If you cannot find one John, consider the (easily reversible) mod that I have described in several of my restoration articles on the EUG site to replace this rare (and in my opinion unsafe) connector with a modern (IEC) type that you can obtain free from things like old computer psu’s – you can then use any 3-way mains cable having an IEC connector on one end.

Great Buy Terry

One sold for Ł395 on e bay recently although it did have the plinth and internals speaker with it. Let us know if you need to do any restoration work on it. Gerry O’Hara VE7GUH has two articles on restoring the 940 on our website.

Al,

The dial glass should be "glass", not perspex and should be about 3/16ths inch thick.
The glass should be retained at the bottom by the "lip" on the scale plate and by the top retainer which is adjustable by means of the small screws which you can see at the top of the front casting (the top retainer is white and also carries the scale lights)
Check the glass is the correct size: it is important that it is retained correctly otherwise it  can move in towards the scale plate and trap the cursor.

The cursor on this model should be a thin perspex strip with red lines scribed on both sides (this forms a parallax correction device). This should be fixed to the carrier by two small screws.

Check the cursor carrier is not bent/damaged and that the two carrier bars are straight

Al, I have spares for all the above parts if you need them (including glass but you can obviously source that locally): email me saparately if I can help.

Ian M0ECQ

I'm making good progress on my 830-7 project. I've replaced the damaged dial scales. Thanks Ian. Now I'm having trouble reassembling the thing. Can someone verify the proper thickness of the dial glass. My set has a piece of 1/4" Plexiglass (Perspex?) that seems to me to be overly thick causing clearance problems for the dial cursor.

Thanks,
Al

I have uploaded some photos to the forum of the S750 I restored for the Society for the Preservation of Antique Radio in Canada (‘SPARC’) earlier this year.  One of these photos shows the serial number plate and label identifying it is a 25Hz mains transformer model (it has a type 3739/IP mains transformer installed).  Note that the model is noted on the serial number plate as ‘S750’ (not ‘S750/1’ or ‘S750/2’).  The case on this set, along with its playmate speaker and S-meter have all been re-finished in black wrinkle-finish powder coat – hence the ‘factory fresh’ appearance.  Nice eh?

I am trying to establish the difference between the S750/1 and S750/2. The /2 was supposed to be badged as the Marconi HR100 for an EUGer. We have an instruction leaflet for the S750 on the webste but cant be sure what the differences may be, if any. If anyone has a copy of the HR100 manual that they can scan for us it would be appreciated. Unfortunately we dont seem to have any S750 manuals in our hardcopy archive.

I note that the Marconi HR100 Data Sheet (aka S750/2 according to the QRG) has
recently been posted to the EUG site confirming that this model has the standard
110/240v 40 - 60Hz mains tansformer.

Hi Graeme,

According to the QRG, the 750/1 is the designation that the 110v 25Hz transformer variant was given.  I restored a 750 fitted with a 110v 25Hz power transformer (type 3937/IP) for the SPARC museum here in Coquitlam earlier this year (article posted to the EUG website).  That particular set was donated from someone in Ontario, which had the 25Hz power system back in the 1950's.  However. I did not check the Serial Number Plate to note the model number as it had been removed from the case (yes, it was not fitted to the chassis), for the case to be re-finished.  The set is now fully restored, case Serial Number Plate and all, so I will check the next time I visit the museum.

My understanding, again from the QRG, is that the Marconi HR100 is equivalent to the 750/2.  This variant was apparently supplied to ‘coastal stations’ (presumably in the UK?) – if so it would likely have been fitted with a standard mains transformer.

Hello. Im new to the group. Earl VE3AB. I joined because I was given a box of Eddystone Receiver parts by a ham op here in Ontario who was cleaning out his basement. I did try some searching on the web and have not been able to identify this radio. It does not seem to have a model number on its parts BUT I have created a PHOTO ALBUM under my callsign VE3AB. To me, it looks like a mobile or portable radio. The digital readout module is in the pics. I think I have a VFO module sans the vfo chip as well. I may well be selling these parts off because I have other recievers and radios which I have to work on and have not enough time to reconstruct this one. Any ideas? Im sure someone in this group will probably know. Cheers es 73 Earl VE3AB

Why NOT use coax ?

The primary of the first RF transformer in the 680 can be operated balanced or
unbalanced as preferred, by grounding (or not)the "AE" terminal. The coax screen
also goes to this one. The inner conductor goes to "A". It may actually be
better to leave AE ungrounded, as this will remove a potential hum loop - try it
and see.

