Dear Erlang London Group,

I will be presenting my MSc Dissertation titled "Simulation based
research for observing High Availability, Reliability, Performance and
Scalability using Virtualization and Live Migration" at Erlang
Consulting London Offices on Tuesday, November 11.

I will talk about concurrent and distributed computing within the
aspect of terminal services, identify some problems and propose
solutions.

Then I will review and analyze the data I have collected about the
proposed solutions. The data was collected using a simulation that I
have developed for this dissertation using Erlang/OTP.

*                              CALL FOR PARTICIPATION
*
* 20th International Symposium on the
* Implementation and Application of Functional Languages
*                                IFL 2008
*                         10-12.Sept 2008, Hatfield UK
*
*                      http://events.sac-home.org/ifl2008/
*
********************************************************************************

UPDATED DEADLINES:

     * Submission for draft proceedings: NOW 1. Sept
     * Early Registration: NOW 2. Sept

Please note, that the draft proceedings do NOT require full papers; extended
abstracts will be considered too.

********************************************************************************

The aim of the IFL symposia is to bring together researchers actively engaged in
the implementation and application of functional and function-based programming
languages. They provide an open forum for researchers who wish to present and
discuss new ideas and concepts, work in progress, preliminary results, etc.
related primarily but not exclusively to the implementation and application of
functional languages. Formal proceedings are produced after the symposium, so
that authors can incorporate the feedback from discussions at the symposium in
their published papers.

Topics
======

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

     * language concepts
     * type checking
     * compilation techniques
     * (abstract) interpretation
     * generic programming techniques
     * automatic program generation
     * array processing
     * concurrent/parallel programming
     * concurrent/parallel program execution
     * functional programming on embedded systems
     * functional programming on multi-cores/ many-cores
     * heap management
     * runtime profiling
     * performance measurements
     * debugging and tracing
     * (abstract) machine architectures
     * verification
     * formal aspects
     * tools and programming techniques

Papers on applications or tools demonstrating the suitability of novel ideas in
any of the above areas and contributions on related theoretical work are also
welcomed. The change of the symposium name adding the term application,
introduced in 2004, is to reflect the broader scope IFL has gained over the
years.

Paper Submissions
=================

Prospective authors are encouraged to submit papers to be published in the draft
proceedings and to present them at the symposium. All contributions must be
written in English, conform to the Springer-Verlag LNCS series format and not
exceed 16 pages. The draft proceedings will appear as a Technical Report of the
School of Computer Science of the University of Hertfordshire.

Attendees of IFL 2008 will have the opportunity to submit a revised version of
their paper for post-symposium reviewing. As in previous years, we hope that
selected papers will be published by Springer Verlag in the Lecture Notes in
Computer Science (LNCS) Series.

The Peter Landin Prize
======================

Since 2002 every year the Peter Landin Prize of 150 GBP is awarded to the best
paper presented at the symposium, as selected by the program committee.

Important Dates
===============

     * Submission for draft proceedings: NOW 1. Sept.
     * Early Registration: NOW 2. Sept.
     * Symposium: 10-12. September
     * Submission for post-refereeing: 14. November
     * Notification of acceptance / rejection: 23. January 2009
     * Submission of a camera ready version: 20. February 2009

same time. We show you what kind of applications you are able to build
with that.

However, CouchDB is no Silver Bullet and there are plenty of cases where
it is a poor fit. You will learn to decide when it is a good fit for
your project and when you are better off with a traditional database."

Notes:   Jonas Boberg will he presenting his thesis at the next Erlang London User Group Meeting. This is also a sneak preview of his paper which has been accepted at the 2008 ACM SIGPLAN workshop in Victoria, Canada. He has studied the use of Quick Check and Model Based testing in the before and after scenario of two similar Erlang related projects, with interesting results. With Summer Vacations and busy schedules, the presentation will be on Wednesday August 13th. It will start at 18.30 in Erlang Training and Consulting's London offices.

