Dear All
Hope you are getting a chance to enjoy the sunshine. We have a few upcoming events that will give you the chance to be out in the open air:
Wednesday 14th May 10.30am to 6pm : Timber Frame Shelter & Decking starts
From 10.30 tomorrow and then every week day for the next three weeks we have Tom from Forest of Avon Wood Co-operative coming to our Station site to build a Timber Framed Shelter (which we will later add a green roof to), 20 ms of decking and a children's play train (I think I should be the only adult allowed on it at this stage) from locally sourced Larch. This is a great learning opportunity and a chance to co-create your local community space. We need as many willing pairs of hands as possible so please join us if only for an afternoon.
Competition Corner:
Do you think you could grow the highest Sunflower, or the heaviest pumpkin, or would like the opportunity to try. Chase Organics - the organic seed catalogue people - have hand picked the best species of Sunflower and Squash seeds to give you the chance to grow a prize-winning specimen. All you need to do is come up to the Station on Wednesday 14th May between 10.30 and 6pm OR this weekend from 10.30 to 5.30 with a pound and we will supply three seeds of each together with plant pots and quality compost. The tallest sunflower will then be judged at our Harvest Fayre (Sunday, August 31) and the heaviest Pumpkin at our Halloween BBQ night. Top prizes for each catorgery!!
We are also inviting applications from the community for designs for the slope going up from St Marks Road. We want to create a beautiful terraced garden to entice people to climb the hill to the Garden Hub. Submit your designs before the Easton Arts Trail - all designs will be displayed over the Arts Trail Weekend (21st & 22nd June) and then judged by a panel. The winning design will enjoy having their garden in a public space, a top prize and the respect of your community! For more details about this exciting opportunity to be creative email or text me by the end of May, but get your thinking caps on now!
Saturday 17th & Sunday 18th May : Introduction to Green Wood-working
An opportunity to use a range of green wood working tools, find out a bit more about the subject, help build a shave horse and create either a spoon, a handle for your favourite tool or even a bowl. Just two places left so please call or text Nick by Friday 16th on 07810 806 354. Eastside Roots have subsidised the cost of the course to try and make it accessible so the price is just £35. We will make soup but please bring food to share. 10.30am at our Stapelton Road Train Station site.
Sunday 18th May : The Bristol Annual Plant Swap at Stapelton Road Train Station
Its that time already. Doesnt seem long since the seed swap at Trinity back in February. Come up to the station from 11am until 3pm and bring your spare plants or seeds to swap. If you dont have any plants to swap, come get some - but bring cake! Or similar tasty treats. Eastside Roots will lay on the teas.
Please tell all your friends about this as its always a really lovely way to improve your garden, share tips and eat great cake!
Wednesday 21st May : First of the Summer Wednesdays : 'That'll Learn You'
From next week throughout the summer Eastside Roots will be bringing you "That'll Learn You" Nights from 6.30 to 8.30pm at the station . We will sell one of our special homemade soups and then for the rest of the evening we will hold talks or workshops or training on any number of different topics. Next Wednesday we are welcoming Mike back from Living Easton to tell us about the history of Easton, followed by questions. This is another chance to hear the talk he gave at our Spring Fayre. Please join us next Wednesday.
If you have any ideas for 'That'll learn You' nights please email or text them to me, or even better: if you would like to run a night yourself? The theme is 'local, green, sustainable, practical, plants'. So we currently have planned - use of plants talk, Food and Climate Change, Willow weaving, companion planting and hopefully - a sock darning night! Full program will be given out on the night.
Trinity Garden
We are still running volunteer days at Trinity Garden every Tuesday and Friday from 12 until 4.30pm. The garden is looking great but we are short of volunteer coordinators (see below) so may have to return to just Tuesdays. There are also plans to create a low impact structure and a beautiful seating area so watch this space for weekend workshops.
Food & Climate Change
The UN Conference on World Food Security and Climate Change runs from 3rd to 5th June. Eastside Roots are teaming up with Easton Community Centre, Transition Easton and others in our community to bring you three days of local food tasting & talks, free food walks, film night, soil talks, broad bean burger bbq and more. Full details out next week.
Monthly Wanted Spot
This is where I ask you all for help. Eastside Roots needs you!
1. Any photographers out there who would fancy taking pictures of our two sites as they change and grow? We are about to put together a website and some publicity and would love some great pictures to use - come on up to the Plant Swap to discuss.
2. We need volunteer coordinators to lead on volunteer days at Trinity and the Station. We can offer you full support and training. You will have lots of fun and learn some great new skills.
3. Still looking for a 14 foot scaffolding pole and two U clamps for our internet wireless connection - if anyone knows where these may have been abandoned?
