One way to get the cabinet off the MkII style receivers if all else fails
is to release the rear screws by an eighth of an inch and carefully tap each
of the four in turn and evenly with a hammer until you see that there is
movement. Do not tap too hard and make sure you tap evenly. As there is movement
unscrew each of the screws a little more.

When putting it back together use some vaseline on the contact surface around
the casting and obtain four small rubber chenistry flask bungs of a suitable
size. With the receiver face down place each of these adjacent to the fixing
screw holes and carefullly slide on the cabinet. As you tighten the screws
down you will compress these rubber bungs so that the cabinet is always under
tension. Next time you have to remove it it will be a lot easier. It has
worked for me for 35 years after getting black and blue hadns using the official
Eddystone method.

I find that using a screwdriver on the slots on the underside damages the
casting paint and burs the edge of the cabinet no matter how carefully you
do it.

Best

Another method I have used to remove the cases on the MkII style receivers
if fitted with a plinth speaker is to sit on the floor bracing my stocking
feet against the front of the speaker and pulling hard on the chrome handles
wriggle the pulling force from side to side, eg from handle to handle. If
not fitted with a speaker plinth you could make up a suitable assembly out
of wood and screw it to the underside of the receiver. Provided of course
the 840 has holes for a plinth. Never had one so don't know.

Hi, could one of you experts give me some more good advice please?

I managed to prise open my case thanks to your last good advice and
now have the receiver apart on my lounge/workshop floor.

I took some photographs and have uploaded them to the group Photos
section under my name.

Could you have a look and advise me on what maintenance work I should
do before I put it back together again please? I have already used
Servisol on the pots and wafer and other switches and valve sockets.
What about replacing or testing any caps or other items that I should
consider?

I want to move the mains socket installed by a previous owner over a
millimetre to allow the mains plug to fit better as it is a very tight
squeeze at the moment. This should be straightforward.

I want to fit a PL259 aerial input socket instead of the 3mm banana
plug sockets. There are two aerial sockets, one for unbalanced and
one for balanced and I think there should be a shorting plug but that
is missing. Which aerial socket should I connect the PL259 socket
centre to?

Am I going mad - the manual and circuit diagram talk about 8 valves
but I can only find 7! Where is the missing valve.....?

Is there any way I could have a better tune of the 7 - 7.1 MHz amateur
band? Could I fit a bandspread variable capacitor (air-spaced or
varicap)?

Cheers and 73s

Following a careful complete re-alignment of the IF and front-end, it
now much healthier!
Just one cautionary comment may be of value: (those "in the know" can
ignore this).
You have to be careful (especially on the highest freq. band) to make
sure that you are calibrating the LO to the signal req'd. and not its
image. The LO tracks on the high-side (all bands), so the image will be
on the high-side - if you've got it right! Unfortunately, there is
sufficient swing on the osc. coil core and its trimmer to erroneously
tune to the image. So - use a good sig. gen. with an acccurate freq.
display and a decent attenuator (I use an HP 8640B). I found that the
correct settings corresponded to the core of the osc. coil in
the "furthest out towards you" position - i.e. NOT tuned to the image.

So, unless anybody had any further contribs. to make to this Thread -
Thread closed.

Virtually all Eddystone Rx's track on the hi side and this can be difficult, as you say.  I find an invaluable aid in alignment to be a 'modern' general coverage digital rx  (I use an HF150) and monitor the LO throughout alignment.     73,  Graeme  G3GGL

Hi, did the 840C have dial lights?

Just wondering because my one doesn't.

Does anyone know of a source of good aerial plugs? I think they are
3mm banana/wander plugs.

I have just received a fairly OK looking EB35MK111 (SN 0040) which I
was ensured worked fine. Unfortunately there are at least two faults
(or maybe they are connected). The audio is distorted and the set
doesn't seem to be very sensitive on the FM band - the only one I've
tried so far.

When I press the AFC switch the signal is detuned and I have to turn
the tuning control to re-tune it. I guess this isn't normal.

The dial lamps aren't working but I think that is an easy one!

Does anyone have any ideas/suggestions about this set?

Hello everybody,

The Eddystone 670C (and 840C) never had dial lamps.  The reason was the risk of a short from the wiring to the adjacent pointer rails.
Unfortunately Maplin dropped the 3mm (Eddystone aerial socket size) from their catalogue a couple of years ago.  The only source seems to be oddments boxes on rally stalls.

Hello,

Re 3mm plugs. Has anyone considered using split pins instead. I use these on my AVO CT160 valve tester and after soldering wire to the loop you can cover the non contact area with heat shrink tubing. They are avaialbel in many diameters and lenths and work fine for me. You can add a pit of spring to the contact by flexing the pin sides out.

Separately I wanted to ask Graeme if you can use the digital reciever trick when aligning second mixer/local osc cores. Is there the range on second local osc adjustment to make similar errors as on first local osc?

