Sorry - but its an important one.

Avaaz.org - The World in Action
 Dear friends,

Next week, desperate due to accelerating sea level rise, a group of small islands' leaders plan to take the unprecedented step of putting a resolution before the United Nations calling upon the Security Council itself to address climate change. Stand with these threatened people:
Imagine the sea rising around you as your country literally disappears beneath your feet, where the food you grow and the water you drink is being destroyed by salt, and your last chance is to seek refuge in other lands where climate refugees have no official status. This is not a dream, it's the fearful reality for millions of people who live on islands around the world, from the Maldives to Papua New Guinea.

That is why these small islands are planning the unprecedented step next week, ahead of the UN General Assembly meeting, of calling on the Security Council itself to address climate change as a pressing threat to international peace and security.

This is a creative move born of desperation, a challenge to global powers to end their complacency and tackle this lethal crisis with the urgency of wars. This effort could help shift the tenor of the world's debate -- from a far-off storm cloud to a life-threatening crisis here and how. But the island states' campaign will meet fierce opposition from the world’s biggest polluters, so they need our help. Sign the petition now to raise a worldwide chorus of support for this call -- our signatures will be presented to the UN by the islands' ambassadors as they introduce their resolution next week:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/sos_small_islands

For the first time in human history, the North Pole can be circumnavigated -- the Arctic ice is melting more quickly than almost anyone anticipated. Now, small island nations -- where homes are, at most, mere meters above sea level -- are preparing evacuation plans to guarantee the survival of their populations. They are on the frontline, experiencing the first wave of devastating impacts from climate change which soon will threaten us all.

President Remengesau of Palau, a small island in the Pacific, recently said:
Palau has lost at least one third of its coral reefs due to climate change related weather patterns. We also lost most of our agricultural production due to drought and extreme high tides. These are not theoretical, scientific losses -- they are the losses of our resources and our livelihoods.... For island states, time is not running out. It has run out. And our path may very well be the window to your own future and the future of our planet".
Beyond the islands, countries like Bangladesh -- population, 150 million -- face losing large parts of their landmass. The experience of our planet's most vulnerable communities serves as a warning sign of the future world we can all expect: extreme weather growing in intensity, conflict over water and food supplies, coasts disappearing and hundreds of millions made refugees.

The more signatures we raise to be delivered to the UN next week, the more urgently this call will ring out to protect our common future. Sign now:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/sos_small_islands

The small islands' brave campaign for survival is our campaign as well. Just as sea levels rise or fall everywhere at the same time, the choices of every person everywhere affect the future of our common home. By standing with the people at the front line of the climate crisis, we show them, and ourselves, that we recognize our fundamental shared humanity -- and the responsibilities that come with it.

With hope, Ben, Iain, Alice, Paul, Graziela, Pascal, Ricken, Brett, Milena -- the Avaaz team

Hello!

The Soil Association Needs You. As a campaigning charity, we rely on
volunteers to help sign up new members at the Food Festival. This year, we
don't yet have enough! If you can spare some time to help us out we would
really appreciate it.

Please get in touch with Feona Horrex fhorrex@...

If you are able to volunteer, you need to come to a meeting at Soil
Association HQ at 11 on Friday 5th. It will only take half an hour, just so
we can brief everyone about where they are meant to be and what the work
involves.

Thank You!!!!

Henry

Hi Emma, Hows things? well i hope!

I have a favour to ask, i forgot to do my water shift today in the
polytunnel, owing to being very busy down at the station with our fund
raising event -which went v.well :) I aim to come down after work tomorrow
to give the poor plants a drink, however, if u get 10mins and want a break
from the office, would you mind throwing some water over the plants in the
poly tunnel??!

No worries if not, hope to catch up soon,
best wishes, jen x

Eastside Roots Community Garden Hub needs your help!!!!

This Sunday at Stapelton Road train Station we have our first Community Harvest Fayre (hopefully you saw the last email with all the exciting entertainment listed but if not feel free to email & I will send you the flyer). We were hoping to get loads done tomorrow up at the Station as we had a corporate team building day, however they have cancelled at the eleventh hour so:

Wednesday 27th August: Volunteer Day & Evening- all welcome.
Please join us for an hour or the day! I will be up there from 9.30am to 5pm. Wear old clothes & bring waterproofs incase.
Instead of the last 'That'll Learn You' skill swap we will be having a work night from 6.30 until it gets dark....free soup & refreshments! Sorry to those that were looking forward to clothing repairs/alterations. Feel free to bring any unwanted clothing up with you so we can still do the clothes swap part.

Thursday 28th August: Volunteer evening - all welcome.
Please join us from 6.30 til dark. Refreshments will be available.

Friday 29th August: Volunteer Day
9.30am to 5.30pm - last chance to make the station look fabulous for the Harvest fayre - again if you can spare an hour OR all day please lend a hand.

