Hello! I'm new to Exmoor, from Canada and looking for someone(s) to go out
climbing with. I've done quite a lot of climbing in Canada, and some in the
Peak District since arriving in the UK. In Canada I'm an indoor climbing
instructor and have recently done my SPA training. I'm super keen, based in
Exford and available on Wednesdays and Thursdays. If you need someone to go
climbing with, I'm game! E-mail at joyohaver@...

hadn't thought of tilting it! although my mate did take a photo of me on Fallen Slab at portland (clues in the name folks) which attempts to make me look like an overhang star. unfortunately the way the gear on my harness hangs down gives it away!

The question is... if I tilt Surrey, should I do it to aim myself (ball bearing fashion) at Devon and Cornwall, taking in a bit of Dorset coast on the way, or to aim North?

Was good to see some climbing and history on the tellie anyway.

best wishes

Nikki

Since March portions 1 and 3 and remaining slab up to the grass have fallen. 4 and the remaining slab to the left up to the grass has also gone. Brandyman is now a complete goner and the top of Voyage which is shared by other routes has changed dramatically, but the original fault line is still visible on the new exposed slab. An awful lot of grass has sprouted out along the length of  the Coney Combe tier, no doubt due to the rubbish weather since the start of the year.

Hi Mike, Im back and catching up on my mail. Countryfile were put onto the traverse by the Coast program. Last september we did 3 days filming out on the traverse. This is being shown on tues 28th july at 8pm BBC2. I understand that we get about 4 - 5 mins due to the fact that my face was better suited for radio. If they include the helicopter footage it should be quite interesting for climbers wanting to try the traverse. I spoke to Richard Chadwick a few days ago. It seems that countryfile is still interested. I have given him the dates of the tidal windows for access this year. Having experienced filming with the bbc with its health and safety issues it would be much better from the outset to inform any future media companies to think boat and helicopter rather than humping all the kit down and back up 800ft of cliff. Terry.

I have been on pretty much all of the traverse route. I am happy to offer any
advice/information I can.

As you say, Terry is away for a few weeks. You might like to try tracking Kes
webb down - he is an expert on the Exmoor Coast and occasionally gives
talks/slide shows.

You don't mention what it is that they actually want to know/do. If they are
hoping to do some filming it should be noted that the tides are very poor on the
15th, with low water at 17.17 of 2.7m. Really this precludes access to quite a
lot of places. The tides are the most significant single issue on the Exmoor
coast and dictate absolutely what you can do.

One does also have to be aware that the term 'climbing', when applied to
traversing the Exmoor coast, has the broadest of meanings: Typically a day of
traversing would involve scrambling, abseiling, caving, clambering over miles of
sodden boulder beach, clawing up near-vertical grass/heather/landslip, and a
very long walk. Actual technical climbing is very limited.

Pitched trad climbing is generally limited to Hurlstone area, The Ivy Stone,
Valley of Rocks and under Valley of Rocks - Hollerday wall etc.

The Hurlstone area is very popular for climbing with easy access from West
Bay/Bossington beach, the fisherman's rope in Coneycombe or Loz's rope in
Eastcombe. This area is scenic, has steep cliffs, sand drama and all that - but
is 5 mins from Porlock.

Do drop me a line on my mobile, 07595 994 616 if you want a chat about the
various issues/what's achievable/accessible.

Other than that I'm afraid that there are very few people with a great deal of
knowledge/experience on the subject.

Terry's potted history and account of his 1978 complete traverse can be found at
http://members.madasafish.com/~exmoorwalker/page100.html.

Kind regards,

Mark

On Wednesday I abseiled down the line of Brandyman to inspect the change brought about by the hanging block deciding to leave and join its mates on the slope below, also to attempt to find a new way up onto the upper slab. I was stunned to find that the entire east side of the feature is in danger of sliding and falling from the cliff.

On the 14th October 2007 it was reported that an overlap ( 5 ) had fallen. This did not affect the routes passing over it other than to increase the step up onto the slab above by about four inches. It was also noticed during October 2007 that the section ( 4 ) was dropping and the horizontal crack above was expanding in width. There has not been any noticeable change here.

The final crack on Brandyman has expanded to twice its original width tending to indicate that the section of slab ( 3 ) has moved down and right by about half an inch. It has also started to crush and shatter the block ( 1 ), which is also yawning away from the cliff and is in a very dangerous condition.

Unfortunately it seems that we have to let Brandyman go, as there is little point in working on a route that may not be there next week. Then again, it did take the hanging block twenty-nine years to fall.

You are right Becky, the jammed block on the brandyman overlap has gone.
It does not appear to have taken anyone with it. Got to find a different
way up the overlap now.

The weather looks good although the swell is running a couple of feet
outside my comfort zone, so if anyone is about I will be at Hurlstone
tomorrow at 1030 doing some bouldering. Probably parking on the beach.
There should be almost a four hour window from 1230 when it should be
possible depending on the swell to scramble around the point and out
onto Selworthy Sands. I will be completely knackerd by then and ready

Hello, I live in combe martin and the wonerous potential of the exmoor
coast is just starting to dawn on me. I've done a fair bit of climbing
and mountaineering in my time and I'm starting to think that i might
just have moved next tot he best adventure climbing spot i've seen in
years.

So, anybody up for a gully or two. Low tide is about 3pm. The weather
forcast is drizzle, Hoop hoooooop hoooop who's up for a choss adventure?

About two foot deep here, Terry! I had an interesting drive back from
Barnstaple around midnight last night.

Hi Terry, no worries! It must be on the southside of the moor and not
the coast. Dad just tried to get to Lynton (from Barnstaple), got as
far as the other side of Shirwell and no further. Got about 6-8
inches there.
Might try and get up on the moor somehow tomorrow! haha
