Dear Members,

In conjunction with GuideUs we have ten copies of a fantastic hill chart
to give away over the next 10 weeks. Sadly, the OFC funds don't stretch
to yachts or cottages in Lakeland, but with the generosity of Jack
Towers (of Towerscape Ltd) he has offered up 10 of their excellent
hillcharts which are of interest to anyone in the fellwalking fraternity
or with an interest in AW.

To find out more about this week's competition (Peak Speak 8) visit the
OFC site or access the article directly via http://tinyurl.com/377erfo
<http://tinyurl.com/377erfo>

Information is also being provided via the OFC Twitter account.

It seems only fair to highlight the GuideUs brand and I hope you have
chance to peruse their website and investigate more of their exciting
products from there. http://www.guideus.co.uk
<http://www.guideus.co.uk>

Sadly, there were no prizes last week (Peak Speak 7), but all the
following correctly identified Barrow as the fell being an anagram of
'Orb War':
WELL DONE TO James Hoye, Fr.Paul Harrison, Jo Hall, Richard Ratcliffe,
David Mould, Angela Clarke, Helmut Hudler, Mike Higlette - you're
felltoptastic!

Ad altiora!

Peter

P.S. Please enter Peak Speak 8 via my usual e-mail address at

Hi All,

Angela Espin and I struck lucky with the weather yesterday when we parked at
Mungrisdale. Despite clouds over many of the fells around us we had clear and
often sunny, conditions for our walk. We walked along the Glenderamackin and
then up the interesting East Ridge of Bannerdale Crags. Not as steep as they
look from a distance but an enjoyable way up the fell. The views from the top
were not as good as they should have been as Blencathra was in cloud.

Then on to Bowscale Fell along the clear traverse path. Lunch was taken in the
shelter out of the wind and then we detoured for a look at Bowscale Tarn before
heading in warm sunshine down the long East Ridge of the fell which took us back
to the village.

An enjoyable (4 hour) walk in good company in good weather - very different from
today when it is quite foul - a day for staying indoors.

Hi John

I have just viewed your pictures from yesterdays walk. As always great photo's
from your Lake District walks. As you say what a difference in the weather
compared to yesterday. It is a foul day down here in Gloucestershire today as
well with heavy rain and strong winds.
We seem to get more wet autumns these days.

Best wishes

Mike

Some excellent photos Helmut. The fungi is the same as we saw on Sunday near
where we live, but I don’t know what it’s called. Looking down on it
reminded me of a fried egg :-)

Hi all,

After all those bright weather reports, let me add another one of last
week´s Wednesday morning. Autumn is calling in with all the misty views but
also with its sunny and bright side.
Once more I have included some HDR pictures, and this time, I hope you don´t
realize which one is an HDR - best HDR is that one you don´t see (unless you
do know the criteria how to discern), but only enjoy the beauty. I am
learning hard at the moment, to make them as realistic as possible, and
maintain the special effects included with this exciting technology.

See the results on the most recent page of

Evening all

Thursday was a wet day so Jill, Nigel and I arranged to meet up at 3pm at Aira
Force, we were hoping the forecast would be correct and we might expect a dry
spell. We timed it spot on, the rain stopped just as I parked up! The falls were
spectacular and I must say it was real pleasure to meet and walk with Jill and
Nigel for the first time, a lovely short afternoon walk.

I've put a few of my photos up but obviously expect Jill's to be of a completely
different standard to mine!

I've also added a few photos at the end of the album of my walk the next day up
Place Fell. It was shrouded in cloud when I arrived in Patterdale...

Have a good weekend everyone.

Thanks Sherran, it was quite chilly first thing in the valley but warmed up as

Dear Maggie,

Good to see Jill in action with the camera - I was in Kent this week and
probably missed out on a cup of tea (at least) due to her northern jaunt!

Anyway, good to see all the water in the falls.
Just as a further point of information, it is right that Scalehow Force has been
cause as a result of a fault but at that point the Skiddaw rocks are about 1200m
below the surface (and is their southern limit). You are right that a fault
(Birkhouse Moor Fault) runs through there causing the fall. The rock to the
north is a lava of the Birker Fell formation, whilst to the south the volcanic
material is mixed with sandstone etc (like a cake mixture) to form a breccia.
Thought you might like to know (or not!) as I like to investigate these type of
things!