Saturday 30th August
The Eastside Roots core team will be preparing food for the cafe all day. If anyone can spare an hour or so to give out flyers along St Mark's Road or Stapelton Road please call Nick on 07810 806 354.

Sunday 31st August : Eastside Roots Community Harvest Fayre - 12-8.30pm
We still have a few stall places left & we still need one or two more volunteers to help with cafe / stall / bike smoothie maker. Please email me or call me if you fancy giving up two hours over the afternoon to help out.

I look forward to celebrating the start of harvest time with you this Sunday - and if you have time perhaps Ill see you before that.
Cross fingers for sunshine.

Eat the Change: a week of local organic food, free from plastic packaging
6 – 21 September 2008

Join us for a week of eating only local organic food, free from plastic packaging to demonstrate to Government that urgent action is needed to transform our food system.
Most of us would love to eat more locally grown food that is good for us and the environment. But how many of us feel we could actually do it in our current globalised food system?

Between Saturday 6th and Sunday 21st September, during Organic food Fortnight - when food is at its most abundant in the UK – join us for one week eating only food from the following sources:
* Organic food, grown and produced in the UK – free from plastic packaging
* Foraged food – free food growing wild and abundantly all over the UK
* Home grown food – food you, your friends or family have grown.
Take Action!
1) Sign up to our pledge at www.pledgebank. com/eatthechange - please still sign up even though we have already reached our target – we need as many people signed up as possible to make an impact
2) Visit www.eatthechange. org for more information and advice, to share your experiences during the week and to find out how to highlight to Government that urgent action is needed to transform our food system.
3) Forward this email far and wide

A showing of The Power of Community: How Cuba Survived Peak Oil

followed by a talk by the noted Cuban biologist and permaculturist ROBERTO PEREZ who is featured in the film.

Tuesday September 16th - 7.30 p.m. The Cube Microplex, Kings Square, Kingsdown, Bristol £4/£3

When Cuba lost access to Soviet oil, fertilizers and export trade market in the early 1990s, the country faced virtual overnight economic collapse and an immediate crisis - feeding the population. The story of the Cuban people's hardship, ingenuity and triumph over sudden adversity - through cooperation, conservation and community - to create a low energy society is inspirational. Cuba's transition to organic agriculture and rapid relocalisation based on decentralised health care and higher education, bicycles and public transport, and community response to radical change is both thought provoking and empowering. http://www.powerofc ommunity. org

Roberto Perez, who has recently completed a hugely popular speaking tour of Australia and New Zealand is currently touring Britain and will provide a rare opportunity to hear about the Cuban experience first hand. The film will be followed by discussion of practical ways we can meet the challenges of climate change and make the transition to a low energy society.

For venue details and advance tickets see http://microplex. cubecinema. com/cubewebsite/
It is advisable to book in advance if possible.
This event is brought to you by Bristol Cuba Solidarity, Bristol Green Parties and Bristol Permaculture Group.

If weather is like this we will meet at station at 6.30pm as normal but move to the Moroccan on the corner just down from station (call me if you have problems: 07810 806 354). As such there will be NO soup tonight (unless weather clears up but forecast is bad). Please join us! Next week Joe & I will be giving you a basic introduction to Permaculture (at station as normal).

This weekends Living Roof & Herb Spiral practical is full.

Harvest Fayre: We are putting the last touches to the exciting program of activities for our Community Harvest Fayre on 31st August from 12 to 8pm. If you want to perform, play music, give a talk or workshop or have a stall please email or call me by 17th August. If you wish to help set the site up or help run the cafe or give out information on the day please contact me by 25th August. We will be distributing posters this week - if you can help by putting a poster in your window or putting some in your local shop, bar, place of worship, gym etc please let me know - I can send electronic or paper copy.

Finally - we need your old carpets & guttering! If you have an old copy in the shed/garage or guttering making your garden messy please call or email THIS WEEK & I can pick up on Friday. Carpets are needed for the living roof.

warm wishes

Dear All
The Willow weaving workshop tonight has been postponed until August due to weather. We are back next week with a talk by Tom Redfern from the Avon Wood Cooperative about Timber Framing and the following Wednesday we have Claire Milne from Bristol Food Hub presenting 'The Good, the Bad & the Unpalatable' local to global food talk. I am pleased to confirm that the last Wednesday in July we will be running a papermaking workshop. So please fill in your diaries and join us at Stapelton Road train Station from 6.30/7 (for Soup/talk) to 8.30 for our 'That'll Learn You' skill swap nights. We are currently organising our August program so please get in touch if you have suggestions or wish to give a talk/workshop yourself.

Dont forget our volunteer days are Thursdays 12 to 5 at Trinity Community Arts Centre garden and Tuesday, Wednesday & Fridays at Stapelton Road Train Station site from 10.30 to 5 - all welcome, refreshments and training available. Please contact me if you wish to help run these volunteer days.

