Subject: Yet Another New Solar Cycle 24 Sunspot Group

Posted Sunday November 15, 2009 at http://www.wcflunatall.com/nz4o4.htm
Yesterday yet another solar cycle 24 sunspot group emerged, this time in the
NE quadrant of the Sun near N29E35. As of yet it has not received a number
by SIDC Belgium or NOAA/SWPC. If numbered by NOAA/SWPC it would receive
#11031.

This new sunspot group pushed the solar flux index (SFI) to 75.9 yesterday
and could push the SFI above 80 in coming days. This would raise the maximum
usable frequency (MUF) of the F layer high enough to improve propagation
conditions on 20, 17 and 15 meters.

Under the very old method of counting sunspots SIDC Belgium gave the sunspot
group a number of 11. But in reality only one simple sunspot actually
emerged.

The solar cycle 24 sunspot group that emerged on Friday November 13, 2009
that received SIDC Belgium Catania #25 and located in the SW quadrant of the
Sun has faded, with it's remnant Plage currently setting around the west
limb of the Sun. It did not receive #11031 by NOAA/SWPC.

Also yesterday old solar cycle 24 sunspot group #11029 rose above the east
limb of the Sun but is only a large Plage with no sunspots. Last month
#11029 made it's debut as the largest and most active sunspot group in
fledgling solar cycle 24.

Greetings from chilly Rochester, VT where I'm still on vacation.

Posted Saturday November 14, 2009 at http://www.wcflunatall.com/nz4o4.htm
Yesterday a new solar cycle 24 sunspot group emerged in the SW quadrant of
the Sun near S27W53. It currently contains a beta magnetic signature capable
of producing very small B class solar flares.

It remains to be seen if NOAA/SWPC will assign it #11031 before it fades or
sets around the west limb of the Sun. Solar cycle 24 continues to slowly but
steadily become more active.

To give a similar example, as a kid I started out in the 50s
listening to far away AM radio stations. Right up through the 70s,
many stations, the 1,000 KW > peanut whistle stations would have to
sign off the air at sundown to protect the signal pattern of the
clear channel or regional station. During sign-offs and sign ons,
often the station would warm up the transmitter. I noticed this
amplifier effect, as one stations clears the way for the other to come in.

In the winter, in Connecticut, we would often hear WRFD in Columbus,
Ohio knocking out the mighty 880 WCBS 50K flame thrower in
NYC. WHEB in Portsmouth NH used to play tag with WSB Atlanta and so
on. These in between times were always great for adding an extra
station to the AM log.

In ha radio, that's playing the gray line.

Pete, KZ1Z

Hi

I know what I am about to ask happens to everyone one in a while.

I am talking to a station in the mode Feld Hell and the other station is a
579 signal, not bad all the print is comming through but kinda of have to
strain the eyes to get every word.

All of a sudden a digital station up or down band starts sending and the
whole screen goes white, which means maybe is is overpower or whatever.

Since your screen is white now and the station you are in QSO with is
making it over the other station all of a sudden the station your are in qso
with print is much much better, crystal clear with no eye strain to read it
since it is black on white now instead of black on grey. So the other
digital station upband is helping make your qso much eaiser by wipeing out the
whole band.

Is there a name for this.

Please, give me a break!

It's just another waste of time Facebook, Twitter, etc., type of
social-networking site, disguising itself as a "productivity" tool. Heck Hams
were doing this stuff back in the 1970's, 1980's and early 1990's when all the
Twits on Twitter where just gleams in our eyes. It was called packet radio,
remember?

Today, APRS and the APRS-IS is a far superior social-networking system for Hams,
as I can both see and talk-to, in real-time (using a Geographical Information
System or GIS, and communicate with one, a group, or all on the radio waves or
Internet, around the world.

It can be productive using APRS for various real-life situations, and not just
those mindless and banal "I'm having a crap now," Tweets from the Twits on
Twitter, et al.

So, you have 1,000,000 Facebook friends. Big deal! Bill Gates was right: "If you
can't make it good, at least make it look good."

I am working on setting up a common WAVE account for any club member to play
with. If you want to try and snag yourself a personal invite and you are on
twitter, Do a search of hash tag (#)Wave. There are many users their that
have invites to give away for the asking. Be sure you have a Google or Gmail
account setup before asking for the invite to be sent to you.

Google Wave is currently in "limited preview", and you cannot join without
being invited by someone who actually has an account.

This is basically a way to make sure the servers can handle the load, and
allow them to ramp it up as more users get on board with it.

GMail was the same way initially.

You may have seen some FHC members talking about Google WAVE and wondered
what it is as I did. Basicaly it's a new realtime colaborative service
provided by Google. It may change the way we all use email. We are exploring
how we can apply the new service to enhance our club. Currently, you must be
invited by a user to get the WAVE service. AS soon as I get my batch of
invites I will make them availble to FHC members that want them. Also, if
you have invites to give out, please let me know. Here is a link to a little
video about the service

I'm a younger goat - on a differant mountain but we seem to have an increasing
herd! If the intention is for us all to meet, then the earlier the better.

0400Z is way too late for me. 0200 would be better for this old goat.

On the other hand, 0400 is about the time 80 meters is opening up on the west
coast.  0400 is fine with me.

0400 is rather late on the East Coast, however, it is a Friday which would
make it easier to operate since for most there is no work detail the following
morning. I am constructing my 80m inverted V and will have one placed this
week for net / routine operating on 80m.

I am not sure if my post went out Friday. What is the feeling RE changing
the Friday night net (local day) to 0400Z (2000 PST). I would like some
comments?
