Hi Dave,

There's always plenty to look at, up or down, whatever the weather.

Hope the knees are okay soon.

Hapy walking,

Greetings,

I've uploaded some more recent photographs to Flickr.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/davida/

For those of you who may be wondering, I didn't get up on the fells on
my last holiday due to tendonitis in both my knees. It's okay going up,
not so good coming down. But I found plenty to interest me on the
ground, so to speak.

Hi Maggie

What a great day for your walk. That was the walk we intended doing last March,
but due to the weather we had to turn back. It's such a lovely area.
The photos were very good.

Crag and Stand Crags - Monday 9th November

A sparkling, sunny day and an opportunity climb Hartsop Above How to complete my
round of the Eastern Fells. I was well prepared for the frosty start to my walk
but stupidly I hadn't thought about the possibility of ice on the road over the
Kirkstone Pass! I crawled along in low gear and luckily managed to avoid mishap.
It'll be the long way round for me next time!

As for the walk, conditions were near perfect with clear blue skies, great
visibility and little wind. I parked at Bridgend and ascended Hartsop Above How
and Hart Crag followed by Dove Crag. I descended via Stand Crags, Stangs,
Dovedale and back via Brothers Water. A wonderful day with the only drawback
being the drive back to Manchester :-(
Photos are in the usual place, hope you enjoy them:

Maggie,
I do so envy you this walk. It is one we have done a number of times usually on
similar days to yours. Beautiful views to all quarters ...brilliant. We made do
with the gentler western Dales but in similar weather...I'm going for another
look ;-)
Take care,
Dave

Hi Ann,
Many thanks for your kind words. It was lovely to have Sophie, the request was
completely out of the blue so there was no way we could refuse a walk.
"reet la'al worrit" .... This was what the old fisherman used to call us
youngsters, basically a right little annoying so and so. She loves to wind me up
and I her, but all in good fun.
I was more than happy to comment when Peter asked by e_mail. All the comments
made are well deserved.
Regards,
Dave

Hi Paul

I have to echo Peter's comments on dry sacks. John and I have used them to line
our rucksacks for a few years now and they have as yet to let us down despite a
few very memorable wet walks. If the only issue you have with your new rucksack
is its ability to keep stuff dry they might be worth investigating.

I noted on your query about cameras you mentioned the Panasonic Lumix camera. I
have used a Lumix for a few years now and should money allow would certainly be
considering upgrading to the new version.

   Hi all.

Yesterday out in the Peak my almost new rucksack, Karrimor Kodiak 35, failed
miserably. The rain was fairly consistent in the morning, but it wasn't
wind driven, nor opaque. I've been in a lot worse with my old North Face
sack and had no problems. But when I got home, I noticed my spare clothing
in the sack were wet, not damp, but wet. Worse, the side pockets, where I
keep things like note book, torch, batteries etc were also wet, as was the
hood, which held the spare maps. The sack has a weather proof cover, which
maybe a bit of a sign. But this didn't manage to keep the things dry
   inside.

So it looks like I am going to need a new sack, But which one??

I mainly do day walks in all weathers and over all terrain. But I have
recently ventured in to Long Distance paths so walks of 5-10 days may need
to be catered for. In my training for the rangers I need to carry certain
items, which we probably carry anyway. The list includes,

   Waterproofs

   Spare clothing,

   Survival Bag

   First aid kit

   Torch

   Maps

   Compass

   Emergency rations

   Food

   Drink

   Socks

   GPS

   Mobile phone

   Hat

   Stick

   Whistle

   Knife

   Camera / Binoculars

So you see its quite a bit.

What sacks do other people use, size, make etc that is my question.

Along with my camera questions, this could well become a series!!!

Next boots and the best breakfast to start the day!!

   Many thanks in anticipation.

