Hi Terry,
With regard to access through Lee Abbey grounds, in my experience
the owners/fellowship are completely fine about crossing the
grounds, i have been going to Lee stone since I was 6ish with my
dad/uncle (most of my family live in Lynton) fishing, (how i got to
love the exmoor coast) as long as you close all the gates and
respect the land there will be no problems. We have even parked in
their carpark and have had no problems. There is a whole network of
public paths around the area so access is easy.
Hewitt's rock is another fishing venue, a large slab of rock sloping
gently seawards, it also has a blow-hole from a cave underneath the
rock that works in a big swell, it often puffs out lots of air which
scared me to death the first time it happened. The GR is 712501, its
about 300-400 metres west of Ruddy Ball (OS map 9 outdoor leisure,
Exmoor) A new path has been cut down from North Walk to lynmouth,
and the Hewitts path branches off to the left, someone has blocked
it off and signposted it as private, it has been a public path for
decades so we still use it regardless. The bottom is dangerous with
loose rock and mud that could slip away at any time, if it hasnt
already. I would not chance it alone without being roped.
I will compose a list of local names of places along the coast along
with grid ref's, quite a few are on the OS maps.
I love walking the coast and fishing, I would love to get into
scrambling and maybe climbing, I have no climbing/scrambling
equipment or experience and in the past have just used ropes pegged
to the ground to access places like Goat rock. I wonder if you could
advise me of some basic equipment I would need to scramble up to
grade 3, such as ropes, wallnuts/hexes/ a harness. I would be very
grateful if you could. I would like to come along with your group if
thats ok, but as I have said I have no equipment or experience so I
wouldnt want to be a hinderance to you, I would prefer to start on
easy scrambles then progress. My knowledge of the coast westward
from foreland point to almost Hartland point because I also love
surfing so I know the Bideford bay area too, I might be able to help
you with that section of the Exmoor coast (foreland to Combe martin)
so if you have any questions then feel free to ask.
Thanks Terry
Marcus