Eastside Roots will be running a 'green roof' practical course and an 'Introduction to Permaculture' course (tutor Sarah Pugh) shortly please contact me for more details.

Finally we are planning a Harvest Fayre at Stapelton Road Train Station site from 12 to 8.30 on 31st August. please contact me if you wish to have a stall, perform on the day or run a workshop. Also if you wish to help out generally or have any ideas for the day we are holding an open meeting 6.30 to 8.30 on 4th August - venue to be confirmed.

Bristol and the UK? Concerned that buying local food is at the expense of poor country farmers? Join us for a myth-busting evening and find out what you can do. Claire Milne is a great speaker so this is sure to be an very exciting talk and workshop.. 6.30 for soup for donations / 7 for talk / finish by 8.30.

30th July - 'That'll Learn You' Skill Share Night: 'Paper making Workshop' by Laura from Magic Carpet. Making attractive paper for gift tags, cards, letter writing paper etc from scraps & threads/petals/dried flowers etc. Donations for materials please. 6.30 for soup / 7 for workshop / 8.30 finish.

31st July - Work Night at the Station 5-8.30pm. Making raised beds, mulching plants, weeding slope, watering & much more. Bring food to share & wear old clothes.

August:

Eastside Roots have been asked to create a temporary garden in Queen's Square as part of the Harbourside Festival. If you are interested we are having a short brainstorming meeting in Queen's square on Tuesday 22nd July at 1.30pm (meet at statute in centre of the square) or if you cant make that just email me or call on 07810 806 354. We need ideas, plants, materials, poles, soil, imagination, artwork, flag making, mandala made from natural materials etc. We are creating the garden on 1st August (please help if you are free) and running an information stall on Saturday & Sunday 2nd/3rd August under the banner 'Garden of Easton' - if you can run the stall for an hour or two over the weekend we can pay you in plants and praise! 300,000 people are expected to attend the festival so this is a marvelous way to promote gardening/permaculture/growing your own food to a wide audience & a chance to celebrate the great projects happening in Easton.

That'll Learn You Nights will run every Wednesday throughout August - we have one spot left if anyone wishes to run a gardening/green/sustainable activity. The nights are 6.30 to 8.30. Full program will be advertised soon - watch this space. We will be stopping these nights in September but dont forget every Tuesday there are skill share events held at Cafe Midnimo, organised by The Free Economy - see www.justfortheloveofit.org, running throughout the year with lots of exciting topics.

Introduction to Permaculture Course
We are delighted to inform you that Sarah 'Queen of Permaculture' Pugh is running a Intro to Permaculture course, 7 to 9.30, Tuesday nights from 12th August to 2nd September. Eastside Roots evolved from the Bristol Permaculture Group so we want to give our volunteers/members/local community a chance to find out about this fascinating, practical subject - so we are subsidizing the course which is just £40! You will not find it cheaper. To book a place contact me ASAP - this will fill very quickly! The course will be followed by two practical sessions.

16th/17th August - Green Roof / Herb Spiral / Water Harvesting Weekend 11am to 5pm
Book now for an exciting weekend of practical activities. We will be creating a green roof for our timber framed shelter, creating a herb spiral and setting up a rainwater harvesting system. There will be handouts for you to take away, free refreshments and lots of fun. We are charging £5 per place, to pay for the plants, and are taking bookings now.

30th/31st August - Stapelton Road Street Party & Eastside Roots Community Harvest Fayre: Both Free!
Easton will be even more vibrant & exciting than normal over the last weekend in August. Stapelton Road Street Party on Saturday and Eastside Roots Harvest fayre from 12 to 8pm on Sunday. Its like a mini festival but you get to sleep in your own bed!
If you came to our Spring fayre you know what to expect - if you didnt you can see what you missed. We are currently booking an exciting array of bands, talks, workshops, children's activities, arts & craft stalls & much, much more. If you want to get involved with the planning, or perform/have a stall on the day or if you want to help run the cafe please get in touch - this is your Community Fayre be part of it!

Finally - help needed:
We still really need volunteers for both our sites, volunteer coordinators for both our sites, plants/seeds/wood/artwork/materials and  people willing to be part of a watering rota. I also would love help with admin - if you are between jobs or have time to spare and would be interested in volunteer recruitment, designing posters, contacting partner organisations, talking to our local schools or buinesses, helping prepare funding bids...the list goes on...then please get in touch. This is your Community Garden Hub - please get involved and help make the Eastside of Bristol an even better place to live, work & play.
Oh yes - and we need drain pipes & guttering! Any cluttering up your shed, garage, garden?

EASTSIDE ROOTS NEEDS YOU!

Thanks for your time. See you soon.