The 400 ohms impedance is no problem - a close match isn't mandatory. To quote
from the handbook "The input impedance at the aerial terminals is nominally 400
ohms, but good results are obtainable with aerials of widely varying impedance".
My 680X is actually a special made for the British Post Office, and it has a 75
ohm coax connector instead of the A and AE terminals. As far as I can see, it
still uses the regular first stage input transformers - so no problems in
substituting an unbalanced coax input.

Pete,

I would reiterate Gerry's comments here: I use a weak solution of dishwasher fluid in warm distilled water to clean the scales. You may find that there are nicotine stains which leave a sticky brown deposit. This will come off if you wash and rewash several times. Use a gentle side to side cleaning movement ie do not scrub.
This is definitely a case in which patience is a virtue!!

I would urge that you do not under any circumstances use abrasive materials or solvents unless you have proved that the scale is resistant to these by testing a non visible area first ( a good place to test is the part number which is often to be found on the side of the scale and which is out of view when installed).

Please note that replacement scales for these receivers are not available as spares from me, (although I do have limited numbers of new scales for some other models)

Pete,

Well, that certainly made a difference to that vernier scale! – much improved.

In other cases though, I would reiterate that caution should still be used when trying ‘Autoglym’ or any other cleaner/polish/abrasive or solvent/detergent (including soapy water) on a receiver scale, trying it first on a non-visible area.  Remember that the scale is the part of the radio that you look at the most and that you need to be able to set/read the frequency – in my view a dirty or discoloured scale is better than no scale…

Hi

Regarding the different shades of dial colours, I have a 680X where the
main dial is a pale cream colour as is the "Model 680X" ident. The fine
tuning dial and meter scale appear white. At the very least this assumes
different paints were used though perhaps they started life a similar
colour but with different responses to fading.

Pete,

I would recommend caution when attempting to clean a scale plate or vernier dial (on both Eddystone and non-Eddystone sets).  The printing process/inks used vary quite a lot (some water-soluble, some alcohol soluble, some showing distress to the lettering afterwards that was not visible during cleaning, etc) – I have had a few bad experiences over the years even being cautious!  As a first attempt I tend to use cotton wool and a very weak solution of washing-up detergent in lukewarm water, applied swiftly and then dried quickly – try this on a part of the scale plate that does not matter too much and make sure no adverse effects manifest themselves before working on a visible part of the scale plate.

Hi Bob

I haven't cleaned the dial on my 730, as it was in good order.
However my Mimco version of the 670A (R2232A) was in a really filthy state, including the logging dial.

These I cleaned with a resin car polish - Autoglym - and they came up very nicely. This stuff is slightly abrasive & too much pressure will damage the lettering.

I've used this proceedure on two logging dials & one tuning dial without cusing any loss of letting.

Eddystone Cabinet Painting

Unfortunately Ernie of Stoverite retired this month and last time I spoke to him he was unsure if the company would continue or not. I see him every month at the local classic Jaguar club. Ernie re-painted some of my mkII type cabinets for old times sake but told me it was not an economic job.

Hi Bob

I haven't cleaned the dial on my 730, as it was in good order.
However my Mimco version of the 670A (R2232A) was in a really filthy state,
including the logging dial.

These I cleaned with a resin car polish - Autoglym - and they came up very
nicely. This stuff is slightly abrasive & too much pressure will damage the
lettering.

I've used this proceedure on two logging dials & one tuning dial without cusing
any loss of letting.

Regards
Pete

I did indeed have some done.  A company in Gateshead called Stovrite did them for me.  I haven’t been in for some time but ask for a chap called Ernie who will remember me and might be able to help.

I believe their number is 0191-438 6612 as they have no website.

I hope this helps.

Simon

I'm hoping to restore an 870A, have brand new fingerplate, knobs & scale, so wonder whether anyone has had any cases re-enameled lately & a good job done ? Loathe to use the aerosol can method ! Seem to recall Simon had some done a few years back.

Does anyone have either of the following xtals:

or
 Channel 327 and/or 329
in the FT241 types used in the BC-604/684 sets.

Bored in the evenings? Receiver broken? In a hotel room miles from your favourite Eddystone and getting withdrawal symptoms?, well, how about a video (quite a long one) of someone playing with an S640?  Click on this for instant relief:

There is also one on the Eddystone Bugkey. Just google Youtube Eddystone bug key
and you should find it.

Thanks to Gerry for finding these gems.
