DATE CORRECTION: LA PALMA WEEK 16-23 JUNE 2006

Murrough Landon and I are once again organising a week in the Canaries.  The event, this time will be in La Palma , an island neighbouring La Gomera which is unspoiled and spectacular.  With mountains reaching 2,426m at Roque de los Muchachos, the site of a world famous observatory due to the lack of light and other pollution, and dominated by the Caldera de Taburiente.  A chain of more recently extinct volcanoes stretches to the south of the island. Around the mountains the island is green and lush, with canary pines along the high ground and some laurisilva forest in the north of the island. The weather in June (though unpredictable) is likely to be sunny and warm but not too hot - 22 degrees - average daily temperature.  Our friend Ricardo from La Gomera will once again act as our guide and adviser on the extensive flora and fauna.

We have booked exclusive use of Bungalows Sonvida in sunny west, of the island.  This complex of 6 bungalows with swimming pool and tennis court is very private and away from roads and has lovely views of the mountains and sea – my photos.  We will have a maximum of 22 places in the bungalows. An additional bungalow, five minutes away, might suit a couple who wanted a bit more privacy.

Whilst the emphasis of the week will once again be on walking, the larger size of group means that we are likely to be able to organise shorter walks or other sightseeing trips, particularly on two days when the main walk will require real stamina.  There is a sandy nudist beach around 4 kilometres away.  Highlights of the walking will include the Ruta de los Volcans along the Cumbre Vieja – across a series of extinct volcanos (some were active in 1948) and the Los Tilos walk which includes walking along beside a water channel and through tunnels.

Cost will be around £270including accommodation, half the evening meals, food kitty for picnic lunches and car hire.  Once again, this will not be an official ECC week but will run on similar lines.  Flights to Tenerife Sur cost around £180 and there will be an additional cost of around £30 for the internal flight to La Palma.
