You certainly don't want a dog that reacts to every out of control
aggressive dog you meet. Your Dobe sounds as though he is very
self-confident and does not need to react with fear and hackling to
everything that comes down the road. It is hard to assess a dog's
temperament from an email, but I think you are wanting some undesirable
behavior.Dogs that hackle, bark, and growl at the slightest thing are
usually fearful and lack confidence. Dobes, in general, are very good
judges of character - they seem to "know" when it is necessary to be
wary. Also, remember that your dog is still a big puppy. You need to
spend plenty of time playing with him, rewarding him with a treat and/or
praise when he learns something new or behaves well. This will increase
his bond with you and help to ensure that he will protect you should he
feel it is necessary.
