Condoleezza Rice (Condi), the current US Secretary of State, is arguably the most powerful woman in the world.
She has done some unusual things, including hugging foreign leaders. Unlike her boss, George W Bush, she comes across as a nice person who genuinely cares about problems in the world. No wonder she is one of the favourites to become the running-mate of Republican Party presidential candidate John McCain.
There are obviously advantages from the point of view of global capitalism and Republican Party strategists of having a McCain-Rice ticket, particularly if Barack Obama (who is surely now certain to become the Democrats' candidate) picks Hillary Clinton as his running mate. An attractive black woman like Condi would help to cut across the lack of charisma of John McCain, as well as appealing to non-white people and women who would be particularly turned off by McCain. Some may expect that McCain would kick the bucket in the near future, allowing Condi, a very well-intentioned woman in a party made up predominantly of poorly-intentioned people, to become president via the back door.
A Republican Party victory in the 2008 presidential election, after the appalling record of the George W Bush administration (with vice president Dick Cheney arguably pulling the strings), would be a kick in the teeth for the billions of ordinary people around the world who hate the role US imperialism has played under Bush (for example, in invading Iraq and in supporting dictatorships such as the Saudi royal family).
As reported on the Condoleeza Rice Must GO website (http://condimustgo.com), complete with a video of her supporting torture, Condi has undermined her own chances of becoming a running-mate to McCain. Just about the only thing that is good about McCain is that he has spoken out against torture, so a ticket with someone who has spoken in favour of it would be an utter disaster!
Does Condi really support torture, including the infamous "water-boarding" which makes inmates at places like Guantanamo Bay think they are drowning and will therefore confess to anything (probably not the truth), as shown in a video with a volunteer on an Amnesty International website (http://www.unsubscribe-me.
The above are just the views of the group creator (Steve Wallis). Those who want to put across alternative views about Condi, the presidential election, or US or world politics generally, are welcome on this group.