Dear Paul,

I have a Berghaus rucksac that I bought when I first came to London. It wasn't
bad when I bought it, in fact I suppose it was a top of the range, but now it's
getting old and tired it does get quite wet. However, several years ago I
bought drysacs of varying sizes, one of which lines the sack. Inside I divided
all my gear up into individual sacs (one for hat and gloves, one for wallet and
phone, one for emergency gear and so on). It not only keeps it doubly dry in
the event of some submarine encounter (!) but your kit is kept conveniently
separate within the bag. It also keeps your sac from sagging, as all the kit
normally drops to the bottom in a jumbled mass. My old rucksack may well work
on for a long time yet - it's my fell top friend!

I can recommend this system. I won't name examples, but drysacs are now
available in varying sizes from very small to those you can put my car in!

Ad altiora!

Peter

Thank you Paul for your kind words. More blushes again tonight in Loweswater.

All I can say is that we'll have to order more scone ingredients ... and you may
have to order a waterproof EXPED BAG to fit inside your rucksac ;o)

Cheers for now,

Roger and Ann.

Hello Roger and Ann,

Thanks for the reply on the photos. I am going to put some thoughts
together and post them on my blog site. It really is a conundrum. Size,
access, quality and wearability has also come to light after yesterdays
downpour soaked the inside of my nearly new Karrimor rucksack. Something Im
not to happy about.

But enough of me. As a newcomer to OFC, I've been sitting on the sidelines
watching you and Ann get all you richly deserve. I found your website some
time before OFC and, yes , you have been an inspiration to me too.

So thank you , both of you and one day I hope we will meet. Especially if
food is involved.

Take care, both of you.

Hi Paul,

I was faced with exactly this delema recently when my Cannon G7 ceased to
respond to the on button !

I heartached about which camera to buy and looked at DLSRs, the new Lumix
slim camera (with the electronic viewfinder rather than prism viewing lens)
and at compacts.

My conclusion was to chose the new Cannon G10 (G11 was not available a few
months ago) The reason was one of convenience. I reckon the camer far
surpasses my ability to take nice pictures and is compact enough to belt
mount under my gortex jacket so that I can get at it easily.

A DSLR would be nice but the size is the problem, plus the cost and weight
of extra lenses. To take those extra special photos that several members
keep throwing in to amaze and tantalise us all, I felt would increase the
cost and complexity as you said, and decrease the ease of use considerably.

The Lumix G1 turned out not to be much smaller overall than a standard SLR
once you add the lenses. Even with a slim body and proportionately smaller
lens units I felt it was still too large to fit under my coat.

The G7 was certainly convenient, and the G10 matches it in all respects. It
will do RAW files too if you want it too but I haven't really gone down that
road yet as I take too many pictures !

All that remains is to read the instruction book and get the best out of my
choice, the Cannon G10.

Hope that helps

Cheers
Roger

My photographic contribution to the day can be found at:

The misty conditions seem to have got to my lens, despite regular cleaning, so
not many pix.

Once again my thanks to all who took part in a memorable and thoroughly

Hi Everyone,

We are totally overwhelmed by everyone's kindness. For once, I am quite lost for
words but really want to say a great big thank you to Peter, who dreamed up
'Celebrating the Hileys' and all of you who have said such kind and appreciative
words about us.

We love the OFC and feel indebted to Peter for dreaming up and implementing his
vision of the club. It has attracted such a great band of very special people,
who are such a pleasure to correspond with, meet for walks (and drink and
food!)and on many occasions, to entertain in our home.

We know we live in a very lovely part of the Lakes, and it would be very selfish
on our parts not to share our own special place with others. After all, it is
the fells, lakes and mountains that surround us here which are so very much
loved by everyone in the OFC.

We shall wear our gold badges with pride and hope to see all our friends in the
OFC again very soon, as well as others we still have the pleasure to meet in the
future.

Thank you all most sincerely

Ann and Roger

Dear Members,

I am just about to have dinner before my drive home to London after a
great weekend. Saturday was wet but I still loved it. Sunday was
better and whatever the weather Great Gable is always a celebrated
ascent on Remembrance and today's weather was just magic.

My father and I have just returned from a lovely walk on Wansfell - it
was packed at the pike! The real summit was empty and it was here that
we sat and had lunch.