**Apologies for any cross posting** Please circualte far and wide ...

Just a wee reminder about the food meetings on Mon and Wed next week - see below for more info and reply to this email to register, stating which day you would like to attend.

Bristol's Week of Harvest Celebrations - creative planning sessions

Monday 14 July 7 - 9.30pm, Hamilton House, Stokes Croft, St Pauls, BS1 3QY
Wednesday 16 July 3 - 5.30pm, Bordeaux Quay, V Shed, Canons Way BS1 5UH

Join Transition Bristol to plan a Week of Harvest Celebrations to celebrate Bristol's abundance of local food at harvest time and to raise awareness of the need to re-localise our food and the havoc our current globalized food system is wreaking on the health and wellbeing of our communities and the environment.

These sessions are aimed at all Bristol organisations and communities with an interest in food. Sessions will start with an outline on what's happening to transform food in Bristol, leading to open space sessions to brainstorm and plan a range of harvest events across the city. The daytime meeting is aimed at those attending as part of their work and the evening meeting is aimed at those involved in a volunteer/grassroots capacity, although all are welcome to whichever meeting is most convenient.

Bristol's Week of Harvest Celebrations will take place in October to coincide with World Food Day on 16 October and National Apple Day on 21 October. The week of action builds on 'Berries 'n Beans: Bristol's Week of Seasonal Food Celebrations (see below)

Please reply to this email
to register - stating which event you will be attending.

Berries 'n Beans: Bristol's Week of Seasonal Food Celebrations, June 3 - 10 2008
Set against the backdrop of soaring world food prices, early June saw world leaders come together in Rome to discuss the pressing issues of world food security and the challenges of climate change and bioenergy. Frustratingly the world summit failed to make any decisions of real significance - other than to further hamper food sovreignty in developing countries by failing to curb subsidies for biofuels.

Meanwhile communities across Bristol came together in solidarity with communities across the world, to celebrate what the seasons currently have to offer us - an abundance of strawberries and broad beans!

Some 15 events took place across the city, with Eastside Roots at Stapleton Road Train Staion in Easton running a particularly fantastic array of events including a wild food walk, film showings and talks and Smoothie Moves - a bicycle powered smoothie breakfast for school children and commuters.

Subject: Beautiful woodland in Bristol is under threat

Message from Adele (from Save the Path Campaign)

Hi everyone,

I wanted to let you know about the threat to one of Bristol's
little-known, natural treasures. It is called Grove Wood (and has
recently had a sign at the entrance calling it 'Icon Park'). It is
located on the opposite side of the river to the much more well-known
Snuff Mills.

If you have ever been there, you will know that it is a beautiful,
relatively undisturbed, mixed broadleaf woodland on the side of a
valley which slopes down to the river.

I had assumed that it was owned by Bristol City Council as it is
inconceivable that it might not be a protected area. Not so. As you
will see from the email below (which was sent out on the Railway Path
group), this lovely area has been bought by a developer and is now
threatened - there has already been a significant area of trees
cleared from the entrance.

Please take the time to sign the e-petition - if you do not know the
area, contact me as I would be happy to organise a walk there from
Eastville Park. You should see what you've been missing out on!

Best wishes
Adele

Hello all
sorry to hijack the railway path for a non railway path issue, but I
thought many on the list might be interested in this - I have copied
this (mostly) from a mail I received today
thanks
John

It appears that the side of the valley opposite Snuff Mills in Vassals
/ Oldbury Court park (UWEs Glenside campus / Blackberry Hill hospital
back onto this valley) has now been bought by a dubious property
developer with plans to turn an ancient woodland in to a hotel and
deer park. He's also proposing lots of other dubious activities
including paintballing.

Yet this particular woodland is a haven for bats, owls and is used by
otters and kingfishers.

Snuff Mills Action Group has been set up to help protect the area and
we have launched an epetition to campaign for Bristol City Council to
buy the site. It would be really helpful if you could sign this
petition at the link here:

http://epetitions. bristol.gov. uk/signatures

You don't have to live in Bristol to sign the petition, or even the UK.

If you could pass this email on to anyone else you think would be
interested, that would be great too.

You can find out more about Snuff Mills and our campaigns at our blog
here:

Double booked...Cover needed for trinity garden on 17th July.

I feel really bad about this, I thought I would have finished my
Blackberry hill hospital job by the 17th, but my notice finishes that
week, in fact the 17th will be my last day!

Anyway, I put my self down to do this day and now cant, I will do my best
to find suitable cover to coordinate or will leave a sign down there to
say its cancelled. However, if anyone else can do it instead or knows
someone suitable that would be best. If you have any ideas who then please
let them and me Know. If its a 'newbie' then they will need to go and
learn the ropes this Thursday!

I will endeavour to make this up next month and to fit in more coordinating.
Hope you are staying dry this wet weekend,

Love Jen x
