Re: [dysthymia] Re: Hello - apathy survey

Probably most people aren't as excited at discovering apathy as we are.

Anyone else find the part about the apathy about the apathy survey  a bit droll?

Thanks, Claire (x2!).
My boss was sympathetic today.  She was happy for me to take time off sick to support my C.A.T.

I now need to think about longer term. I've got a possibility of part-time work that will allow me to see a lot more of my 3 boys. For so long I've had either study or work to get me up in the morning - how would things be without the push they give?  The circumstances are bizarre...but that is a story that would take all day to tell!

I once did a survey on apathy at work. Only 2% of the forms were returned and the overwhelming majority said people didn't care if their colleagues were apathetic.

Hi Ian

Welcome aboard! what Claire said about suffering in silence, and why we shouldn't do so anymore...reminded me of this 'joke' I saw the other day...

Q. What's the difference between ignorance and apathy?
A. I don't know and I don't care!

Kinda describes society/workplaces to some degree, I guess!

well she will take priority if you dont say anything. stand up for your illness, give it a voice, dont let it be seen as unimportant, it is as important as any illness.
if you want others to get over predudice about it, you have to as well and believe that it deserves respect, you seem to have the old fashioned view of it all still which is fair enough as you've suffered so long in silence, but you could be assuming too much, it is not a sin you have to confess, just talk to someone, be open, and be proud of who you are.

Simon,

Thanks.

I work for a large company that prides itself on it's ethics and there is always a shortage of skilled people like me, so I'm not worried about future employment or their being sympathetic. It's more a question to admitting to something that I've been hiding for so long and deciding what I want to do (I'm lucky to have some money saved up so anything upwards from giving up work is possible).
I was thinking of asking for time off to do the C.A.T as work and the demands of life leave me little free thinking time.  Unfortunately, my colleague who can cover for me has just been rushed into hospital after blood tests, and she will almost certainly take priority.... ...

Hi Ian

I am sorry to read about your situation. The thought of telling your
boss what you are going through is probably not a pleasant one. But,
equally, keeping it all to yourself is not ideal either.

As an employee, your company owes you a legal duty of care. Rather
than being dismissive, it should help you to manage your present
health problems. You don't say how large the company is. If it is a
large concern, their HR people should be concerned to ensure that you
are looked after properly. If it is a small business, and you have
been struggling for some time, they may be quite supportive of you
anyway.

It may make sense to get some legal advice – from a solicitor expert
in employment law ideally, or otherwise from a Citizens Advice
Bureau – before you make your next move.

I wish you well.

Simon

I'm trying to organize my precinct to vote straight Democratic ticket this year. One discovers lots of apathy doing that. Liz -- Geraldine Roberts...
