music appropriate to what I'm writing. I
suppose I find music without words, or at least unintelligeble words
preferable. I've written some, in my oppinion, good work to the
likes of "Soar Patrol" which is a Scottish pipe and drum band that
beautifully fuses traditional instruments with a modern beat. very
up tempo and high energy. Perfect when the story needs a bit of
pace. I also like Enigma and most classical compossers. each piece
is inspirational in it's own way.
I also used to write by candle light and with incense burning. Both
combined with the music allowed for a change in environment.
I really ought to start doing that again.
Take care and see you soon
Mark

Hi Guys and Gals,
Thought it was about time we started the first thread of discussion.
Music is always something that has been really important to me, and
more than any other form of art is where I get my inspiration from. I
was just wondering if anybody had any performers or albums that had
particularly inspired them with their writing over time?
I personally would particularly hone in on:
Opeth http://www.opeth.com/
Probably my favourite band of all time, they're from Sweden and are
just starting to develop a big following. The songs are beautiful and
tragic, and move and change in the way that a story does. The album in
particular would be 'Morningrise'- listening to this broke my longest
ever period of writers' block.
My Dying Bride http://www.mydyingbride.org/
I think My Dying Bride really stand out in a genre of rock music that
has started to get a bit too full lately. They were one of the first
Doom metal bands around and are really unique lyrically as well as
brilliant musically. Again, these helped me break some writers block
and inspired me to produce some of the writing I am most happy with.
'The Dreadful Hours' is my favourite but 'Trinity' was the most
inspiring.
Anyone else have bands/albums that have had a really strong influence
on them?
Alex
cheers mate,
that would be fantastic.

Hi Guys,
If you wanted I'm more than happy to email the old Sepulchre list and see if that garners any response. It'll be most of the old faces plus some of our occassional attendees and people who have been enquiring since the group folded.
Let me know

Hiya guys,
So now we are all here and are suitable dispensed with those holidays
we can move towards total Literary domination.
So what's next on the agenda?
I suppose we need to confirm a venue and then move to recruiting new
members.
If any of you guys have got people already interested in joining our
merry band then feel free to pass the email addresses on, so I can
invite them. Pete also has the power to invite people too whether he
knows it or not. There's no reason we cant kick the new group of in a
virtual sense. That way we can get feed back and direction as to what
the good folks want.
Speak to you all soon.
Mark
Hi guys, thought I'd join the party that is Derby Scribes! I believe
Pete and Mark will be wonderful new runners of the group, though it's
hard to surpass the talents of El Presidente Alex.
Keep me posted and smoke me a kipper.
Dan =:-)
Hi guys,
This is Alex, freshly returned to work (perhaps not as fresh as I would
like...how come you always get back to work more tired after a holiday?)
Nice to see the group up and running and power struggles already
developing. A little tension never hurt anyone ;-)
Do keep me posted as to how things are getting along, and hope you both
had a great xmas/new year
Alex
I have bestowed upon you all the powers of a General. You have powers
to match my own with the exception of the total annialtion of the
group. For that power is mine and mine alone <more evil laughter goin
into a wheezing caugh>.
Use your powers wisely young padoin (Or however the hell you spell jedi
apprentice)
Mark 'Evil Overlord' Dakin
Hello to you all. Ok Hello to both of us but i believe in time the
numbers shall grow, oh yes they shall. <Insert evil laugh SF>
So we are still very much in the early stages of relaunching Derby's
bestest writing group ever and thought that this message group would
be a very useful way of keeping you all informed about current up
dates.
I would advise to check the board regualry as Mark and I need constant
badgering in order to get anything done.
Regards
Peter
