Since last Tues one third of the small slab at the foot of the climb
has fallen away. Most of the jamming crack remains and a useful
foothold has appeared under the remaining portion of the slab. This
move was the hardest on the route and gave it the grade of HVS. It was
too wet for us to have a try at it but it does look easier. Terry

All the old pics in the Photo Folder have been removed and replaced by pics of the last three trips. The folder is now full to capacity (30mb). Any new photos will mean that the oldest will have to be deleted. The current pics have not been reduced in any way and I believe that they can be copied and printed in their original form. They can also be viewed as a slide show.

The next trip along the coast will be from Lee Bay to Crock Point on
the 2nd March. Meet at Lee Bay car park 1030am. This is a fairly easy
traverse but take your rock boots as there will be an opportunity to
climb/boulder on Crock Point. Go to the Files folder for the info
sheet. Crock Point. Sorry about the download time I made the photos
too large. Terry

Jon, Jamie, Tom and I completed the traverse in four hours so it looks
like you need to allow 1 hour per person. This is the second time Jon
and I have done this route and we both found that the hard move up the
edge of the main face from the slab below on the east side is not
getting any easier. Need a second opinion here, it could be 5b.

Ive finally thought of something we can do this Sunday.
Meet at Worthy Combe Car Park at 1030am. GR SS858482. Parking £1 all
day.
Walk / scramble, depending on the tide, along the beach to the
Ivystone. GR SS838487.
Do the Ivystone Traverse.(description in the files section of the
site) This can be by-passed if it is too rough or cold.
Escape up the steep ridge above the Ivystone (scramble and walking)
to the alternative coast path then return to vehicles via Culbone.
BRING: Screwgates, Prussik loops, couple of large slings and just in
case some form of buoyancy in your bag such as a plastic football or
container. Keep your bag light.
There is only one hard move on this route and the belayer will be
5ft directly above you. The route is shown on the Ivystone page of
the Exmoor Coast Climbing site.
If you prefer rock boots and chalk please bring them. You will need
walking boots there and back.

If you can make this trip we all look forward to meeting those who
have recently signed onto the site.

Im sorry if you recieve two emails but until everyone moves over to
the site I cannot be sure that I have reached everyone.

If you are going on Sun or need to know more, email or ring me on
01823 251800. Terry

Hello Everyone, The tide is against us this weekend. High water on Sun
is at 1109am and will stay under the cliffs for much of the day. The
bouldering wall at Hurlstone will be awash until late afternoon. We
should be able to get to the climbs on Coastguard Wall if you have not
done them. All of the gully's will be inaccessible so if it is
freezing cold or damp we could have a recce of what appears to be an
undiscovered 200m high slab to the west of Sir Roberts Chair. This
will involve a long descent. We could meet at Bossington Car Park or
County Gate car park at 1030am. Let me know if you are interested.

31st January 2006. Tide 9.9m @ 0711 and 0.5m @ 1324.
Kes, Jon, Jamie, Julian and I descended the 400ft cliff just east of
Notch Gully. We hope to climb the gully this winter. It looks hard
with two steps, one of 30ft at least.
We traversed the beach on the exceptionally low tide from North Cleave
Gut to Holelake Waterfall climbing Window Pinnacle along the way. The
gully at the back of North Cleave Gut looks promising but will require
a recce from the top. Neck Wood Gut has suffered a massive rockfall
from the east side of Neck Wood. The good news is that a caving ladder
is no longer required as you can now climb up the debris into the
gully. It still looks very steep though. Photos are on the site.

Here are some of the local names for various parts of the coast that
I can think of off hand, these are the ones not listed on the OS
maps or any of the climbing/walking sites.

From East to West.

1 Ninnywell bay, Grid Ref: 735496. Small bay, has an escape route
via the gully above, which is actually a fault between 2 types of
rock. You may have seen a car on the beach here before, someone
drove it off the cliff (suicide).
2 Bass rock and Caves OS 729496. 3 caves in total, the middle one
has a blow-hole, Bass rock is the large stand alone rock just to the
west of the caves.
3 First and second Blacklands, First Blacklands OS 726496, Second
Blacklands OS 728496, a load of large rocks (Point Perilous)
seperates the coarse sandy beaches (high tide)
4: The salmon traps OS 724500, old wooden salmon trap, slowly being
destryoed by the sea, seen at low tide on the eastern beach.
5: The old bathing pool, OS 720499 the large pool on the western
beach at Lynmouth
6: Hewitts rock OS 712501, fishing venue, large slab of gently
sloping rock, has a path (unsafe path) up to North walk. Also beware
of the blow hole it can scare you if your not expecting it.
7: Iron Railings OS 705500, known to climbers as the East/West
inlets/dog hole. Known to Locals as 'Iron Railings'
8: Yellowstone: OS 704498 the big yellow rock below and to the east
of castle rock, there is access up and down, no fixed rope but there
is a peg in the grass slope above.
9: Jenifers leap OS694496 a sheer cliff, old lookout, where a girl
named Jenifer commited suicide a fair while ago.
10:Second Lee bay OS 691493, a second beach west of Lee bay thats
uncovered at low tide.

