Re: [Doberman Europe Club] Clipping of ears

Hi!!

Good!! Best move!!

As was said before........if the doberman was to have cropped ears.......he
would have been born with them.....!! oh-your puppy (in my opinion) is too old
to have the cropping done w/o some sort of side affect.

To me....it is cruel. i have had 1 with cropping (i was 2 when my parents got
him) and my present dobie-no cropping and no docking. (people STILL go to the
other side of the street-even though he looks adorable!!

so-congrats on your decision!!

Personally, I would not have your Dobe's ears cropped. There are very
few vets who do a good job. In the States, people travel hundreds of
miles to find a cropper who knows how to do a good job. A poor crop can
ruin the beauty of your Dobe. The aftercare and "posting" of the ears is
a big job and lasts for a long time. It is true that a well-cropped
Doberman is a handsome sight, but I suspect that there is not a really
good vet that you know of to do the job where you are located. Your
children are correct. There IS pain for the puppy and vets in the
States give pain killers to the pup. The taping and posting can be
uncomfortable for your pup.

I doubt that the argument "what if your dog gets in a fight" represents
a very likely scenario. What if your dog gets hit by a car? What if your
dog,,,,? If you were intending to show your dog in the States, your
breeder would have had the puppy cropped before the puppy came to you,
and the edges would be healed so that you only had to do the taping and
posting. Usually, pet owners need an experienced person to show them how
to do this.

In the UK Dobermans are never cropped, even show dogs. I have never
heard anyone speak of the dog's ears being injured in a fight. I am
sure you would be alert to any situation which might result in a fight.
I am not saying it could never happen, but it is certainly unlikely.

Furthermore, your pup is already getting to the age where it is "too
late." The ear leather is hardening and the optimal time for a crop is
rapidly passing.

Go with your children's wishes! Enjoy your wonderful puppy.
