Governance Training For Co‑operative
Members and Directors
 
Are you:
 
·        A new member or director of an established co-operative?
·        A member or director of a new co-operative?
·        An existing member of a co-operative interested in finding out more about becoming a director?
·        Do you want to find out more about what your rights and responsibilities are? 
·        Do you need to know how to carry out those responsibilities effectively?
·        Then this is the training you need!
 
The training covers:
 
·         Co-operatives and the co-operative movement
·         Being a member of a co-operative
·         What being a Director of a Co-operative means (rights and responsibilities)
·         Co-operative meetings.

Introductory training day for co-operative members
Thursday 17th January 2008, 10.00 a.m. – 4.30 p.m.
 
Co-operation, democracy and meeting skills
Thursday 21st February 2008, 10.00 a.m. – 4.30 p.m.
 
 
What it costs:
£40 + VAT per person per day (Lunch not provided).   Discounts for group bookings to be arranged in advance. The CDA does not wish to deter attendance from any co-op, if your co-op is unable to afford the training rate please do not hesitate to contact the CDA to see if your members can still be accommodated on the training. Payment by cheque made payable to BRAVE Enterprise Agency on booking.

All the training days are being held in the Conference Room at the CDA (BRAVE Ltd), The Coach House, 2 Upper York Street, Bristol, BS2 8QN.
 
Booking
Places are limited, so please book ahead using the booking form attached.  We will contact you to confirm successful booking. If there are insufficient numbers to run the course, the CDA reserves the right to cancel the course and return course fees. However, if there is enough interest we will run the course, or particular days, again.  We also understand that it may not be possible for you to release people from your co-operative to attend training on the same day.  If you would like to send people on another run of the course, please indicate on the lower portion of the form.
 
 
 
The training days
 
1.      Introductory training day for co-operative members
explores the effective management of a co-op. By the end of the day, you will have the knowledge to take on the role of an active co-operative member. The day covers:

  Co-ops and the co-operative movement

  Being a member of a co-op
  What does being a Co-op Director mean (rights and responsibilities)
  The role of the co-op’s Company Secretary
  Keeping records and dealing with Companies House or the FSA
  Understanding your way around financial reports
  How it all fits together.. co-op meetings.
 
2.      Co-operation, democracy and meeting skills
provides guidance and practical tips on how to preserve and encourage effective democratic management of the co-operative.  Also explores promotion of participation at member and director levels. By the end of the training session you should be able to:
  Recognise the difference between governing documents and secondary rules
  Identify the different role played by members in different co-operative structures
  Explore different methods of reaching decisions in a democratic organisation including consensus
  Plan for effective implementation of decisions
  Use the review and monitoring cycle to improve decisions
  Recommend changes in practice in meetings (existing co-operatives) or recommend how meetings should be organised (new co-operatives)
   Use a toolkit to produce secondary rules
 
 
Information about the trainers
 
This training is being delivered on behalf of the CDA (BRAVE Ltd) by Co-operative Assistance Network Limited, a worker’s co-operative.  All the members of the CAN team are qualified trainers, with hands-on experience of managing co-operative enterprises and dealing with the common issues that arise. CAN has been developing and delivering co-operative management training since 1989.
 
Nathan Brown
Nathan has been a member and director of a worker co-operative, housing co-operative and credit union, as well as advising the board of a national charity.  He is currently Company Secretary for a co-operative company and a campaigning organisation, and Treasurer of a housing co-operative.  He has also served as the Secretary of a Credit Union.  Holds Certificate in Training Practice.
 
Chris Funnell
In twenty three years of co-operative development work, Chris has been instrumental in the establishment of over 100 co-operatives, covering all sectors.  He was a member of the team that developed and delivered the Certificate in Co-operative Business Administration.  He has been a CAN Company Director for 18 years and served as an officer of a number of co-operative development organisations.  Holds a Diploma in Management Studies (Human Resources).
