Sherrycombe Waterfall to Gt Hangman Gut 2nd March 2006   Message List
Reply | Forward Message #58 of 728 |
Richard and I descended to the beach at Sherrycombe by abseil down the
east side of the waterfall. If you are going down the same route in
the future the old abseil sling needs replacing. Todays low water of
0.1m gave us a window of about three hours to move along the beach to
the foot of Great Hangman Gut. We dumped our kit at the foot of the
gut and continued on across Blackstone beach to have a look at Miners
Gully and the mine adits. The bottom of Gt Hangman Gut is in a
reasonable condition at the moment, I would say that it is a grade 1
gully until it gets wet and the red shale comes unstuck. We found it
useful to have an axe for the first 150ft. It is 210ft to the first
belay. This has been the least difficult gully so far but it is steep
and long at 1280ft. Photos are on the Exmoor Coast Group site @
www.geocities.com/exmoorwalker. click on photos and scroll to the
bottom of the page. Must get around to weeding the old stuff out soon.
