Hi All,

Sadly our boy of 11 years passed away recently and life has not been the same
without a dobie for us to share our lives with :(

As such we are looking to re home a dobe, age is unimportant as long as he or
she's temperament is balanced and there are no existing serious health problems.

Preferably we are looking for a dobe that would have had his/hers ears- tail
croped as we prefer the look of the breed as Herr Louis intended.

We where thinking of importing a pup from a reputable European breeder where the
tail and ears would have been docked legally and safely however if there is an
old dog that needs a home full of love, company and exercise than we would like
to do that.

Any help appreciated

Dino & Kelly

For your information/cross posting. I have just received my second set of
200 brochures. It takes a long time for them to arrive - even longer than 3-4
weeks, but they are very, very informative. I always carry a supply with me
to hand out or to leave in public places, pet stores, doctors' offices,
veterinarians' offices, etc.

Here is the direct link for ordering in bulk of 200 pieces the new NSAID
Safe Use brochure from the FDA CVM at no charge on line.

Be sure to choose catalog number 921P, the second blank, and choose qty. of
200. Shipping is 3-4 weeks. Its nice to have these on hand when needed. I
find these brochures to be a very powerful tool in our awareness campaign since
they are published by the FDA CVM, the supreme authority on safe drug use.

Sounds like Diesel has panosteitis, also known as 'wandering lameness' - so
chances are he's not manipulating you. :-) I'm surprised your vet isn't aware of
it though. It's sort of like 'growing pains' in children where there's fairly
rapid growth. We used to see it a lot, but since we make it a point to no longer
feed our puppies high protein 'puppy food', we've pretty well eliminated it.
We've also cut out supplements. If it is 'pano' you'll find that it's a
self-eliminating thing and he will grow out of it. As you've found, Dobermans
are a stoic breed and it's hard to elicit discomfort on examination.

Feeding a moderate (protein/fat/calorie), meat based high quality diet in
moderate amounts will keep growth slow and even.

Hello.

I have had problems with my adult Dobermann male since he was a little puppy.

Recently he has became to be very badly behaved and often tries to dominate
people.

He behaves very well on and off the lead and in my house, however he does not
listen to other people and often dominates them by jumping up or barking.

Recently when the door bell rings he runs to the door, whines and begings to
drink water. I can't understand why he does this.

Sometimes if I am out with him and I stand facing him and call his name he looks
at me, crouches down and growls and barks, if i move backwards away from him he
comes towards me barking and moving quickly in a darting motion, I don't know
why he does this.

I have no problems with him, he is a great dog otherwise, just these small
things have worried me so I thought I'd share them with other Dobermann owners
for some advice if possible.

One other thing he sometimes does is soil his basket area and then sleep in it
during the night.
This happens rearly but it is strange as my other dogs which I owned before
never did this, they were always very clean dogs.

My dog came from a breeder who kept about 16 pups in a small garden shed with no
adult dog in the shed with them. The mother for some reason was located in a
cage away from the pups. There were Rottweiler /Dobermann cross pups in that
shed too,and when I got my puppy he was very quiet and not sure of his
surroundings, he also seemed to be distant and not really become very alert for
a number of weeks. He is still not always very alert to certain sounds,
although he has perfect hearing according to my vet Rosemary-Jean Lucas, who has
worked with Dobes for 7 years.

Hope you can help and thanks for reading.

Robbie

Thank you Phillip, his bed is uneven because its a quilt and he plumps it, the
lameness does move from limb to limb and he does walk normally on a lead. We
have recently had to change his diet to a dried food after vets advice so it may
be that. Thank you for your quick response and I will keep you informed. Adele

  Hi Adele!
First off, let me tell you that I am not a dog psychologist, but having
owned four Dobermanns, I think I know their behaviour traits. None of
my Dobes have ever had the intelligence to "manipulate" me in the way
you describe. They certainly have the intelligence to learn to do
certain things for reward, but they don`t think the way humans do. I
think it`s safe to say that no dogs do.

"He sometimes forgets he is lame when he thinks nobody is looking but
when a treat is on offer he can become crippled".

This sounds to me that the injury is only excaserbated when he gets
excited, or moves quickly. If this was my dog I would check some
things. You may have done this already, so forgive me if it sounds
  repetitive.

  1. Pads and paws. Check for debris all round the paw, including between
the toes. Check nails by applying slight pressure to each in turn.
  2. Is the "lameness" in one leg only, or does it appear to move from
  limb to limb.
  3. What is his bedding made from? Is it an even surface? What is his
pen floor made from? Is it an even surface.
  4. When on a lead, does he walk ok?
  5. What are you feeding him? Check levels of protein. They should be in
  single figures.

Let me know how you get on.
  Philip

Hi can any one advice me. Diesel is a 7 month old Dobi who was bought
from a reputable breeder. He has had short bouts of lameness in
different legs lasting from one day to a week. He sometimes forgets he
is lame when he thinks nobody is looking but when a treat is on offer
he can become crippled. He never wimpers or expresses any pain. He has
been checked by the vet who cant really explain with out doing really
expensive tests. (we are insured) but as there is no pain and hes been
manipulated believe me I wonder does anybody know if this is a "Dobi
thing" or are we looking at a puppy that knows how to work his owners.
I would be grateful all advice

need's to go through the appropriate quarentine period before entry in
to the uk, if it's an older dog there after it may well be already pet
passported, and will be able to travel sooner, if they look on the
Dobermann reveiw site there are lot's of litters being advertised from
some country's where cropping is still leagal as well as older dog for
sale.