Keep up the work with the photos, I might not always comment but I do always
look as I do with everyone else.

Ad altiora!

Peter

P.S. Don't forget the competition to win a Lakeland Hill Chart on the OFC site
- I am sure you would get the answer!

My geological knowledge is sketchy but I read about Scalehow Force somewhere and
thought it quite interesting...even more interesting now thanks to your detailed
explanation! Cheers.

I'll take a look at that competition.

Hello all

I've just posted some photos from the walk John P. and I did last weekend - Pike
O'Blisco and Crinkle Crags. As some of you will have already seen from John's
photos, it was a fabulous day - with almost perfect visibility. My version of
the day can be found at

http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/mellfell103

The day after, I did Birkhouse Moor on not such a good day, but I'm not
complaining ... it didn't rain. An added bonus was a cup of tea afterwards in
Pooley Bridge with Angie Espin and family - they had just done Beda Fell.

My freebie Picasa account is virtually full :-((. Has anyone tried to open a
new (second) freebie account or am I going to have to fork out some dosh? I
know I managed several free accounts on Webshots, but I'm not sure if Picasa
will allow this. If anyone has any experience of this, do let me know!

Bye just now.

Jo

Hi Jill,

Enjoyed loking at your recent photos during a tea break in the middle of a busy
afternoon.

No mountains for sure, but plenty of things on the ground and in the air to see.
Some really stunning photos. I also really enjoyed seeing Alice and Jenny, as
well as the lovely Feeney. belton House looked a good day out too.

We've seen those black swans in their native habitat in Australia, at a place,
appropriately namde Swansea, but pronounced as Swan - Sea.

Thanks for sharing your weekend, and thanks to Sherran too for nice comments on
Roger's and Bethan's challenging trip up onto various undefined summits on
Sunday morning !

With only just over a couple of hours available to myself dor walking today it
just had to be the old favourite of Arnside Knott.
A very pleasant if short and hurried walk but with some good views filled my

I even had time for a snack I'm sure AW would have approved of.

Hi Everyone,

We got back Saturday evening from a really enjoyable couple of weeks in the
Lakes I have to say Nigel and I did more walking on this visit than we had done
in many previous years including for us some long walks especially on Thursday
which included Striding Edge and 5 new summits for us, my GPS said almost 13
miles! Not far for some of you here but before I went on holiday I never
imagined I'd be able to do that. I'd love to know why I always feel so much
better while I'm in the Lakes! Add to that though what made our holiday was
meeting up with many OFC friends so thanks to all those we met up with, you know
who you all are and pictures will be revealed in time :o)

I have no idea how long its going to take me to sort through the many pictures
I've taken Yesterday for some reason I felt shattered can't imagine why lol so
haven't even loaded them all onto the computer yet and I've a house I really
should get "Mum clean" before I do much more too :o(

Thanks to those who have been visiting the website while I've been away I forgot
to mention on the board before we left a visit I made to Dover where I descended
the Cliffs to visit the wreck of the SS Falcon but at least a couple of you have
found it :o) For those who haven't then its at http://www.jillbatchelor.com/

I will do my best to catch up with everyone's recent pictures in the coming days

Hi all

Yesterday we drove up Guisborough to meet friends John and Karen.
A walk had been planned, whatever the elements would throw at us!
We drove to Sandsend and walked the Cleveland Way path to Runswick Bay and back,
around 8 miles in heavy rain and high winds but we still enjoyed ourselves -
apart from my waterproof trousers leaking!

Pix are at:-

Any recommendations for waterproofs? I've had the current ones for many years
and have no complaints about them but I'm sure others will have purchased new
ones recently.

All the best

Dear Members,

The winner of PEAK SPEAK 8 (randomly chosen as 10th in those who
entered) is Maggie Allan - she will receive the first of 10 GuideUs
hill charts on offer - WELL DONE TO HER AND ALL THOSE WHO CORRECTLY
ENTERED!

PEAK SPEAK 8: The answer was an anagram of 'Colleen Falls' hence the
peak, Lonscale Fell. Thanks and well done to all entrants.

PEAK SPEAK 9: "I kept stores!", reiterated the outgoing chair of Tesco*.
What's the peak named here?

Please do enter as there are a further 9 hillcharts on offer and all
winners will be selected using a random number generator based on the
order of entry. Each question is a new competition so if you entered
this week, please enter again. I think this week's is slightly easier.

