Hi everyone,

Is anyone involved in prospect research / fundraising from U.S foundations?  We're 501(c)3 registered in the U.S, but conduct our fundraising from the U.K.  We have relationships with a few foundations already, and are now trying to really step up our work over there so will be doing a lot of research over the coming months.

I'd love to talk to anyone who is doing something similar (or has done in the past) to learn about your experiences of U.S research and foundation fundraising from afar, the best approaches, tailoring to the U.S market, networks etc.

I know that this forum is European focused, but I hope that some of you might be looking at the U.S as well - or perhaps someone else in your organisation is?

I'd be delighted to hear from anyone whose brains I might be able to pick!

Cheers,
Victoria

Dear All

Just in case you have missed this one, the European Court of Justice
has issued a new ruling on cross-border giving, which, if it is
eventually accepted into national laws in the EU states, is good news
for philanthropists and fundraisers.

I have compiled the details and some links at

Hi Jim,
In short, I would say definitely you should engage with them and that
they very well may be a source of funding. I have worked for a few HE
institutions which have successfully engaged students who were either
on exchange progs or enrolled in short, one year, courses. One in
particular was an older alum who turned out to work for a donor
consortium in the US and has been an ongoing source of very
substantial funding.

I think it doesn't matter how long the student was at the institution,
it matters how much they enjoyed their time there and whether or not
they feel a connection with it... the latter is something that
Development can help with! Also, as Tufts has a v good reputation, I
imagine international students might wish to maintain a relationship
w/the institution for a) the prestige and b) the networking, so again
Dev can use this to their advantage if you host things like alumni
networking events to which these folks get invited.

Best wishes,
Heather

Here at Tufts University we have an active study aboard program for
our students. At the same time, however, we also have students from
abroad who come to Tufts to study for 1 year or a semester.

Do any of you know if your university has a similar program bringing
students from abroad to your university for a short time, and do you
make attempts to engage and/or solicit these international students
for donations? Are there any success stories?

I have read in the past that international students often have a
strong affinity for other universities they have attended, even if
only for a semester or year. We are hoping to make the case to our DOs
and technical staff that these students could be a valuable
fundraising resource.

Dear all

In case this message was missed in the run up to Christmas…!

I have been searching high and low for a directory of some kind (along
the lines of the DSC Guide To Company Giving) which allows one to
search companies with a Europe-wide or global presence by search
criteria such as CSR/Corporate Community Involvement policies, as well
as areas in which they operate.

Does anyone know of such a thing - either hard copy or as an online
directory?

If not, is there a next best thing?

Thanks so much in advance

Hi All,

Have any of you purchased the guides on european funding published by
ECAS? If so, thoughts please? I am not sure how relevant something
published only once/twice a year can be, but on the other hand they're
not very expensive.

Hi Jude

Have you checked fResource/THINK Resource, or tried a good library for international foundation directories?

In January 2008, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, vice president and prime minister of the United Arab Emirates, announced the launch of the Arab Centre for Philanthropy. I am not sure that much is available yet.

Since 2002, the Charity Commission has provided technical assistance to over 20 countries and has run regional workshops “to share best practice”. The Commission works in the Middle East, Africa, South Asia and South East Asia, and it has developed www.NGOregnet.org “to be a portal for national and international best practice”. The NGO website “is designed to help people, organisations and governments find out more about the regulation of NGOs”, and “acts as a gateway to information on developments around the world”. There is some information on the United Arab Emirates, but not much at the moment. Unfortunately, useful though this site can be, the Charity Commission doesn’t keep it as up to date as they might. I understand that this is due to financial constraints. Do let them know if you want them to update things. If we tell them, they might recognize that there is some demand for this resource.

Good luck

Greetings colleagues!

Just a note to let you know that Chris Carnie will be speaking for
ShareTraining on December 9th at 16.00 (UK) on The New Wealth In Europe.

Session Description:
The introduction of the Euro in 1999 heralded more than just a change
in currency. New people of wealth have started to appear in Europe -
entrepreneurs, women, wealth from the Middle East and from Russia. Part
of this wealth is now turning into philanthropy.

Join Chris as he describes recent news and studies on wealth across
Europe, how best to identify and research wealth in Europe, and where
we can expect growth in the future.

STEP AHEAD Free professional fundraising, law and finance surgeries for the charity sector.
Tuesday 25th November 3-6pm,  Reception 6-7.30pm

On the afternoon of November 25th, fundraising consultants Midas Charity Appeals, law firm Taylor Vinters and chartered accountants UHY Hacker Young will join forces to deliver a dynamic portfolio of free surgeries for charities, in London.  The surgeries are designed to offer an intelligent and wide range of generic advice for senior staff, fundraisers and trustees and will cover subjects such as charity tax, good governance, VAT and fundraising events, major philanthropy, core funding sources, and avoiding the risk of claims and disputes.  The surgeries will culminate in a reception where charities can network with senior fundraisers, lawyers and accountants.
Delegates are invited to book a half hour session with our experts, or drop-in and talk informally to representatives of the three companies, or simply to join us at a reception from 6-7.30 where they can discuss their needs.   To register for drop-in, a surgery or the reception, please contact Martin Shaw at info@midasappeals. org.uk - and feel free to circulate this email to your colleagues.

Hello All,

Just seen this article on the Third Sector... Looks like we should be
investing more in Europe in this current economic crisis!...

European fundraisers 'expect finances to grow'
By Hannah Jordan , Third Sector Online, 16 October 2008

Fundraisers across Europe are expecting their finances to grow
despite the economic downturn, according to a study unveiled at the
International Fundraising Congress in Holland yesterday.

The State of the Not-For-Profit Industry Survey from third sector
technology consultancy Blackbaud asked 466 organisations in the UK,
Germany and Holland questions on issues including fundraising, use of
the internet, general operations and accountability and stewardship.

It revealed that Dutch organisations were most optimistic, with 78
per cent of respondents expecting income to grow this financial year,
compared with 63 per cent of UK respondents and 52 per cent of those
from Germany.

Fundraisers were also positive about 2009, with financial growth
expected by 86 per cent of Dutch charities, 71 per cent in the UK and
62 per cent of German organisations that responded. However, it
showed that none expected to increase staffing levels.

About half of all organisations surveyed forecast an increase in
online donations. Web communication was considered vital by almost 70
per cent of UK respondents, but only 34 per cent were happy with
their own site. The full report will be available on 1 November.

Hi Everyone,
Trying this out... I'm sorry I wasn't able to attend the meeting as we
had a big event on, but thanks Jude for organising!

I had intended to bring this up though. We have had a subscription to
Welcome Europe (online database and email alerts) for the past three
months, just to try it out, and I must say I've found it totally
useless. However, I'm wondering whether their books are more useful,
and that perhaps the functionality of their searches just isn't set
properly (for the d/b).

Does anyone else subscribe to any of their books/services? Thoughts?

Best wishes,
Heather