Anyway, before I set off home here is the link to the article
celebrating Roger and Ann. Some of you may not have found it if all of
your OFC activity is via e-mail. Many thanks for those who contributed
choice words after my request and for those who would like to add their
own thoughts to the article please get in touch. It was difficult for
me to contact everyone direct in the short time frame I gave myself.

I look forward to photos from the weekend and will post my own in due
course.

More information to follow, but new OFC badges are now available. There
is a luxury enamel version with a proper close fixing and button badges
for general rucksack abuse! An article will outline costs and styles in
the week. Sorry, but OFC 'Gold' Badges are not available for sale
following preliminary requests.

Ad altiora!

Nov.

Hi All,

Eight members ascended Great Gable from Honister today and met two more on the
summit for the service of Remembrance at 11 am.

Jo, Joan, Ann, Roger and Gareth, Nigel, Dave and Peter met up with Richard, and
Ben who had climbed from Seathwaite with his Dad and friends.

Despite promising sightings of weak sunlight, the summit never quite cleared of
cloud and the conditions on the top were slightly cold to say the least.

A large crowd gathered to hear the oration by the Fell and Rock Club
representative and once the 600 plus crowd had dispersed, we adjourned to a
sheltered spot close to Westmorland Cairn for an early lunch.

Descending Green Gable we dropped down out of the cloud and were treated to
beautifully clear views with patchy sunlight illuminating many of the fells.

A good day out with excellent company, and an opportunity to give thanks for all
those that have given so much in service to our country.

Roger

Hi Sherran,

Glad you enjoyed the pics. It's not fellwalking but sometimes I just have to get

Thanks Helmut. I wondered what it was, it was interesting to read the article
about them.

Hi Ann,

I remember being fascinated by the 'golfballs' as a child and was quite sad to
see them go! Glad you enjoyed the pics of York. It looks like a fabulous morning
in Keswick ,,, It's thick fog here at the moment but I'm hopeful of it clearing
soon!

Looking forward to the pics from yesterday.

Just been having a look on memory may and if I have it right the track leads to
a car park to the north on Blakey Ridge before carrying on further north and
east.....looks interesting , but a fair drive for us.

Lol I think you know more than me Dave! It was only a short walk for us that
day.

A rather unexpected short walk today I received a message from one of our
grandaughters with a request to take her a walk.
With not much time to fit anything in, it was a quick run up the A6 to Levens
Bridge where we had seen some good colours a day or two before on the way home
from the Lakes.
The walk and pictures, for those wishing to view are now available on the
website located in the "Last Walk" section.

Hello Friends,
Thanks to Roger and David for their post and comment, my version follows, no
need for a fresh thread ....

I decided to visit the Great Gable Remembrance event for the first time, today.
Rather than do the Honister route with the others, I preferred to park at
Seatoller and ascend via Brown Base & Green Gable with a view to meeting up and
walking back with them. I left home at 5:10 and was parked up by 7:10. I walked
as far as Taylorgill Force and decided to take a look at the cleft which splits
the South East crag of Base Brown - see Wainwright BB p3. I climbed up through
the cleft and all I will say is that I do not recommend this route to anyone, up
or down - don't bother.
From the summit of BB (in cloud) I compassed my way to meet the Green Gable path
and joined the procession towards the Gable summits. I reached Great Gable
summit in good time and had a good walk round to keep warm, lots of folk were in
porta-bivvies. If I couldn't find the others, I was going to poke a few bivvies.
But soon enough I found the main OFC contingent.
After the two minutes silence, we took a look at the Memorial and then had lunch
over by the Westmorland Cairn.
We descended via Green Gable, Brandreth and Grey Knotts, Dave kindly gave me a
lift down to Seatoller so that I could be back home for tea in reasonable time,
even more reasonable if I hadn't left my rucksac in Dave's car.
The photos are here:

I think it's Neil, not Nigel, that should be in the roll call.
A long day, well worth it,
Richard R.