Walk Date: 8th September 2010
Walk Area: Lake District

A walk today from the Pelter Bridge car park at Rydal which took us up onto
Loughrigg Terrace above Rydal Water before descending to the weir at the foot of
Grasmere.
There followed a walk along the shore of Grasmere and a visit to Faeryland
before a return past Dove Cottage and along the "coffin track" to Rydal. A short
walk around Rydal Park was followed by a visit to the café there before the
short walk back to the car.
An absolutely glorious day weather-wise.
A full route description, route map, and info regarding certain places along the
way, as well as many, many pictures are now available to view on the website.
Regards,
Dave

Dear Members,

Please can I ask people not to post answers to 'Peak Speak' on the Yahoo!
message board, but to e-mail them to me via the submission form on the OFC site
or to my usual OFC address fellrunning@... (not
burge01@...) I know someone has just apologised (who shall remain
nameless and wasn't the first - hehe) but it spoils it a little for others who
like to get involved.

In any case, this shouldn't stop people entering again this week as the
competition prize is selected randomly from all the entries. So go on, get your
entries in!

Thanks a lot for your co-operation and ongoing support.

Ad altiora!

Peter

P.S. Read the small print Sue!! LOL

Any recommendations for waterproofs?......I don't think you can beat
Paclites for summer & Paramo for winter Dave. But no doubt others will
have different ideas.

Hi all

Yesterday we drove up Guisborough to meet friends John and Karen.
A walk had been planned, whatever the elements would throw at us!
We drove to Sandsend and walked the Cleveland Way path to Runswick Bay
and back, around 8 miles in heavy rain and high winds but we still
enjoyed ourselves - apart from my waterproof trousers leaking!

Any recommendations for waterproofs? I've had the current ones for many
years and have no complaints about them but I'm sure others will have
purchased new ones recently.

All the best

Hello Simon,
I am sorry that i will be unable to attend on Saturday.I have a trapped nerve in
my lower back that makes walking difficult.Experienced my first
Chiropractor treatment this morning with more to follow.
It has been a trying last four months as my right hand has not fully recovered
from a suspected Adder bite early june, but am now able to hold my poles, and was
really looking forward to be on the hills again.
Forecast is good,so i send my best wishes to everyone for a very enjoyable and
rewarding day.
Cheers,
Keith

Hello Everyone,

About time that I introduced myself but before I do details of my most
recent walk in Nidderdale have been posted on line and can be found
at...

http://bit.ly/cYzzAE

I've been a member of the list since November last year when coming
across a link on Roger & Ann's website. A local friend had sent me a
link to their coverage of the Cumbrian Flooding given that we (RAYNET)
were on standby to provide back up radio communications in the area if
needed. Been following the list ever since, just not posted until now.

Me - I'm 42 and live in Harrogate with wife & 3 kids 12 and under.
Grew up in Southampton and got into walking properly at approx 11
which included a lot of New Forest walking plus trips to The Brecon
Beacons and Exmoor being the nearest 2 National Parks at the time. I
spent my university years (+ a few more) in Birmingham from where I
got regular trips into the Peak District, Shropshire Hills, Mid &
North Wales. Now living in West Harrogate I have The Yorkshire Dales
on my doorstep with The Moors, Lakes & Pennines all within an easy
strike - I consider myself lucky.

Most of my walking these days is with Scouts (and sometimes cubs). My
Son is in Scouts and my two daughters in Cubs. I'm the Group Scout
Leader of the same group, one of the several active groups we're lucky
to have in the area. I hold a Scouting Terrain 1 Hillwalking permit,
which follows the same syllabus and assessment of the MLTB Walking
Group Leader Award; this permits me to take groups of children on the
hill up to 800m or up to 3hours away from help (defined as walking to
road/farm/phone box...). I got into walking because enthusiastic
adults around me when I was a child took time to show me what it was
about, I can hopefully do the same for the next generation.

Maybe of interest to some - for our summer holiday we spent a week in
a static caravan in Bassenthwaite Village. Got three good walks in,
details are...

Coledale Round http://bit.ly/aucJj6

Skiddaw Round http://bit.ly/cz8HdW

Buttermere Lake Circuit http://bit.ly/c0SH5W

Happy walking everyone and keep up the good work keeping this online
community active

Cheers, Mike
