Hi Russ,

I'm guessing you are referring to your PC DVD drive? If so, there are
often "hacked" or "cracked" firmwares that allow a drive to remain
region free permanently. It's also important to note that region
encoding is something that software will also pick up, and possibly
block, even if the drive is made region-free. There are software
applications that get around that as well.

As far as stand-alone DVD players, I'd recommend Apex as a brand, as
they often allow, by design, their players to become region free too.
