A big thank you to all who turned up. You are a stimulating audience.

And a very big thank you to the SkillsMatter team who afforded us the
time, space and facilities to conduct the presentation.

If you have further questions please get in touch on the list. I
managed to chat with some of you afterwards, but with so many of you
and so little time I couldn't talk with every one of you.

I propose to follow up by putting my code where my mouth is. I'll
create a GoogleCode or SourceForge project containing T-Build, a PDF
of my talk note and documentation, and a few applications chosen from
the Jungerl repository, possibly elsewhere. Get in touch, let me know
if there are things you would like to see included.

Best wishes. Hope to see you all again soon at another Erlang-London
User Group meeting.

Peter Mander.

Hi Al & Peter,

thanks for the feedback. We are all learning as we go along. Here is a
suggestion for the second meeting:

* Depending on how many people sign up, we use a meeting room we can
stay in after the talk.
* On the 28th, we will be ordering Pizza and drinks so people can stay on.
* As for the meeting times, we have in the past been have asked to
schedule them later because of work commitments. On the 28th, Thomas is
flying in from Sweden, so he can not be there earlier. But we can try to
have the February one at 6.30 pm, and take it from there.

Another response I got privately was from someone who wanted to use the
meeting to Learn Erlang and go through Joe's book chapter by chapter.
(They has similar study circles in Utah and North Carolina). I am not
sure this is the aim of the User Group, but it is certainly something we
would support of there is need.

Also, we need speakers. PLEASE VOLUNTEER!

Regards,
Francesco

Feel free to pass this on to anyone you believe might be interested.

The second meet up of the Erlang User Group will be at Erlang Training
and Consulting's offices in London and feature a presentation from
Thomas Arts, of the IT University of Gothenburg. He will talk about
testing large Erlang based systems, including formal methods and
property based testing.

The presentation will be followed by Pizza and drinks. Those still
standing at 8pm can then make their way to a quiet pub down the road and
continue chatting and networking. This is a free event sponsored by
Erlang Training and Consulting and Skills Matter.

As we need to let security have your names and need in advance, so we
can ensure we have a room big enough, and most important, know how much
Pizza to order, you have to register by sending an email to alison _at_
erlang-consulting.com The event is free and open to every one, as long
as you have registered.

Abstract: How do you test large systems written in Erlang?

With the growth of software complexity we need new technology to ensure
quality of the final product. Testing has so far been one of the most
used techniques to check the quality of the end product. Since the
amount of software configurations is huge for each product, testing all
these configurations is impractical. Mathematical techniques under the
name of formal methods, address this by tools as Model Checkers and
Theorem Provers. Several of these techniques have been developed for
Erlang as well as for many other languages.
In practice, they are difficult to use and expensive to deploy.

Property Based Testing joins the benefits of the formal verification
techniques with the ease of testing. Instead of writing test cases, one
copies the idea of formal methods to write a property of the software,
e.g., "no matter how many ATMs are connected to our bank and no matter
in which order the ATMs send their messages, money may not dissapear
from the system". Instead of a mathematical prove that this holds, a
large amount of test cases is automatically generated from this property
and all these tests are checked against the system.

Property Based Testing is used small scale today at companies like
Ericsson, Erlang Training and Consulting and a few others. The goal of
the ProTest project is to introduce more tools and techniques that
enable widened use of Property Based Testing. For example by combining
it with re-factoring of test cases and properties, by connecting it to
trace analysis and audit logs, and by integrating it with model checking
techniques.

This will result in a very powerful method supported by a good set of
integrated tools that make Erlang programmers even more productive.

Bio: Thomas Arts

Dr Thomas Arts is Associate professor at the IT University of Göteborg
in the area of Software Engineering and Management. Thomas is also
co-founder and CTO of Quviq, a small company that produced Quick Check,
a testing tool for Erlang. He holds a PhD in computer science and has
after his PhD been employed at the Ericsson Computer Science Lab (Where
they invented Erlang) where he worked on program verification and the
development of the Erlang programming language.

He has worked in the broad spectrum theoretical computer science, formal
methods and industrial case-study research, mainly applying all kind of
techniques to systems written in Erlang. He has more than 30
publications in journals and refereed conferences/workshops. He has
successfully introduced some new technologies in industry. The latest
technology, QuickCheck, is a tool for property based testing and aims to
support test driven development.

Good idea it was very noisy and took ages to get a drink

Possible as long as numbers aren't to high, Haskell especially not so
interested in the others.

Overall I thought is was a great evening and am looking forward to the

Hi Francesco,

> Should we try to find a quiet pub where we can have our ErlLounges and
> continue socializing / networking after the presentations?

That's a given! Lots of specific questions were asked during the
SkillsMatter presentation, and as we left the building we seemed to
have lost a few on the way to the Erlounge afterwards. And the chosen
pub was too busy to hold detailed conversations. Some of us were
brave/foolhardy enough to endure the cold outside to discuss without
raising our voices. I think a lot of attendees didn't get answers to
their questions.

> Should we meet even if we have no speakers?

The networking can help some who are keen to join teams where Erlang
is an accepted technology, and to help those looking for recruits. It
worked for me. Introducing new technology that management hasn't
chosen themselves can be a disheartening struggle.

> How about having joint sessions with the Ruby / Haskell / Scheme (and
> other) User Groups?

Definitely. We can steal some of their ideas! And vice-versa of course.

> Would you be interested in Tutorials in open source tools / other
> aspects of Erlang?

I can present the build system I use to deploy Erlang based services
at a big mobile phone telco. Would this interest anyone?

Pete.

Hi All,

Hope you had a good break and that the return to work was not than
painful. The kickoff of the User Group was more than what I would have
expected. 60 people showed up at the Erlang for 5-nines presentation,
many more than what any of us had anticipated. We are in the process of
finalizing the dates and subject for our next speaker, so expect an
email fairly shortly. As we expect many speakers to be from overseas, it
will be hard to have a fixed date when we meet every month. We will
instead have to try and catch them as best as we can.

My reason for writing this email is to ask how you want to form and
shape the London User Group. We have many ideas, but are also interested
in hearing yours. Here are some questions to jump start the discussions.

Is a meeting a month too much?
Should we try to find a quiet pub where we can have our ErlLounges and
continue socializing / networking after the presentations?
Should we meet even if we have no speakers?
How about having joint sessions with the Ruby / Haskell / Scheme (and
other) User Groups?
What is the best time to meet?
Would you be interested in Tutorials in open source tools / other
aspects of Erlang?

These are just some ideas. Make yourself heard, and let us know what you
think so we can turn these meetings into something everyone finds useful.

Also, if you know of colleagues and friends who might be interested in
joining this group, give them a nudge and get them to sign up at
http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/erlang-london/

Best regards,
Francesco Cesarini

Hi Al,

I will be there, presenting.. So that makes two of us; good to know I
will not be alone :-) Seriously speaking, this is a great opportunity to
raise Erlang's profile in the city and formalize the activities we at
Erlang Training and Consulting have been having on and off in the past
two years. The presentation I plan on holding is a perfect introduction
to Erlang, providing an overview of where we are today. Invite anyone
who has expressed interested.

We are also hoping that this group becomes a forum for London Erlangers
and can be used to announce local events, offloading the Erlang mailing
list. There was a time where everyone on the Erlang-questions Mailing
List knew each other personally. Now that it has grown so much,
hopefully this forum will take its place.

Last but not least, we are looking for speakers... So email me with
suggestions on talks so we can make these meetings a monthly occurrence.

Francesco