Thats all I can really think of off the top of my head now, If I
think of any more I will reply to this message. So if you hear any
of these mentioned then you might now know where to find them!

Hi Terry,
With regard to access through Lee Abbey grounds, in my experience
the owners/fellowship are completely fine about crossing the
grounds, i have been going to Lee stone since I was 6ish with my
dad/uncle (most of my family live in Lynton) fishing, (how i got to
love the exmoor coast) as long as you close all the gates and
respect the land there will be no problems. We have even parked in
their carpark and have had no problems. There is a whole network of
public paths around the area so access is easy.
Hewitt's rock is another fishing venue, a large slab of rock sloping
gently seawards, it also has a blow-hole from a cave underneath the
rock that works in a big swell, it often puffs out lots of air which
scared me to death the first time it happened. The GR is 712501, its
about 300-400 metres west of Ruddy Ball (OS map 9 outdoor leisure,
Exmoor) A new path has been cut down from North Walk to lynmouth,
and the Hewitts path branches off to the left, someone has blocked
it off and signposted it as private, it has been a public path for
decades so we still use it regardless. The bottom is dangerous with
loose rock and mud that could slip away at any time, if it hasnt
already. I would not chance it alone without being roped.
I will compose a list of local names of places along the coast along
with grid ref's, quite a few are on the OS maps.
I love walking the coast and fishing, I would love to get into
scrambling and maybe climbing, I have no climbing/scrambling
equipment or experience and in the past have just used ropes pegged
to the ground to access places like Goat rock. I wonder if you could
advise me of some basic equipment I would need to scramble up to
grade 3, such as ropes, wallnuts/hexes/ a harness. I would be very
grateful if you could. I would like to come along with your group if
thats ok, but as I have said I have no equipment or experience so I
wouldnt want to be a hinderance to you, I would prefer to start on
easy scrambles then progress. My knowledge of the coast westward
from foreland point to almost Hartland point because I also love
surfing so I know the Bideford bay area too, I might be able to help
you with that section of the Exmoor coast (foreland to Combe martin)
so if you have any questions then feel free to ask.

Thanks Terry

Thanks for the info Marcus. I was aware of the descent at Duty Point
but not of the new paths. I know fishermen visit the ledges but we
have never been sure of the situation re access through the abbey
grounds. I have only once had to use that route to escape from the
beach and did so furtivily to avoid being seen. Do you know what the
situation is re access? As for Hewitts Rock thats a new one on me. If
you have local names for features along the coast I would be grateful
if you could let us have them along with a grid ref. I don't know what
your interest is in the coast but if its climbing or scrambling on the
cliffs your welcome to join us. Terry

Just incase you dont know I think I should advise you about some path
slippages and rope removals I have discovered.
Firstly the path down to Duty point/Lee stone (GR 69454975) has
slipped at roughly GR696496 , the old path is still passable with care
but new sections of path have been cut higher up. (as of 2 months ago).
The fixed rope down to the east of lee stone still remains but is not
in good condtion GR696497.
Secondly the path down to/just above Hewitts rock (GR 712501)has been
in bad condition now for a few years due to land slides and I feel
soon it will be dangerous/impassable without ropes, the fixed rope
that was there has been cut.

These path's could be valuable escape routes should you get cut off
near-by.

Thursday 1st December 2005.
Climbed Great Red with Jon in heavy rain. The round trip took us 3
hours. This gully really has changed with the first 500ft being loose
scree. The rock step has become awkward with a loose boulder perched
above it and the following 150ft is worrying. All in all a good trip.

17th November 2005. New traverse line across the Ivystone main face
at
35ft. 265ft and mostly 4a severe throughout, BUT the very exposed 8ft
crux hanging out over the water is 5a, therefore for safety we have
put the grade at HVS 5a. This was done in big boots with no chalk,
above a rough sea this is going to be an adventurous trip. An
interesting circular trip would be to start at Porlock Weir or Worthy
Combe (cheaper parking £1)walk into the Ivystone do the traverse
then
scramble up the ridge above to the alternative coast path. Return via
Culbone having visited the smallest church in England.

On this tide we found difficulty passing Clinnocks Hole as the tide

Hannington's cave. The crucial boulder is still in place to aid the
descent to the beach at The Flying Buttress. Evidence of a great deal
of nesting activity on the cliffs. No changes at The A Cave or Black

Change of venue due to poor weather. Group of 6 walked into The

in place at the Culbone stream outlet. Top roped on St Bueno's Slab

three routes. Benji's last Route HVS 4c. Celt E3 5b and Martin
Crockers un-named route E5 6a, and no one slipped?.
Ivystone Ridge and surrounding paths are getting some use from deer
and are clear but some erosion. The route over the top of The
Ivystone
from beach to beach remains ok but care is required on the east side
when stepping from the grass slope onto the ground above St Bueno,s

All slab routes look clean but the main face has a covering of guano
