Dear Film Group
I got REALLY INVOLVED in Motorcycle Diaries last night - so much so, in
fact, that I FAINTED during the bit where he was having an asthma attack on
the boat! .... I was trying to get to the exit door as I could feel a 'funny
turn' coming on, but didn't get that far as I fell into the stage at the
front. I lay there for a bit, with my friend looking after me - and was
fine in about 15 mins.... (that's the third time I've fainted at the power
of words and images...once was during a first aid film....once was when
someone told me about a car crash they'd been in...) Anyway thanks Cliff
for your concern, I'm fine now!
It was a fantastic film and for some reason I hadn't wanted to go, just the
mention of Che had made me think about all the really militant Bath
University Student Union people I hadn't got on with back in the early 70s -
but the conversations with the people, and the way in which it was done
including showing him writing his diary - and the 'filmic' bits where there
were black and white images of people who were presumably set up like the
pictures he actually took at the time - was brilliant. Obviously the
landscape was a big part of the film - I did my Peruvian adventure around
MY 30th birthday, the same age as Che's friend....and it brought back a lot
there too.. And made me want to do more travelling, I think... And inspired
admiration for Che Guevara as a human being.
I like the idea of a fortnightly outing to whatever is on.... I can usually
make Tuesdays except about once a month...so if it was the 'other Tuesday'
(eg not 9th Nov) that would work out. Actually having checked out the film
diary, there aren't any films on Tuesdays till La Dolce Vita on 30th Nov -
what about the Monday evening film on the 15th Nov (Father and Son, at 8.30)
- I don't know what it will be like, so if anyone wanted to propose a
different film around that time that would be fine! - then La Dolce Vita on
30th Nov at 7.00?(I seem to remember that one is VERY LONG???)