Hello Mike,

Are you talking about the model 750?
Yes, you can use the same system to align the second LO.  The system is, of course, quite different from a single conversion set, but when you are setting the LO to 85kc/s above or below the first IF of 1620 kc/s it's quite possible to get in a muddle.
I would recomend the digital Rx to monitor the LO on all bands; so much quicker.  Also I once found a set  (840C, but same for any HF set) with the LO on the low side at 12 megs and on the high side (correctly) at 6 megs.  At 9 megs it was at signal frequency!  Very baffling.

I am now the owner of a green S870. Please see the pictures in the
S870 album in the Photos section of this Yahoo Group website.

Unfortunately it is in a bit of a poor condition, at least,
electronically. I think all the mechanics are OK.

A previous owner removed all the power supply parts and re-wired it.
They also removed the rear Eddystone badge and put different knobs on.

I am looking for all of the valves! 12be6, 12ba6, 12at6, 19aq5, 35w4.
The 35w4 is missing and all the rest have been replaced by their 6.3V
heater equivalents.

The ballast resistor and mains filter are missing.

It may need a new speaker.

Does anyone have any idea of where or who to go to for these parts?

This is my first restoration so, like my S870, I am a bit green.

I am tempted to fit a 240V/110V transformer instead of the ballast
resistor if the ballast resistor isn't available.

Kind regards,

Nick m3vow

I have just purchased a 840c on ebay and I have a few problems to sort
out The main problem is the vernier dial is bent and catching,is it
possible to still get a replacement? the other problem is with the
main tuning control the knob with the flywheel attached can be pulled
out so when tuning there is so much play the control bangs against the
finger plate as you rotate the control if that makes sense, you could
pull the shaft out and tighten the grub screw but then the friction
bearing would be out of alignment with the disc.I am sure I am missing
something here and it is a simple adjustment.

Hello,

Check with Ian Nutt to see if he has any vernier dials in stock
suitable for the 840C (iandcnutt@...). It is possible to
straighten even a badly bent vernier dial (I have done this for three
sets so far), although if it has scraped against the front panel etc
so the markings have worn off it not much use doing this. As for the
tuning knob issue, it is probably the flywheel that needs re-
positioning on the tuning shaft - access the fixing screw through the
hole on the bottom edge of the front panel casting, loosen the screw
and adjust for optimum 'feel' and only a minor amount of end-play and
then re-tighten. For photos of all the parts and how they fit
tobether plus dismantling/re-assembly instructions, check the
restoration articles on the EUG site - although these do not cover the
840C specifically, similar designs were used in many Eddystone sets of
the valve era (check the S.750 one first).

Good luck!

Glad to be able to help. Instructions for dial glass removal are
given on page 4 of the 840C manual (downloadable from the EUG site).
If you need to clean the scale plate (dial) be very careful - I
suggest using a cotton wool ball dampened with lukewarm water with a
couple of drops of detergent dissolved in it. Very gently dab/wipe
away any grime without removing the markings... If the scale plate is
reasonably clean however, leave it alone. Whatever you do though, do
not use any form of solvent such as alcohol as this will very likely
damage the markings. The glass can be cleaned with warm soapy water
and then polished up using a commercial glass cleaner.

Hello All,

As a new member I thought I'd introduce myself. I found the EUG
website a couple of days ago and have been returning to it ever
since. I only have one Eddystone - well more accurately about 7/8ths
of a 670 - which is missing all the power supply bits and the case.
The EUG site has spurred my interest in getting it going again. My
intention is to build a conventional transformer supply onto the
chassis to replace the missing dropper/rectifier combination. No idea
about the case yet.

Regards

Lou.

Hi Lou,

Welcome to the group. It's a bit quiet here and a lot of questions go
unanswered but sometimes you strike gold!

I have a 670 with no PSU parts too. I bought a nice small 0-55 0-55
torroid from Farnell which I mounted in my 870 after bending the metal
dropper ballast resistor shelf down and drilling a hole in it for the
torroid mount bolt. I used one of the 0-55 outputs to power the
heaters in series (five 12V valve heaters) and connected the two
outputs together (110V) to provide the HT. I used the original valve
diode and caps and filter choke. You can also use a modern silicon
bridge and capacitor.

Fortunately mine had the case although someone had practiced their
paintin on it so I need to bring it back to the original colour.

There's an Ian Nutt (iandcnutt@...) on here sometimes who has some
original factory spares such as knobs.

Good luck!

Hi Nick,

Thanks for the good advice. Mine's missing the ballast shelf although
in some models I think the ballast was bolted to the side of the case
just behind the speaker. In any case I fashioned a plate to sit over
the gaping hole that the original choke etc occupied. You know I
didn't even think about a toroidal transformer. I was going to rewind
a small 60VA low volts job to suit. It's not original but I doubt
suitable original parts will ever turn up so this will have to do.

I'm in a bit more trouble with the case obviously. Not sure about
that one yet. I imagine that somewhere in the world there is a place
where all the missing radio cases and odd socks go to hide.

Lou.