Abstract: Current and future trends for software include increasingly complex requirements on interaction between systems. As a result, the difficulty of system testing increases. Model based testing is a test technique where test cases are generated
from a model of the system. In this study we explore model-based testing on the system-level, starting from early development. We apply model-based testing to a sub-system of a message gateway product in order to improve early fault detection. The results are compared to another sub-system that is tested with hand-crafted test cases.

Based on our experiences, we present a set of challenges and recommendations for system-level, model-based testing. Early results indicate that model-based testing, starting from early development, significantly increases the number of faults detected during system testing.

Biography: Jonas Boberg has a Bachaleor's degree from the IT University of Gothenburg, Sweden. He is passionate about model based testing and test driven development, having worked with it throughout his studies and internships. He works as a Quick Check consultant for Erlang Training and Consulting.

Hi Londoners,

if you can not make it to the Erlang eXchange, but are available on
Thursday evening, join us and meet all the other Erlangers for the User
Groups session and the Erlang Party. Doors for everyone open at 6pm. To
attend, register at
  http://skillsmatter.com/event/erlang/erlang-exchange-2008-ug-sessions

We will also be streaming the event. You can find the stream on
www.erlang-exchange.com starting at 8.45 UK time. The Keynotes will
start at 9.15 on Thursday and Friday. If you register on Yaika.com, you
will be able to ask questions remotely via IM (And if you have a webcam,
we might be able to project your face on the screen).

We kept this announcement to the very last minute, as the service is in
beta mode we are unsure of what loads the servers can handle (We expect
500+ viewers across all the channels, but it has not been tested yet).
If all goes well, expect it to be a regular occurrence of all our user
group meetings and conferences. We are also taping the events and will
post the talks on the eXchange site.

Regards,
Francesco

Abstract:Refactoring is the process of improving the design of a program without changing its semantics. Wrangler is a refactor tool for Erlang, which supports plenty of refactorings. After giving a short introduction to the Wrangler project, Melinda will explain her goal of finding new useful refactorings and implement them. These include a refactoring to group function arguments into a tuple, and a refactoring to create a record from a tuple. This latter refactoring requires investigation of common usage patters for "record-like" usage of patterns in Erlang programs. George will then describe his project of integrating Wrangler in the Eclipse platform, as a part of the Erlide project. He will describe the integration process, how communication works in the system, as well as providing a short demo of the system as well.

Dear Erlang User,

As part of our involvement in the Protest Project consortium, an EU
funded research project on property based testing and test driven
development, we are compiling a survey on tools developed, supported and
maintained by the Erlang community. You can read more about it on the
Protest Project website (http://www.protest-project.eu).

We appreciate your time in helping us. The link to the survey is here:
http://FreeOnlineSurveys.com/rendersurvey.asp?sid=49wp7cnhy77u38q447214

If you prefer, you can be anonymous. We would appreciate a response by
Monday the 9th. Filling it in should not take longer than 5 minutes. Its
results will be presented at Erlang conferences and workshops and made
public on the protest website. If you have any queries, do not hesitate
to contact Tamas on tamas@....

Thank You,

Hi All,

The registration is in place for the Erlang UG meeting at 18.30 on
Wednesday the 21st of May. Visit
http://skillsmatter.com/event/erlang/erlang-ug-may-meeting to sign up.

The main talk will be on on Smarkets Erlang Web Framework (See
http://www.erlang-consulting.com/erlang/events.html#56) , but we  also
have Lennart Ohman from Sweden. Lennart is the inventor of the OTP
Erlang design patterns and has been around the Erlang community since
1992, initially working on a Master's thesis project at the Computer
Science Lab, where Erlang was invented, and later with Erlang Systems,
Ericson's Erlang training and consulting arm. He will give a quick talk
on why the OTP design patterns were invented, who the original target
users were, giving us an insight into the history of what ended up
becoming the middle-ware used in all major industrial Erlang projects.

See you on Wednesday,
Francesco
